Reviews of Mullumbimby, NSW

"Small Town, Large Community Heart"

I grew up in the valleys surrounding Mullumbimby, and now proudly bring our children up in this beautiful area. Mullumbimby is a welcoming town where all people are embraced.
The town is filled with quality cafes and restaurants, lovely shops filled with quality items and friendly people.
The community gardens are a fantastic place to meet people and get a feel for the 'down to earth' culture that permeates the town. The monthly markets are filled with interesting, eclectic items, and the weekly Farmers' Markets are exceptional! Here you will find excellent organic produce, delicious yummy foods, great music and a vibe to be enjoyed.
Our children, like many of our friends over the past 20 years, have attended Hinterland Christian College, providing them with a wonderfully rounded education. As a K-10 college our children have been supported to follow their interests, develop academic skills and knowledge, and grow in their confidence.
Mullumbimby has a wide range of styles of homes in and around the town and closely connected valleys. With sporting fields, town library, variety of pre-schools and day care centres, a plethora of out of school activities, parklands and family-friendly events throughout the year, Mullumbimby is truly one of a kind.

Looking for a home in Mullumbimby?

"Great town, minutes to the beach with a great community"

Mullumbimby is a gorgeous heritage town with palm lined Main Street with huge amounts on offer especially for families with young children. We love the easy beach access combined with the huge range of independent shops stocking locally produced merchandise from organic foods, leather bags, candles, furniture you name it it’s here. It’s a stones throw from Brunswick heads beaches and has a very vibrant community. We have lived here for more than 2 years now and for us and our children there is a great mix. Good library, skatepark, tennis courts and the 50 m lap pool and children’s pool is a must go to in summer. Kiva soa and the Thai massage house is great for working and busy mums who need a quick respite for an hour.
We have children in the community preschool which is excellent and at Mullumbimby public school which achieves excellent results with gardens, yoga and a nice mix of academic/sports based education . Many of our friends also hold the Steiner school in high regard- there’s an excellent choice of schools, even the hinterland Christian college on the doorstep of you are so inclined.
The house prices in the last couple of years have shot up so many people think it’s expensive but there are still good houses to have at good affordable prices. Morrison avenue, prince street, Ann street, poinciana street and argyle street area, are a 3 minute walk from downtown Mullumbimby, and have some beautiful countryside bucolic views and easy access out of town for beach time. It’s worth checking these areas out as they will get a lot of regeneration when the rail trail comes, all these streets are near the old railway track which will in the next couple of years will create access by bike, foot and solar tram to the beaches of Byron and Brunswick. We cannot wait to get electric bikes and be cycling to the beach without getting in the car, safely and environmentally too.
It can be hot here in summer, it’s worth looking at the the streets mentioned as many catch the cool breezes you don’t get in town, we don’t have aircon and we don’t struggle in the summer.
One of my favourite things is dropping our tinny in the river at heritage park- a 5 min walk from town and motoring down to Brunswick heads.
mullum escapes the crowds of Byron and doesn’t feel transient- if you want a town that feels surrounded by beautiful countryside with a culturally mixed community then it’s definitely worth looking into!

Hi Felicity,

Great review on Mullum. I would like to know a bit more about the internet in the town, is it good. Also, is there going to be a train? and when will the Tram to the beach happen?
We are looking right now to buy in Mullum, and have been there lots and just love it..
Can you help? Thank you.

Felicity mackenzie

hey! our internet is good and nbn is being rolled out in the town so will get better. it looks like we are about 18 months off getting the tram/train to the beach... it will really change the town being able to ride a bike to the beach! very exciting. are you moving as a couple or family? what sort of place are you after? its a good time to buyin mullum- prices rise then level, then rise, this is a level time so a good time to get in to the market. are you looking in town, and where are you coming from?

Hi and thank you for your reply :-)

Moving as a gay couple. Me bianca and my partner of 10yrs Gracie. We are from Sydney and lived in Alexandria, Surry hills and Newtown. So we like the diverse aspect. We moved to the Gold Coast for 8 mths to chill out and work out why we left Sydney and what the universe has planned for us next. So we found Mullum and fell in love!!

