Reviews of Goulburn, NSW

"Goulburn - a great place to live or visit"

- First off, there are NO MORE water shortages. A pipe line was built several years ago to draw water from Wingecarribee Reserviour (I think thats the name).
- Homes are still affordable...for now, they have risen about 7-8% in 2017
- Aldi, Coles, Woolworths, Kmart, Target, Harvey Norman, Bunnings etc
- Plenty of cafes, restaurants, bars, pubs and clubs, a Cinema (Lilac Cinema), Aquatic Centre and plenty of parks including Belmore Park, Victoria Park and Wollondilly River walking track.
- Alot of housing construction happening with several new housing estates including Ravensworth, Belmore Estate, Mistful Park, Merino Country Estate, The Tillage and the bigger acreages near Run-O-Waters not far from the Big Merino (a gigantic ram)
- The CBD is transforming with plenty of restoration and beautification work being carried out by the Council. Its looking great.
- Great looking historical buildings throught the City, museums, golf courses, footy fields, other sporting centres, and heaps of local events held throughout the year (checkout the GoulburnAustralia facebook and other pages relating to Goulburn)
- Crime rate is very low
- Most if not all of Goulburn is NBN active
- Plenty of schools throughout the Council
- Its very peaceful with great neighbours where I live. Theres plenty of parking. Although the CBD and the Hume Street entrance/exit can be hectic especially on weekends.
- Theres an airport and train station (plus bus coach services).
- To Parramatta by car is about 1.5hrs, Canberra 1hr, Batemans Bay on South Coast is about 1hr 50min.
- The Council seem to be very busy promoting Goulburn to the government and working to attract business, and have been carrying out works throughout the City.
- Weather wise, it gets cold in winter (down to minus) and hot in summer (comparable to Sydney but less humidity), and it can get windy.

I have lived in Goulburn for about 1.5 years and I love it. Its beautiful, peaceful and I have great neighbours. Its very family friendly with plenty of open spaces, parks and the Wollondilly River walking track which is awesome. I love coffee and Goulburn has many cafes and restaurants. I have seen Goulburn growing with many homes being built, and the CBD is looking better and better. The Council seem to be forward thinking and are planning for a great future for Goulburn. The drive to Sydney is easy and Canberra is a stones throw away.

I recommend Goulburn to anyone for a visit or to live.

  • Ample doctors / medical facilities
  • Architecture
  • Easy parking
  • Schools, Parks, walking tracks
  • Cafes, restaraunts, pubs, clubs
  • Affordable homes, leafy suburbs, NBN active

  • Very slow train service

Looking for a home in Goulburn?

"You'll never be a local"

I may not be "qualified" to comment on living in Goulburn as I moved away from there a few years ago after having had enough of the "small town mentality". Locals are nice enough to you when you are spending cash in their stores, but that's about it. We tried to become part of the community through volunteer work and having the kids in the local schools, the local kids are fine but when the parents started ostracising my children that was it. Best part of Goulburn is it's architecture & seeing it in the rear vision mirror when we finally managed to sell our home. By the way, you'll notice that a couple of the reviews on this page that give Gouburn it's high rating are estate agents - conflict of interest??

Great for

  • Architecture
  • Easy parking
  • Ample doctors / medical facilities

Not great for

  • The locals

Hello I have been looking at different areas as in friendly place to live in nsw or victoria I was looking at Goulburn until I read your review, think I will give it a miss now but just thought I would ask if you know of any nice areas, with a tafe campus near by thanks sorry for the long post as this is my first time

I think you will find that many small towns have this problem / attitude towards "outsiders", so maybe looking for areas with a larger / growing population will help to alleviate the issue. I can only comment on places I've lived & what happened to us in Goulburn left scars, so just make sure you do your research as it is not a pleasant experience. Good luck with your search

You missed out. Making a decision based on one opinion is not recommended. Do your research, read the Council website, check out the online groups and forums including facebook, look at growth stats etc, go for a drive and look around (if you can). Just DONT rely on one person's opinion (no disrespect to that person at all).

Not my experience at all as a Goulburn newbie, but best of luck to you and your new adventures :)

We went looking at a house in Oberon and thought country people were friendly ,not how I felt on the day. Maybe just a bad day for the Bakery there.

I grew up in Goulburn and it isn't any where near 'close' to beaches.

Rentals in Goulburn

"Goulburn - Great rest stop"

Goulburn lies on the Princes Highway and is between Sydney and Canberra and is a rural area with many small towns in close proximity. Being only one hour from the coast adds an added dimension to the area. There are many wineries in the area and a visit to the Goulburn Brewery which is one of Australia’s oldest is a must. Other attractions include art galleries, antique and craft shops and of course The Big Merino. Goulburn has some good sporting facilities such as a large aquatic centre, golf course, and skate park. For motor sport enthusiasts Wakefield Park offer great motor sport action. There are walking tracks around the area with abundant bird and animal life. For the visitor wishing to stay overnight or for extended times there is accommodation to suite all budgets and places to eat that will satisfy all tastes.

Are there many people that commute to Canberra ? What percentage would work in Canberra as we are thinking of moving to do just test because of housing affordability ?

Is Goulburn safe and suitable for single older woman? I just want to move closer to my daughter and grandkids who live in Canberra, but not on their doorstep. I love nature, the arts etc.
