Pros
  • Close to beach, great shopping.
Cons
  • The theft, and drug's are out of control.

"A good home is what you make it"

George Town is located in a beautiful area about 40 minutes drive from Launceston. Prices for houses and land here is still extremely cheap compared to what you would have to pay anywhere else in Australia. The town has everything you would need to live very comfortably and happily - of course you have woolies, iga, chemists, mechanics, restaurants etc. etc., there's a hospital, schools, library, indoor sports centre, a Peppers Resort, great seafood, and a great public swimming pool. Annual festivals such as the arts and music festival brings a little bit of excitement in the area. Wineries and beaches are all very close by to enjoy. With brand new George Town Council offices being built, and economic development plans in the pipeline, this town is like a dark horse that could very well bolt ahead in the not too distant future.

"At Tamar's River mouth"

George Town was first settled in 1804 and currently has a population of roughly 7000 people. There are some great little pockets around George Town for anyone looking to buy in a smaller town - from affordability to amazing locations with views of the river and close to the facilities that George town has to offer. About 5 minutes driving in a car and you will be at the beach and 30 minutes south will place you in Launceston.

"Not for live in."

I lived there for 2 years (2010 – 12). It has 2 areas, the rough one – which is at the right hand side of the main road,, and the not so rough one. Unfortunately I lived in the rough area.. almost every day I heard big fights from next door and on few occasions the police came. Overall it has very high unemployment rate, retirees and teen mums… very slow-pace of life. Try to walk there during the day, and you can tell what I mean. If you are a professional / dynamic young family.. this is definitely not your place to be! Unless you are a single working nearby and don’t care about anything else in life but working. But if are looking for a quite holiday area, you may want to stay there for a day or two (especially for fishing). Note: this is not a good investment area too, I have seen houses not sold/rented in months!

"Inexpensive options to enter the market as well as lovely luxurious homes too."

George Town is a beautiful seaside town on the mouth of the Tamar River. Many years ago George Town was thought only of an idustrial town as nearby Bell Bay is home to BHP Billton's manganese plant and RioTinto's aluminium smelter, thus bringing many workers to the local area when it first began to grow. However, George Town has come a long way since those days, now home to many young families, retired couples and many friendly people from all walks of life. The South George Town and Pipe Clay Bay area is a growing, modern area with lovely views of the Tamar and out to Low Head. 5 minutes from stunning beaches at Low Head and an easy 35 minute drive on our new 80 million dollar highway sees you arrive at Launceston where shopping and nightlife is good, or it's also an easy commute to a job if you're not lucky enough to find one locally in the town. George Town has had it's day of outsiders knocking it for whatever reason; we welcome new and enthusiastic people who we are sure will soon fall in love with this beautiful, historic place that we are so lucky to be able to call home!

TamaresqueInTassie
TamaresqueInTassie Are there shops and other services in the areas you mention? They don't come up on Google maps or when I Google those areas. They do look excellent, but I'd prefer somewhere I don't have to use the car to get to the shops all the time.

"Friendly, convenient and great lifestyle"

masonsmum
masonsmum I have lived and worked in George Town for nearly thirty years. There is an amazing community spirit and the people are very friendly and welcoming. I have been involved with the localarts community since moving here and the cultural aspect of the town is quite lively and represented in all aspects of music, painting and drawing, quilting, history, dance etc. A highlight for me is the annual forlk festival that in 2011 will celebrate its 20th year. Artists such as Eric Bogle, Danny Spooner, Nick Charles, among many have appeared at the festival. How lucky are we to live in one of the most beautiful places in Tasmania where the scenery is stunning, the lifestyle one to be envied and only 45 minutes away from a major city? If you have heard unkind things about our town, put them with a grain of mustard and realise that every place has an element that is less than savoury and the best thing to do is to get on and live your life to the fullest and George Town is one of the best places in Tasmania to do that.

