"Couldn't be happier!"

An amazing place to live. Gowanbrae is tucked away between essendon fields and airport west westfield. As soon as you exit the estate, you have immediate access to the Calder freeway, the Tullamarine freeway, Hume freeway. It takes approx 18min to get to the "cheese stick" on the freeway/city fringe, an hour to Geelong, just over 10mins to keilor and under 20mins to greensborough. feel so lucky to have found this secret little place and there are some fantastic views of the city. Close to Strathmore primary school and love the Gowanbrae kinder. Highly recommend!

"Close to the city but with peace & quiet"

Having lived in Gowanbrae for a year, I love being near the parklands and trails in amongst quiet, leafy, green streets but still close to the city. Keilor Rd shops, Essendon DFO and Westfield are all close by, with Highpoint nearby too. Lots of nice eateries to suit all budgets. Woodstock is my personal favourite for true Italian pizza's and the Patisserie on Keilor Rd is great for super tasty coffee and cakes.

In terms of public transport, I get a bit frustrated having to catch a bus and then a tram or train to work in the city. There are bus stops in Gowanbrae however I would love to be able to jump on a tram. But what I love about Gowanbrae is the neighbourhood is so quiet and peaceful, yet as soon as you leave you're amongst the hustle and bustle.

Easy access to the Moonee Ponds creek Trail is also great. Some days I'll walk along the parklands down to Merri Creek and back, or other days I'll bike ride to the city which takes me just under an hour. Watching the sunset up from our house, overlooking the city is a dream.

"A hidden gem 12km from the city."

Gowanbrae is a beautiful, quiet suburb that is filled with grown tress, parklands and bike trails that take you through Moonee Ponds creek and to the city. We have been here for 2 years now, and the neighbours are incredibly friendly, and always say hello when they are out on their walks. The neighbourhood is quiet, peaceful and is tucked away behind Essendon Fields. It's 5minutes from the sought after suburb of Essendon and Moonee Ponds, down the road from Lamana and 3 minutes to freeways taking you to the CBD in 12km. The neighbourhood is known for having some of the most sensational views of the City and surrounding parklands, and properties range from townhouses to large family homes. The suburb is complete with a highly sought after long day care centre, fish and chippery, convenience store and beauty salon, and to top it off one of Australia's internationally recognised model's and tv personalities resides here.

"Gowanbrae is teaming with screaming children"

There are only a few things wrong with Gowanbrae. 1. The street parking is terrible (narrow streets). 2. There is no decent public transport (i.e. tram or train) and 3. It is absolutely teaming with screaming children.

The blocks are small so we are all living on top of each other (probably not unlike many other suburbs). So the back yards are extremely small and located within metres of neighbour's lounge rooms. When they are sick of hearing their own kids, today's parents will put them out in the 'back yard' where they go bananas yelling and screaming. Good for the parents. Bad for the neighbours who must endure the noise within metres of where they are trying to relax in their own homes.

Parents of a previous generation would never have allowed their children to scream and carry on this this. Today's parents really have little consideration for their neighbours. All they care about is their own comfort and getting their kids out of their hair.

And of course if you try to raise the issue with them, they play 'the family card' as if it gives them the right to do anything and make as much noise as they like.

I like dogs. So how about I get two dogs, put them both outside for 2-3 hours a day and train them to bark like crazy the while they are out there. I would never do this or allow it because I have consideration for my neighbour's peace and quite in their own homes.

Parents need to be more considerate of their children's impact on the quality of their neighbour's home lives.

Apart from that, Gowanbrae is a nice place to live.

Moana68 Oh dear ! Fancy comparing dogs to children ! What a strange way of thinking you have and how selfish and intolerant you are . I hope you weren't locked in the house all day when you were kids that must have been truly awful for you. I think you have moved to the wrong place, try the country you will love the serenity.

viking1 That sounds like a response from a parent of screaming children. People are entitled to live in peace in their own homes - that is not selfish, it is a right. My parents never allowed me to scream for hours on end, they brought me back inside or took me to the park - something that today's parents are generally too lazy to do. 'Intolerant' - well, maybe. But who can blame me - screaming children with no discipline from their parents at home, at the cinema, at restaurants, in planes, in fact just everywhere. Not all parents are inconsiderate, but there are enough bad ones out there to make it seem that way.

