Moving to Melbourne, where to live???

My wife and i are relocating from Perth to Melbourne and need some advice where we should look at to live in as we don't know much about the city. We are both professional, I am 42 and she is 37 and we do not have children.
We are not into the nightclub scene but do like bars, wine-bars, cafes and good food. We also love live sports and the arts scene and like to get out and socialise.
Our problem is that we don't really know where to look to live. We would like easy access to the city via tram or train and also have some good places to eat and drink nearby.
Any advice you can give would be very much appreciated

I was in your position 2 years ago.
I ended up buying a home in Point Cook and have never looked back. It's 23 klm from the city of Melbourne which is via the expressway (no lights) and it's only 20 min from Geelong. There are great areas where you can walk or ride a bike. It is such a nice quiet area with excellent shopping centres nearby.
I worked in Port Melbourne for some time and the drive there and back can be a long one due to the traffic. There are nearby railway stations with good parking. I would highly recommend it.

Go to footscray newport or kingsville or Maidstone at the cheaper end. Do not go East or South if you work in the city. Traffic is horrendous. The west and the northwest are all well serviced by public transport as well as good roads. Williamstown has great restaurants and is very trendy. point Cook is good except for the traffic jams. And better still Etihad stadium is only a few minutes drive as is the Arts precinct
hope this helps
