"Glen Innes a positive experience for us"

My wife and I bought a property in Glen Innes three years ago now. Our experience with the town has been generally positive. The neighbours are friendly and look out for us and our property if we are away. The locals are welcoming and friendly. The climate is wonderful, and the life style very laid-back and enjoyable. Easy access to national parks, fishing spots and gem fossiking.

It is a small town of just over 6000 people, but has adequate shopping and dining out options for us. Property prices are very affordable, and good rentals seem to be in demand.

We are at retirement age and so are not looking for work in the area, I think it would be a bit short sighted to move in and expect to find "your kind" of work here in the short term. However, I believe hospitality and service industry jobs are on the increase.

School kids seem well catered for. Not too many options for youth around town, so there is an element of anti-social behaviour apparent at times.

I recommend the town. However, don't expect all the retail, employment and medical facilities found in larger centres.

Great for

  • Reasonable property prices
  • Beautiful Location
  • Fantastic historical buildings
  • Great Climate
  • Celtric Country
  • Historic Standing Stones

"Great place but limited to services"

Great place but extremely limited medical services. Not ideal for retirees or families with complex medical needs. The medical practices are not taking any more patients and the doctors are quite overwhelmed by the most number of patients. There is no 24/7 maternity care due to shortage of midwives. The hospital do have an oncall doctor very occasionally but I personally know people travelling all the way to guyra to see a doctor. The place is great for investors but for those who wants to buy a house the choice is very limited as the prices are quite high and quite a few are rundown houses. I think the pre school, private and public schools aren't too bad. Easiest way to get a job would be at the nursing homes if you are a nurse. Great place to stay temporarily but definitely not a place to settle down at least for now

Hi
Thank you for your comments.
Just to let everyone know that 5 new doctors are coming to town.
A new hospital is also currently being built and is due to open 2026.
Also current listings on domain.com show brand new to newly renovated to older style houses for sale to suit everyone's taste ranging from 200K to millions depending on your budget.
With plenty of remote work from home options, anyone can move here.
Two things to note, if you do not like freezing weather and like a lot of shopping and dining out options you won't settle here.
My wife and I highly recommend Glen Innes because it suits our quiet country Christian conservative lifestyle.
Anyway, we recommend everyone come and have a look but not too many people as we want Glen Innes to stay quiet.

yolom

Not sure where you got that information about 5 new doctors coming to town. As far as I know the hospital has been advertising for a full time locum GP but still couldn't get any. I know a lot of other people who have GPs in Armidale and others on a waiting list for two years or more. Some of the old houses are overpriced for what they are. Don't get me wrong. Glen Innes is a great place but like a said if you have a complex medical history and needs medical and social services it is certainly not the place to be right now.

Interesting comments, would be nice if the Airport Training Centre went ahead, maybe the new Airline Bonza will show some interest

Hi Yolam
Thank you for commenting.
Very useful information.
A gp on East ave told us they have hired two new gps and another 3 in town are coming
He is lobbying the government for this which is positive
Re housing.
Yes some housing is over 100 years old. Some are well maintained others not so
When compared to other places it is very affordable
My wife and I work remote full time for national company so we have a very good lifestyle
You do need work if you are not retired and there is not a great deal.of that.
Thanks again
Look forward to any more discussions

"love ❤ Glen Innes"

We moved here in 2022
We work remotely and both have professional jobs
We bought a house for 255k. Where can you buy a liveable house for this price in a well serviced town in the eastern states?
We are Christian.
Glen is a very Christian town.
We love it and intend to stay a long time

"Couldn't get away quick enough"

We moved here in 2003 from the Gold Coast looking for a relaxing, rural lifestyle. What a mistake. Fortunately by March 2005 (the 3rd to be exact) we were able to sell up and leave. Had a falling out with our neighbours basically over their intrusiveness. One day the woman next door came into my house via my backdoor unannounced, very strange for a city person to deal with but perhaps the way they are away from the civilized world. Afterwards I got to see how crazy the couple really were. As the guy owned guns I really was scared at times for myself and my family. We were told off by the waitress at a local Chinese restaurant for using too many plates (she keep taking them away when we had finished eating off them). Another time I was told off by a waitress in a cafe for eating a lolly my wife had handed me. Whilst we met some nice people it was the not so nice ones that stick in my mind. My kids hated the local school and have nothing but bad memories of the place. And then there's the climate. Do you really want to live somewhere that regularly goes below -10C in winter? There's nothing here for teenagers most of whom would either move away or stay and take drugs.

