Where to live in Melbourne

Hi,
I am a 40 year old single executive who has just accepted a senior role with Accenture in Melbourne. I am looking for some advise on areas to live. I want somewhere with a good night life more of a relaxed atmosphere such as good wine bars, coffee houses and restaurants rather than intense clubbing. Can anyone recommend areas that I should look at?
Thanks for your help
Sara

you should try the toorak area, or st kilda side. because they have a busy night life with bars and cafes there. Where as i live in narre warren south and there isnt much going on here at night.

I would think Southbank is a good bet. St Kilda is nice as well as the guys have mentioned. Perhaps even Docklands might be something to look into. Has some ok nightlife, but it's very close to the city.

Depends on your 'style'. Melbourne caters for everyone - that's why we love it! For the more upmarket lifestyle - Toorak or South Yarra (the latter being a little more relaxed - Chapel St in South Yarra has everything and would be my pick). Plus it is close to the city and public transport and a gazillion taxis are available right at your doorstep practically (handy if you don't want to drive)!

St Kilda and Brunswick/Fitzroy for the slightly more artistically 'cool' crowd with a touch of grunge and huge selection of nightly hang-outs (Brunswick Street and St Kilda main strips in particular).

And then yes of course there is Southbank which is right smack-bang in the city - nice, but predictable.

Finally - South Melbourne, Brighton and Elwood are lovely too and have some great places for all hours of the day - also fairly relaxed with a great vibe - though Brighton does tend to be a little more on the snooty side than the other two. Elwood would also be another pick for me. Bonus is that it is also near the beach (and happens to be next to St. Kilda too).

Congrats on the new job and welcome to Melbourne!!

I agree with TeacherJo on where to live in Melbourne. South Yarra is fantastic and will give you close access to the city without being too close to work. It has great restaurants, wine bars and cool shopping especially for fashion. And if you want to be near the beach Albert Park, Port Melbourne. I think Brighton might be a little too far out.
