"Don’t bother - go to Blackheath"

Village vibe no longer here. Worst ice cream and expensive overrated chocolate shoppe Josephans! Check out Blackheath or go to Kiama/Berry on South Coast. The underbelly of Blue Mountains is the hyper vigilance and unhealthy lifestyle by the negative locals. There is free bushwalking right on the doorstep yet few locals have actually experienced the beauty. No cycle tracks is also downside, and no one demands for better services for their youth. Batemans Bay or Nelson Bay better to live or visit.

"Peaceful yet buzzing village"

We have lived in Leura since 2013. The community are friendly and its fantastic living within walking distance to cafes, and gorgeous Blue Mountains walks. Most of all the last several years with fires & covid lockdowns, The most beautiful part about Leura is the generosity and kindness and community support that occurred was the most impressional memory i will carry in my heart. We do not have family here; but we truely have a wonderful supportive community.

Loving the new Kings Road corner shop. I spoke to person selling and repurposing some great bits and bobs, shes going to Council seeking permission to operate The Little Shop of Horrors. I hope would have bought the old oil heater but it didnt fit in my car! I heard a couple of collectible cars are going to live on the corner. Air b n b tourists will simply experience the treasures of the neighbourhood. As they say, one mans trash is another womans treasure!

"Leura has everything a family would want"

Leura township is so convenient, we walk kids down to the school and woollies for our daily shopping. Don’t own a fridge nor freezer save on utilities. Great cafes, shops and people. Gets busy with tourist on weekends but weekdays are the best. Katoomba is a 1/2 hr walk on the highway or the more scenic 1 hour to coles and more shops.
Great for families and retirees alike. Katoomba Hospital is only 5mins by car.

"Peaceful town in beautiful location"

Leura is undoubtedly one of the nicest places in NSW. Living in a World Heritage National Park has huge advantages, as there are some of the country's best bushwalks right on hand. In South Leura particularly, the magnificent Jamison Valley is your backyard. It's like living on the north shore of Sydney only friendlier and much, much cheaper. You can stroll to fantastic coffee shops and restaurants while breathing crystal clear air. While there are lots of tourists on weekends, who would deny them the pleasure of sharing this wonderful place. I've lived here for years and now our well kept secret is out. Gorgeous traditional properties abound, which would cost you twice or three times as much in the better parts of Sydney. And now the highway is being upgraded and will soon be finished, the city is only one and a quarter hours away. And to top it off, there's a genuine sense of community, where your neighbours actually speak to you and invite you in.

It appears you are only referring to South Leura ,the north side is very different ,will be writing my own review of over 20 years living here soon, certainly very few friendly neighbours where I am -lots of inconsiderate ,noisy ones and plenty of barking dogs .

looking forward to your review, specially on the North/South question.

I would really like to know about the differences between the north side and south side. The north side looks a bit more rural and scrubby (which I like), but am not sure a single woman should live there if it is not considered as safe or desirable. Is there a general crime problem in Leura?

springside
springside

I wasnt implying a crime problem ,more a noise /barking dog /inconsiderate neighbours problem. Yes there are some parts of North Leura further away from the highway that have a bush location and are probably quieter but the area I live in is nearer to the highway and for all intents and purposes might as well be suburbia anywhere .The amount of dogs in the neighbouring streets and the problems we have had with neighbours over the last 20 years making noise has put me off the area for life . Hope to be writing my own fuller review soon

Springside - you are right barking dogs and droppings all over the place. Lots of tourists visit the Spring and leave rubbish everywhere. Definitely changed and neighbours spy on each other so if you like to go swimming, cover up because there are quite a few Peeping Johns.

Im about to put my house up for sale and cant wait to leave the area 27 years of noise ,bad neighbours and strange religious sects.

I love the spring near the creek, as you can now see the ferns after council removed the blackberry. The new house being built on the Small Snake Creek has so many snakes. I counted six in my last visit to the Spring, including Tiger and Browns. Love that tourists using the spring will get to see the Mountains wildlife up close and personal if they are quiet. Lots of bird life too - Yet to see any yabbies in creek but there is a fair bit of rubbish.

A beautiful town in the mountains with great dining, walks and shopping. Fantastic place to live, as long as you have good heating for the winter!