"Wonderful place to live"

I have been associated with George Town and low Head for thirty years. I still own a cottage at low Head. My years spent in George Town are some of the happiest in memory. Great friends, wonderful schools, opportunities to indulge in my favourite passtimes such as art, music, and socilal events. I am the Co -Ordinator of the Tamar Valley Folk Festival which is the only Folk Festival in the North of Tasmania and has been hosted in George Town for 20 years.
We receive rave reviews from visitors about the town and the people after every festival.
As a Real Estate Agent for many years in George Town, I had the opportunity to sell hundreds of homes in all areas. The town offers luxury homes on the water to modest cottages at affordable prices.
It is disappointing to read negative reviews of the town.
My best suggestion to anyone thinking of moving to George Town is come and see for yourself.
I cant wait to retire back in the area. Love the place and the people.

LyndaB Its good to read positive comments about George Town, I am considering retiring in a few years, or at least semi retiring (am Registered Nurse) and want to get back to a quiet country area. Have lived in Tasmania before, years ago, and have now started to look at quiet areas, George Town is one that I am considering. Thank you. :)

TamaresqueInTassie
TamaresqueInTassie Me, too. I've been looking for a place that is flat so I can walk to shops, etc; which has a range of services such as P.O., chemist, GP, shops, hospital and George Town fits the bill. The only drawback for me is the distance to Launceston (which I know is a very Tasmanian thing to say seeing it's only 40 minutes on one of the best highways in the state).

TamaresqueInTassie The best thing? Land prices start under $50,000 and houses start at just over $100,000.

KateJ1 I am considering seriously moving to George Town as i need a cooler climate for health issues. I am alittle bit worried about the lack of policing burglaries and vandalism comments i have read. The properties are very reasonable to rent. I am a single person on disability and value what little belongings i own and wonder just how bad the criminal element is. I currently live in Qld.

brianr2 Hi Kate, I too am considering moving to the area but have reservations about the drug and crime elements. I know that these problems exist in all parts of Australia but how prevelant in this area is my concern. I think the best thing to do is to fly down and get a first hand impression. Brian

TamaresqueInTassie
TamaresqueInTassie It depends on what part of town you buy in. Generally the south is more salubrious than north or east of the town centre. Just north of George Town is Low Head which is a wonderful place but pricey (by Tassie standards) however, you can find uninterrupted ocean views at Bell Buoy Beach (which is advertised under Low Head) from $65,000 for land of around 1000 square metres.

Mick W
Mick W Hello I have lived in George Town my entire life to the negative reviews they were some what old, in the last few years many houses including housing commision have been sold off which has been driving the riff raff out of town! I believe the local council have had a part to play here as there was word through the grape vine that the idea was to sell housing commision off to prospective buyers and clean up the area which is successfully working, attracting more retirees or people buying holiday homes. There is a holiday home an old house right across me that no one has entered, I have had no problems my entire life here, of course if you have bad neighbours, my advice however is before you purchase or a rent a place do some homework, prior to me buying my home I studied my neighbours habits, I drove past more then enough times to see what the street was like, in the end it's where you pick is how you will be effected, if you buy next to someone that is loud usually then I am sorry to say but you are kind of asking for it, a little investigation goes a long way. Having said all that I will now tell you briefly about me I am a mature 33 year old professional , having been in the military I am very neat and quiet should you require a room I have a double on offer for 130.00 a week whether you would like to stay just to get the feel of the area you could get in touch with me via my ad here https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-view-details.html?adId=1124632840 . This town often has an unforeseen investment opportunity being a 5 to 10 min drive to the beach. I actually think it's silly to miss out on such a great opportunity personally, buy 100 000 dollar house flip the house for profit, buy a house rent it out, in a few years the investment is paid off plus a return, people are mad not to in my opinion. I said it when I was a child to my parents when houses were worth 15 000 no joke, now they are 150 000, my uncle paid 30k for his house and a shack out at Beachford for 40k, you can only imagine what both are worth right now! sorry but I have to laugh. I really do not understand because if I had 500 000 I would buy 5 houses in this town and double my money.