Rentals in Glen Innes

"Glen Innes.....Good place to Invest and Live"

I purchased an investment property in Glen Innes 5 years ago. Although the property has not rapidly grown in value (probably increased by 25%) rental return is high based on the low purchase price.

My parents moved to the town approximately 7 years ago and enjoy the laid back lifestyle. They enjoy being involved in the community and Dad particularly enjoys playing Golf while Mum is involved in several community groups.

I live in Brisbane now though would love to raise my family in a smaller town like Glen Innes.

"New England Area - Celtric Country"

What a great place to live - we have the advantage of experiencing all of the four seasons, great summers, leafy autums, cool winters, lovely springtime. Our area has to offer, low crime rate, access to hospitals and specialists, good schools, easy drive to the coastal areas, seasonal festivals - just a lovely place to live. Only 4 hours to Brisbane, a short drive to Armidale and the beautiful Inverell districts.
Our rural areas offer a variety of enterprises including top farming areas, fine wool production, cattle farming, ideal horse locations, wild bush blocks with waterfalls, gullies, riveans, a massive amount of wildlife and fauna with views to die for, usual annual rainfall 32" - what more could your relocation need???
Come and visit this friendly area and have a taste of country hospitality and quality country living.

"If you are new to Glen Innes dont ever expect to become a local"

Saddly my first review is not a positive one. For 12 months before we moved here my partner and I visited regulary, We found the town beautiful and the people always friendly, with a happy smile and a wave as you pass. We decided this is the place for us to spend our last working years and retirement. So my partner gained employment here and we moved, all excited about our new life. Well since we have become residence( see I dont use the word local because we have been told on many occasions we would never be locals) We discovered the only way he gained employment because the owner of the business that did employ him was not a local himself. I have applied for position after position that I have been more than qualified for only to find the locals get first preference. It really is such a sad state when it is us new comers who keep this town thriving, we bring with us new skills and all we want in return is a little acceptance. The town of Glen Innes itself is beautiful, the climate is magnificant and tourists are treated so well, but god forbid you try to become a local.
Is there a doctor in the house, Well not in Glen Innes, Dont get me wrong there is 5 practising doctors in this town. But none are taking new patients. And the hospital actually flies a doctor from Sydney for the weekend. I was told by A & E dept at the hospital to either drive to Guyra or Inverell to see a doctor. Maybe it really time for the NSW health dept to do something about the lack of Medical facilities in rural areas,

Great for

  • Beautiful Location

Not great for

  • Locals attitudes to new comers
  • Local Doctors do not take new patients

That is sad, usually country folk are nothing like you have described but at least you are honest.

dunmovin

Adam I absolutely agree with you, We have lived in the country most of our life. As I said when we holidayed here it was fantastic. We would stay at the Craigieburn Tourist park, They were great , the managers couldnt do enough for you.We have travelled most of Australia and Craigieburn is one of the best tourist parks ever. The friendliness shown to us on holidays was our expectation that it would be the same when we moved here. Saddly we were wrong, I have spoken to other new comers to the town and all have said they have been treated the same. We have been here a year now . The only way for me to gain employment was to travel to another town daily, a town with a completely different attitude thank goodness. I dont want to scare people off Glen Innes I still think it is beautiful and a safe place to live. I just want to make new comers aware of the locals attitude.

liliandukovski

This has been very revealing and I think its fantastic that we can get this sort of information electronically with just a little bit of research. That sort of attitude may ruin the town (deservedly so?) and indeed create an attitude towards it. We attended the Rosehill Expose for the regional areas today and the ladies could not have been more affable so interesting to get this sort of perspective, but it could be so negatively impactful to someone who thought it was a good idea to move there. Locals and council need to look at themselves closer, but more importantly, why are you bothering with displaying at Rosehill? Its so good that the real Glen Innes has been revealed.

lmiller

I guess everyone has a varied experience in towns. It is sad you have had a bad experience.

Tess

This is really disappointing we have friends who were seriously looking at moving to Glen Innes to retire. My friend has a long term medical problem so if the doctors wont take new patients this is oviously going to cause major issues. Dunmoving can i ask what the town is you found where they are accepting of new folk and are there any doctors there ? Dog owners are there any tick issues in the area please ?

dunmovin

Hi Tess, well I guess Guyra would be a good place for your friends as they at least have doctors taking new patients, and for more serious medical conditions they would not be far from Armidale. Sadly to say being into our 2nd year in Glen Innes my opinion of the place hasnt changed much, Still no local doctors taking new patients, and now a local private enterprise " New England Nuclear Energy" is trying to build a nuclear power station here, they are trying to get the 1986 NSW Uranium mining and Nuclear act changed. They appearently only need just over another 2,500 signitures. The write up in the local paper made out that if you opposed their proposal you were not a thinking person, Well I am a thinking person and I certainly dont want a Nuclear anything in my back yard. Can you imagine the health risks the drop in the property market and god help us if it all went wrong. This all seems to be happening in silence. But it did make the local Glen Innes paper a few months back.

