Mount Nelson, TAS 7007

Mount Nelson is a family-friendly suburb that sits above the Hobart suburb of Sandy Bay and enjoys very leafy bush surrounds. Because many of the homes have access to sweeping views of the Derwent River and due to its close access to the CBD it is considered a prestigious suburb. At the top of the hill there is the old Signal Station originally constructed in 1811 to signal to ships coming and going up and down the river. This is now the site of a café, tourist lookout, and the beginning of some lovely walking trails through the bush. It’s a very convenient place to live here with metro bus transport, Hobart College, local store and short commute to the City.

Dont reccomend the area Before i bought my current home which i am now selling I was planning on moving to mount nelson. But i have recently discovered that with all the heat we get now because of climate change that Mount nelson is a bad area to be in. The fire danger in the area is high and with the hot and dry climate it is destined to burn. But while it isnt burning its bug infested. Ive lived in 2 rentals in mount nelson and both have had bug issues. They've been on almost opposite locations and have both had issues. Dont recommend at all! Keep away!

Alot of people take mount nelson as a shortcut to get to other areas quicker like Sandy bay or even lenah valley so traffic can pile up and due to the one way streets and difficult steep roads it can be a struggle to navigate through. Houses here are quite old and due to the potential land slips due to them being up on the hill i dont think i would feel very safe up there. Definetly would rather be on the flat. Used to rent here all the way back in 2014 and use to get giant spiders due to the bush being so close and the amount of rats i saw on the street was horrendous.

Being up on a hill (340m or so peak), most homes have views over the city. But, it can get cooler and more windy at times. Homes are on larger blocks, most with lush gardens, or weedy more likely, and vege patches, and there are many trails heading downhill or across to the Signal Station. Definitely a place for those who prefer the outdoor life, but then again the city is only a few minutes down the hill. If you do grow veges or fruits be prepared to protect them or share them with the local critters and birds. Some businesses have struggled: the medical center and pharmacy closed down but the local grocery store is still going strong and a new dental center is taking the place of the medical center. New buildings are being constructed near the college. Public transport is infrequent. Cycling up the hill is only for those who are very fit so best to walk making sure you have good footwear as going downhill can be tough on joints. Neighbours are mostly very friendly but some are rather grumpy and intrusive (you get these where ever you go). Wood smoke during winter is a problem in some areas - the council needs to look at phasing these polluters out. There are a few yahoos during the weekend but the cops seem only interested in speed traps (generally going downhill near the college) during work hours. Overall, a great place to live for the convenience of being near the city and near the bush as well.

Such a wonderful feeling to live on the best hill in Hobart!!

The suburb is named for the hill (technically not a mountain) on which it sits. Just about every home here dates post 1967, when a catastrophic bushfire ripped through the area, destroying everything in its wake. The homes are pleasant, yet modest. The suburb is just 15 minutes from downtown Hobart, and many visitors travel up Nelson Road to take in the magnificent view from the Signal Station – truly breathtaking vista of Hobart and the Derwent. This is a much less treacherous drive that that up to Mt Wellington. Mt Nelson is home to a primary school and Hobart College, from which Princess Mary of Denmark graduated.