Rentals in Leura

"Best move I've ever done"

I moved to Leura from Brisbane a couple of years ago and I really love it. I had very fond memories of the Blue Mountains, having lived in Katoomba several years ago and I was keen to leave the heat of Brisbane for the much cooler, cleaner mountain air. I don't drive so I rely heavily on public transport and living less than 5 mins from the bus stop and the station is fantastic. A few things worth mentioning about living up here, sure it does get cold in Winter and it's often overcast but the sunny days and the much cooler Summers are so wonderful that they more than make up for it. Also my pets haven't had one flea since I've been here and we rarely see a cockroach or a mosquito. As mentioned some of the shops are expensive but the shops are unique which I think make up for it and if you want the usual shops you'll probably find them at Katoomba which is only a few kms away. There are several expensive restaurants but there are also a few decent bakeries, an excellent butcher, a very good/cheap Chinese restaurant and an excellent fish/chicken/chips/burger takeaway. If you want to escape the tourists just go to the pub, they rarely go there and you can get good counter meals and in the evenings they often have live music.
Leura is very friendly and I like living in a place that attracts tourists from all over the globe.

I'm 26 and have just finished my primary teachers degree, currently live on the Gold Coast with my dog. I love the beach but equally love waterfalls/bush walking for the outdoor fix. I'm looking at moving to spring wood where my sister is based and just wondered what it is like socializing for a young, single person, is it quite "clicky" or is it easy to make friends? Just sounds more family orientated/older more settled area but I am in need of a change and do love it when I go for holidays.

divineb

Lauraf7, hope you haven't moved there. For a young person, you will go stir crazy unless all you want to do is walk your dog, visit your sister and read books. Oh, and if you want to travel 75 kilometres to Sydney to disco, go for it!

Go to Blackheath - its great community where people actually care about each other. Leura and Wentworth Falls full of stinky old powder puffs who couldnt afford to live on the North Shore. If you want to do lattes with Pru and Tru from Kath & Kim, choose Leura. I bought there so many years ago because the land was cheapest available within 1 hour drive to CBD.

"Living in Leura"

I live in Leura. It's important to know that there is north Leura and south Leura, where the shops are. The price difference is pretty big between the two. I like living in Leura because my daily walk is part of the Cliff Walk where I take in the Blue Mountains most days - you can't beat that. Also, the mountains generally is an easy place to get to know people and good if you don't mind running into people you know. I have lived in Leura 6 years and know my neighbours. It's true there are lots of tourists and locals shop early or late to avoid the crowds.
Katoomba is the main shopping centre for daily living with the local libraries etc. Leura is known for its gardens which are on display every year and generally large lot sizes.

"Too much of a tourist town"

Leura is located at the Blue Mountains and is quite a pretty town. The roads leading into Leura are wide and new; there are also many pretty and cute houses around this area. However, it is too much of a tourist town and on the weekends, it does get very very crowded as tourists flock here for a weekend away or for antiques.

Nonetheless, Leura is a great place to wine, dine and shop. There are many cafes, shops and restaurants to choose from. You will need to pay top prices in Leura in order to get a feed. Expect to pay about $15 a head for lunch at a cafe with a view of the valley. I dined at the French restaurant in Leura and did not think it was good value for money. You are better off with Blackheath for a fine dining experience.

In all, Leura is too "touristy" and does not really provide a sanctuary away from the city. It is wiser to head further north if you are keen for a quieter Blue Mountains experience.

Clearly, you seem to be an expert on all towns. who made you an authority??? I think you mean to say head further west- you can't head north!

divineb

Medlow Bath, Blackheath, and Mt Victoria are all North West of Leura actually. And by the way, she didn't say she was an "authority". I believe that was your word. X

Thanks for the good advice Ruby. Leura is a pretty town. As a tourist, I find Leura does get packed out too quickly on weekends; so much so that we avoid it completely if we get up there after 9:45am. As a place to live, there appear to be some lovely looking houses in peaceful streets away from the town. Probably a better place for retirees than the young.

"A Weekend Nightmare"

Leura is a very pretty town, with delightful speciality shops – and tourists love it. That’s why it is a very busy village on the weekends, when it is hard to park your car and get a seat at one of the highly regarded cafes. The homes in Leura vary from new, mundane homes with great gardens, to dilapidated big old homes needing some TLC.