We know we could learn more about the land and home grown and permaculture, so it is exciting us to be in Mullum for that. We are 38/39, and would love to soak it all up and learn what Mullum can teach us.

We are looking for a house with a bit of land and hope to buy for a fair flat price and enjoy a little growth over time. One thing is on my mind tho.

Flooding. We are a bit loving a property, 4 Myokum st and i have googled the life out of the internet trying to find reports and plans on mullum around floods.

This home backs onto the creek wven small section tho it has in last yr flood apparently flood came to back steps and not under house or insdie.

Now i know i should trust this and jump right in but something is telling me to be sure. So i plan a building/pest report so maybe give me peace of mind.

They have lowered the price and i cant find any other thing around there that may affect it. For example, i know about the planned rezone and development of affordable housing blocks just below the community garden. I think it is a great idea. The trucks should not go down myokum st as a nee round about is happening near the school and the toad will go right to the new development area.

So i know u cant tell me it will never flood. But i do like to know your feedback if you can reply. Also i have googled things we can buy/do to prevent flood water entering.

Thank you and see u in Mullum some day soon maybe! i have a big smile and talk alot so u are likely to see me around.

Felicity mackenzie

Thanks for replying! You will love mullum- we were here in massive flood and didnt get affected- I think the worst areas were orchid place and Ann street the bottom end towards the paddocks. The property your looking at is gorgeous- Taras a very reputable agent. If you are in any doubts I would get an insurance quote- that will give you a good idea how the property has been affected in the past by any flooding! Good luck and look forward to meeting you

"The biggest little town in Australia..."

I've lived and worked in Mullumbimby for 15 years, raised 4 children here and made the best friends one could ask for. Cobbers long day care school is the best that I have experienced, as is Mullum Primary school. The high school has recently been enlarged and offers an excellent choice of electives. We even have our own circus school. There is a plethora of after school activities and all of these things are walking distance from one another. 2 minutes drive out of town and there is an excellent Steiner school. The population is so diverse that no one feels like they're part of a minority. It's possible and quite common to hear people speaking Hebrew, German, French and more within the one cafe. And how we love our cafes. The laneways of Melbourne have got nothing on Mullumbimby. The shopping is as good as it gets and there is no need to leave Mullum for anything you could possibly need. We have more masseurs per head of population than anywhere else in Australia, 3 herbal dispensaries, 3 medical centres and 2 day spas. Woolworths will not change our town!

Great for

  • Cultural diversity
  • Great food and coffee
  • Friendly atmosphere

Not great for

  • The hottest place on earth during summer
  • The mouldiest place on earth during wet weather
  • Way too many ants

"A newcomer's perspective"

Late '50's couple, kids left, downsizing. We previously lived in a tiny village and we are amazed at the convenience of living in a large town again. You can even get milk delivered! Local retail is perfect - we haven't had to go out of Mullum to purchase anything, (including furniture and white goods) and the service in places like Mitre 10 etc is very impressive. Hand-crafted timber furniture at Timber Slab factory is pricey but will outlast the purchaser! Very wide range of eateries. The artistic/creative side of the town is unique too. The quality of the original music is very good. I look pretty straight and a few of the alterno people have given me disdainful looks but the other 99% of the alterno's are good hard-working and honest people. Not too many Koori's to be seen - poor buggers have priced out probably.Very healthy place too - you can stock pantry and 'fridge with nearly everything being local and organic. I've never known a place with so many good looking women! You don't see fat families much either. Watch the pedestrian crossings in the two main streets though. Byron Council has carefully planted head-high shrubs at the entry points of the crossings so you can't see people crossing until you are right on the crossing.

Great for

  • Convenience and diversity

Not great for

  • Pedestrian crossings; blocked open drains on the nature strips and some back lanes causes ponding especially around the southern edges of the town near the open paddock paralell to Ann Street.

Newcomer forgot to add that the local trady's are prompt and well skilled, but no cheaper than any other place.

We are renovating our house- theres plenty of properties ripe for renovation and many families moving have the opportunity to put their stamp on their home. We have found trades reliable and trustworthy- I think the general price of material is high everywhere however you can get good materials at good prices from the tweed which is around 30 minutes away
