Looking for a home in Mooroobool?

"Good demographics."

The houses on the hills are brilliant. Quiet, trustworthy neighbourhood. There are two streets near the lower end of Mooroobool which tend to get a bit of riff raff, these disturbances never reach the surrounding streets. I take my arvo/evening walk around the neighbourhood and I feel very safe.

"Mooroobool has a bad reputation but...."

Mooroobool has a bad reputation and when we got here people warned us not to buy in a 'M' suburb. We did anyway. It's close to everything, our street is wide and the neighbours are friendly. Mooroobool is a fairly big suburb with some parts worse than others. I have lived in City View, above or west of Irene Street, which some call Upper Mooroobool, for 18 years and have had no problems whatsoever. I wouldn't live anywhere else in Cairns.

Has a lot of break and enters and crime from surrounding m suburb residents. Only good thing is close to town, if you can get a park.

Not great for

  • Low socio-economic status.
  • Lack of footpaths.

Rentals in Mooroobool

"Central and peaceful and only 3km to the CBD, love it!"

I live in a lovely area called Heritage Village and have enjoyed it here for over 5 years now. The Village has a lovely family appeal with mainly an owner/occupier community, children play freely about the place. The birds are plentiful and I love getting up early to enjoy the serenity of the mornings. There is a lovely landscaped pool to swim in and the shops are only a few minute stroll away. The Village is a mix of townhouses and heritage style Queenslanders that give the place real character. Everything is close, schools, shops, library, gym, childcare, sporting grounds...perfect.

Great for

  • Close to schools and childcare
  • Close to city
  • Neighbourly and community feel.
  • Peace and quiet.
  • Shopping centres.

"Traffic hassle free"

Between the north/south dayly migrations we fortunately miss the congestion. I can take 3 different ways home from the city. I can shop at 3 great centres on the way home. I enjoy the drive and love being 5 mins from my city work. Why go up or down the coast and get stuck in the bottle necks when this undervalued area is so well serviced. I am in a village of old Queensland style homes with great community spirit. I can walk the streets and go to the shopping centre with confidence of safety. After 16 years in Mooroobool I have enjoyed my lifestyle here and don't think there is a better place for the price. Big suburb with mixed incomes.

"Good neighbourly and community feel."

I have lived in Mooroobool for over eight years and keep returning! I live beside a creek where people walk their dogs, and it is very quiet. The suburb has a good neighbourly and community feel with an active Neighbourhood Watch (I deliver the newsletters once a month). It is well served by shopping centres.

  • Neighbourly and community feel.
  • Shopping centres.
  • Peace and quiet.

Not great for

"Mooroobool has an unfair bad reputation"

I have lived in Mooroobool for over 5 years now. Mooroobool has a bad reputation as one of the 'm' suburbs of Cairns, but this is fast changing. Our street is friendly, and the neighbours are great, mostly retirees. Mooroobool is handy to the city, handy to Raintrees, DFO, Stockland... everything really. I wouldn't live in any other suburb. Mooroobool has excellent public transport links. There are some bad areas of Mooroobool, but what you need to remember is that it is a very large suburb and the bad area is one pocket on the edge of the suburb. The local leagues club - Pride - is friendly and cheap for food. I walk the dogs and feel safe, but as in any suburb, city or town; don't take stupid risks that open you up to opportunistic criminals.

"Handy to everything"

We have lived in mooroobool for 12 years. It is so handy to everything. Three shopping centers are literally minutes away, in earville, westcourt and raintrees. The city centre is a little further away but still a comfortable five minute drive. There are small parks and dog exercise areas scattered through out Mooroobool. I walk twice a week in the morning and feel very safe as do the other walkers that I see regularly. Kids ride in our street. Our house is on the market and if we can't afford to buy back into mooroobool I'm going to miss it quite a bit. The only down side I can see to living in Mooroobool is having to write all those o's on raffle tickets when filling out your address.

If you are not local then I should tell you that Mooroobool is in Cairns. I have one word for this place - paradise!!. OK it does get a little humid between late dec till late feb but all you need is a little airflow- put a fan on - its a small price to pay for living in paradise. There are some places I wouldn't go but what city doesn't have those. And just don't walk around at ridiculous times in the night/early morning- that's just common sense.