Tess

Oh my goodness ! Thank you dunmovin ! well that rights Glen Innes well and truly off the list if there is "any" chance of a Nuclear Power station going in ! Just look at Fukashima ! Oh well back to the drawing board so to speak shame Glen Innes has many things going for it but oviously a lot of BAD things as well

VinceP

Dunmovin you got it wrong, all doctors in GI are taking new patients...01/02/16Add a comment...

countrylivin

The nuclear power station never went ahead. It was smaller than the size of a fridge. There was not enough of support. GI is now becoming one of the green energy hubs in Australia http://www.adammarshall.com.au/another-renewable-energy-project-approved-for-region/
VinceP, The Doctors are accepting new patients. There is also a doctor at the local hospital at weekends now.
I moved here 10 years ago from the city. I found the locals embraced new arrivals and I was quickly accepted into the community. I have not found any barriers not being a 'local'. Jobs are hard to get in country towns anyway. But the quickest way of getting noticed and feeling a part of the community is to volunteer for one of the may of the worthwhile groups in town. Even serve on the committee of one of these groups.

Andama Dujon
Andama Dujon

very hard to get a job here , I would suggest buying commercial residential as that way you can avoid most of the crime issues and target tourists only you will do well if you do not set up a business where you need local support. This is a great town however like many small towns the locals dislike change and can be very judgemental

Yep we found exactly the same thing when we moved from sydney to orange NSW. Locals get first pick. Its who you know in a town like that, not what you can do.

A friend of my wife's who she introduced me to because he has the same name as me is a volunteer DJ on the community FM radio station in Glen Innes. He is someone who is a bit different and very timid. Boy are the people of that town unaccepting and intolerant to people who fall into that category. A group of residents even formed a lobby group to get him taken off the air, saying it was embarrassing for them to have someone like that on the radio. I say good on the station for giving him a go. This backward little country hooterville is not the place for intellectually disabled persons or those who are a bit different. They are not tolerated. Just saying.

Glen Innes is a beautiful place to live. We love it. Moved from the coast and do not regret our decision. Seasons are distinct and beautiful. Cooler to sleep at night in summer.
As far as being a localdont worry about looking to be accepted. There are enough new town members moving to the area to make friends and social connections. Locals are locals and its the same in every town. Dont waste your time on them if they are rude. We found that the local tradesmen are mostly unreliable, so dont bother chasing them. Look for new tradesmen building their business, and you will find mostly what you need.
Looking for a change of lifestyle then Glen is a good place. Beautiful parks and central to many places.
I guess if you are addicted to the medical system you may worry about doctors etc, but they are spending a huge amount on the hospital here so unless its a sidetrack bandage, they must be expecting more services.

"Friendliest Town in Australia"

Glen Innes is situated on the junction of two highways (Gwydir and New England). In recent years it has seen an exciting increase in the numbers of people moving here from all parts of Australia but especially from Queenslanders who have moved here to escape the humidity of the northern state. Glen Innes has an air-conditioned climate. Situated on the Northern Tablelands of NSW and is just 4 hours from Brisbane and 3 hours to the NSW coast. The people are friendly - in fact travellers who pass through tell us that we are the friendliest in Australia. We are sports-minded here in all age groups and love our tennis, golf, fishing, bowls, swimming, all football codes, and horse-sports. By the way do you fancy a bit of gem fossicking. Make the move to Glen soon - you'll wonder why you didnt come here sooner!

"Glen Innes - Pleasant town, lots to see, great for fossicking."

Glen Innes is in the New England area about two hours west of Grafton. Glen Innes is often called the Celtic capital of Australia and has the Australian Celtic festival held there each year. Visit the Standing Stones and Crofter’s Cottage. There are many heritage building to see and most sports are played in the area. Whilst in Glen Innes go fossicking for gem stones, visit the Land of the Beardies History House and the nearby Emmaville Mining Museum. There are National parks in the area offering some stunning views and great walking tracks. There is plenty of accommodation from caravan parks to hotels and motels as well as B & B’s and guest houses.
