"High crime rate."

If you can get past the crime rate and being scared in your home then it's not that bad.

"Convenient and Friendly"

I live in Manunda and love the convenience of being so close to the city on a large block with friendly neighbours and a relaxed lifestyle. Claims of it being a dangerous crime ridden area are unfounded as is born out by the daily police report I download and read everyday. It’s no worse than any other suburb, and in fact is better than most. We wouldn’t move for quids.

"Mostly Marvellous Manunda"

Move away from the main roads that make Manunda's location so convenient and you discover a warm and friendly community living in solid houses on large, flat blocks of land along broad, straight roads.

Historically blighted by low rent and social housing, Manunda is increasingly a home-owner/rennovators dream with low (though increasing) prices for manageable, easily improved homes.

The location is perfect: minutes (by car) from The Esplanade, the city, the airport, Cairns Hospital, the Bruce Highway and the Western Arterial; and positioned brilliantly for shopping, whether at DFO or Raintrees, Cairns Central, Stocklands or the IGA.

Manunda is the home of the excellent (and expanding) Trinity Bay State School, TAFE, Cairns West State School, Francis Xavier and is also close to Edge Hill State and Whitfield State Schools.

Whilst nightlife is not really a big thing in the suburbs, Manunda does boast Brothers Leagues Club, a couple of pubs and is in walking distance to Cazaleys. Plus there is the Apex milk bar and a selection of small takeaways and other food outlets. And, and we love this, a taxi back from a night in the city costs about the same as a pair of CBD drinks.

We moved to Manunda from Redlynch and before that Whitfield. In truth, we were uncertain about buying here (who hasn't heard the negativity towards the Ms?) but really there was nothing to be concerned about. Our 2 years in Manunda have been friendlier than anything we experienced in Redlynch and no more intimidating than Whitfield. Sure there are criminal elements (not that we've experienced any issues), but there was in our previous locations too. We're very happy here. It really is a great location.

The real stars of Manunda, however, are the people. Warm, friendly, welcoming (check out that M suburb song on You Tube), funny, honest (mostly), multicultural, pet-friendly and pretty smart - we must be. Whilst the rest of Cairns sits in the traffic on their commute from hot houses on shrinking blocks to the north and south, looking down on the inner city, we get to have an extra cappuccino before our short trip to work and, ultimately, the last laugh too. Marvelous.

"Close to Cairns CBD shops, gym medical facilities"

Manunda is a convenient place to live close to everything you need, particularly as fuel prices continue to rise. Most people know each other and after 10years of residing here I have had no problems. Would not live anywhere else in Cairns.

"Great suburb with loads of potential"

Manunda's bad reputation is mostly unfounded. Is there really a suburb in Cairns without problems? Don't think so! The whole 'M' suburb stigma with the locals here is a bit over the top, and as with any other city anywhere, the inner suburbs end up being the ones where everyone wants to live, to avoid the traffic that inevitably increases with population growth. Wouldn't want to be north or south of Cairns in 10 years time!

"Great location at an affordable price"

Manunda is a great location - so close to the CBD. I lived in Manunda for 2 years and enjoyed the locality and the people. Our neighbours were great and we had no issues with break ins. There are two shopping centres within walking distance, the TAFE and schools are nice and close too. An easy walk or bike ride to the CBD makes Manunda a great location No need for a car if you want to go green.
I notice lots of new families are taking advantage of the affordability of housing in the area and are moving in and renovating.

"A good place to go past."

Excellent place to live if you're a junkie or a con. Nightly break-ins, thefts, beatings and rape make this a wonderful testing ground for police tasers and capsicum spray. At least you can see where your tax dollars go because they are quite evidently providing the income for the residents who hold all night long drinking sessions in the numerous and ever present council paid tenancies. Best way to look at this suburb is through your rear view mirror.

Not great for

  • Unsafe
  • Predominantly ghetto/slum
  • Low rent degenerates

Maybe in the past there have been pockets of trouble in Manunda but the demographic appears to be changing.

If you are considering moving to Manunda it may be reassuring to read the daily police reports on https://mypolice.qld.gov.au/farnorth/ which show that most of the crime in Cairns isnt happening in Manunda.

"Central location"

I've lived here for 13 years and find the central location a bonus with everything 5 minutes away. The neighbours are friendly and we greet each other by name. There is a wide variety of take-away shops and 2 major shopping centres within walking distance. For families there is the choice of several childcare centres as well as 2 private and 1 public primary school and 1 secondary school. The TAFE college is located across the road from the high school. The bus service criss-crosses the suburb so you are never very far away from public transport. There are several major sporting venues and Brothers Leagues Club.
As is the trend in today's world precautions against breakins and personal safety need to be undertaken but there is no need to live behind bars or barb wire fences. Very dog friendly neighbourhood. Young couples and families are moving in and renovating older homes to rejuvenate the suburb.