Be considerate of your neighbours people.

Dogs are loyal, always happy to see you, never disappoint you and love you unconditionally. So you're right, comparing dogs to children is unfair.

Moana68 No kids actually ! But one day I can't wait to hear that screaming ( or is it laughing and having fun ) that
your talking about in my backyard. Most kids go to school during the day unless your talking about noise during school holidays so that would make you, yes, very intolerant. Be considerate of your neighbours and yes get yourself a dog as it doesn't sound like you had a good upbringing.

viking1 My upbringing was just fine thanks. I hope you remember our conversation and will be a considerate parent.

I will get myself a dog and teach him to bark with enjoyment for hours. We'll see how tolerant my neighbours are then.

Moana68 Consideration works both ways. By the way dogs only bark all day when their bored - get a dog it might get you out more. Oh hold on dont go to the park there might be more of those dreaded creatures called children there. I'm done now.

viking1 Yes. Consideration works both ways. Exactly my point. I'm done now too.

lexiegirl Go Viking! Totally agree with you. If you're going to have multiple kids and let them scream for hours in the backyard, buy a bigger block of land! These small blocks of land with houses joined together and a tiny yard are NOT for young families! I'll never understand why these Gowanbrae parents don't teach their kids some consideration for others. Oh wait, they don't have any themselves!

Moana68 I don't hear screaming kids all day where I am in Gowanbrae, although I do hear a lot of whinging and whining coming from the top of the hill. Why in the world did you build in suburbia when you knew there were small blocks and a kindergarten being built. Big blocks with kids is in actual fact noisier due to the echo. Also this is the times whether you like it or not new estates are now small blocks. Think it's time to move on or get over it and learn to fit in with our wonderful mixed community we have here in our Gowanbrae.

lexiegirl huh? you mean from the community centre? not sure i'm following you. Not fair on the kids when they only have 5 sqm to play in. As always, bad parenting.

LL
LL Excellent viking1 and lexiegirl. Gowanbrae is an area for everyone. If it's too small for you and your children then maybe think of moving, instead of involving everyone else in your unhappy lives. The world doesn't revolve around you and your children. Parks are for kids. It's not hard to take them up the street to these . It's funny parents whinge when they have no parks. Then councils give them parks AND they still whinge ! WHY ?? Because they are bored in their lives.. Everyone is busy these days and a lot of people in Gowanbrae are professionals who have different lives. We are quiet and peaceful, go out and have fun, dinners and respect others ... and also A LOT of old people live here in retirement ! Respect them ! If your dog is barking, then maybe your dog is neglected? Hence RSPCA should be notified. I am all for peace and quiet and this was the case in the beginning of Gowanbrae. Good on you Viking1 for stating the facts .. )

"Gowanbrae Moving on Up"

Gowanbrae. Nice, modern area away from the city but also close enough to a lot of things. Friendly and happy. the only downfall, as I live here, 2 families who spoil it for the rest of the community with "bogan-ness" in the garage, drinking, smoking every weekend and kids running amok. Self respect for yourselves and you will own more and go a long way. Respect for others as well would be nice but they spoil it with gossip, rumours and among other things damaging others property. Gowanbrae is exceptional apart from this.
Pros

Cons
  • Bogans who have no self respect
  • car parking as limited on streets

"A new suburb in the middle of an established area"

Gowanbrae has become a most popular choice for those wanting a newer home in a newer area yet still close to the attractions that makes living around the Moonee Valley area so popular. Nestled between the Moonee Ponds Creek and Western Ring Road, Gowanbrae is accessed via Melrose Drive, Tullamarine – just north of Westfield Shopping Centre. First developed in the mid-1990s, Gowanbrae now hosts around 1000 households as well as the substantial Gowanbrae Retirement Village. As with most new developments, the area caters to a variety of needs with houses ranging from compact villas and townhouses to enormous family abodes on big blocks. The largest of these are generally located ‘down the hill’ along the Moonee Ponds Creek with its fabulous reserves and bike trail which enables cyclists to ride into town without having to mingle with road traffic. Given its proximity to Westfield, the Airport West tram is close by, as well as a dedicated bus service between Westfield and Gowanbrae.
