Albert St, Melbourne parking madness!

Has anybody seen the insanity that is now Albert St (up from Hoddle St Richmond) all the way to intersection of Collins St and St Patricks Cathedral.

What was once two lanes has been reduced to 1 with the left land now for parking cars. Now I dont have a problem with more parking but I must say I nearly had a major collision when you converge from two lanes into the new single lane - and there really isnt any major dividing lanes to signify that is parking. You really must see it to understand the madness.

I would love to know if anyone else has driven up lately?

OMG.. You are not the first to have a near-collision on Albert St. Thankfully it hasn't happened to me, but I have heard a couple of 'near-miss' stories.

The layout is misleading, the parked cars are not up against the gutter, so it has the appearance of backed-up traffic, until you realise that they are actually parked - about a metre into the street to accommodate the new bike lane. I'm not sure how successful the new bike lane actually is - I drove along Albert Street on the weekend, and any bike-riders I saw were still riding on the footpath.

The worst part is, not many Melbournians are familiar with the changes, to it's still being used as frequently as it always has been as a way to get into the city avoiding Victoria Street, and then everyone gets a surprise when it's a traffic jam along there.
