"A small town - all grown up ."

We moved here from Sydney 10 years ago and couldn't be happier. It's like living in paradise. We've got a water view from our unit - such affordable luxury would be out of our price range anywhere else.

Redcliffe has a vibrant history, and the main street (Redcliffe Parade) still has an old-world feel to it. The waterfront has been completely renovated in the last couple of years, and it is fantastic. Beautiful large art works , a wonderful war memorial, heaps of good seating along the water. The Settlement Lagoon area is a wonderful place for families - a huge swimming area like an upmarket resort, with a big play park adjacent. A great place for a day out. On Sundays the whole waterfront area is alive with the Waterfront Market - great food stalls, buskers, art and craft for sale.

Half-way along the waterfront is Bee Gee's Place, a street dedicated to the famous group who spent their childhood in Redcliffe. Barry Gibb designed the area, which has a huge long wall of Bee Gee's photographs and stories written by him. At the waterfront end of the walkway is a life-sized statue of the boys as children - this area is a big drawcard for Bee Gee's fans from all over the world. Barry came to open it in February 2013 and it always has a crowd of people walking along reading the stories.

For eating out, Redcliffe has a huge range of eateries. Sidewalk cafes are everywhere along the waterfront, with regular ones like Coffee Club and Banjo's, as well as many local ones. For fine dining you can't go past Mon Komo or The Golden Ox ( which recently won "best fine dining in North Brisbane".) The usual clubs are well represented - RSL, The Dolphins Football club, the Redcliffe Golf Club. On the Scarborough end of the Peninsula there is Morgan's classic seafood restaurant - best fish and chips ever.

Local shopping isn't great - but a short drive to Kippa Ring gives a good shopping experience, and a little further along is North Lakes , with Myer, DJ's, Target, Bunnings.

Redcliffe is very safe area to live - just the usual small-time crime levels. The local kids sometimes hoon up and down Anzac Avenue on a Saturday night, but the police keep them in check and I've never heard of anything untoward happening. There is a good skateboard park in Oxley Avenue which attracts a lot of kids but I've never heard of any trouble there. You can go for a walk in the evening, along Humpybong Creek or the waterfront, and never have to worry about your safety. I'd highly recommend this area for families or retired people.

Great for

  • Good selection of eating-out options.
  • Safe area to live.
  • Affordable water side and just 30km from Brisbane
  • Lagoon pools, dolphins club etc etc.. gret quiet spot
  • Seaside community , boating, sea breezes, restaurants, parklands, hospital

Not great for

  • Ridiculous amount of time & traffic to travel to Brisbane now

"Relaxing Seaside Life"

We moved to Brisbane from Sydney almost 4 years ago. When meeting my wedding make up artist in the area we immediately fell in love with the peninsula!! We found a rental as soon as our lease was up and were lucky to buy our first home here a year ago. We were surprised nobody mentioned this area to us considering we were from the central coast in N.S.W. This area very much reminds us of that area, a beachy, cruisy vibe not far from the city for employment opportunities and stability.

"Everything you could need + some!"

Redcliffe is a gem of the Moreton Bay Region & its easy to see why. Having lived in so many other places, Redcliffe was by far my favourite (though Woorim is a close second). Redcliffe has everything in a short walk - supermarkets, loads of restaurants, cafe's, Sunday markets, waterfront paths & parks, the lagoon, medical & transport. The old & new mix really well & all this just 45 mins to Brisbane. I hope to be able to move back here one day!

"Love living near the water"

I fell in love with Redcliffe over 20 years ago,the first time coming over the bridge.I didn't get the chance to move here until 10 years ago,and couldn't be happier.I love the well maintained foreshore, beautiful lagoon area, the restaurants and the people. This area had a bad name for many years however times are changing and people and investors are realising what a special place this is.Its only 25 minutes to Brisbane airport and ok 1 hour on the train if you must go to the city.Personally I prefer not to go to the Brisbane CBD as no need. Westfield North Lakes is only a 20 minute drive away.I do live east of Oxley Ave though,so this may be why I love it so much

"Great area close to everything only one problem"

Before we purchased we checked the Brisbane airport flight paths to ensure we would not be affected by aircraft noise the information provided indicated no flight paths over our area yet we have flights everyday starting at 4:30 am it doesn’t matter which way they land or take off Airservices ensures maximum noise over people in Redcliffe

I've noticed that the flight paths tend to change and occasionally planes do fly over, sometimes this is due to weather etc - but I definitely wouldn't say it's a regular thing!

"Rapid Gentrification"

The Government has invested heavily into the Redcliffe peninsula and this has lead to rapid gentrification over the last decade. This has encouraged developers to build waterfront luxury apartments and small business owners to open up their cafes and restaurants.

The best cafes in the area:
- Cafe Diversity
- Flock Eatery
- Preece’s
- Oasis

The best restaurants in the area:
- My Greek Cuzina
- Pilpel Restaurant

The best takeaways in the area:
- Yabbey Road
- Burger Time 69

In recent years, the development of Bee Gees Way and the the new ownership of the Redcliffe Jetty Markets has lead to influx of day trip visitors to the region. The markets are located along the entire main esplanade and are reminiscent of the inner-city markets of New Farm and West End.

While Redcliffe has multiple state schools on the peninsula, it is also closely located to high performing private schools in the suburb of Rothwell and a brand new university campus in the suburb of Petrie.

Top-tier private schools in the area:
- Grace Lutheran College
- Mueller College

Top-tier universities in the area:
- The University of the Sunshine Coast - Petrie campus

The Redcliffe peninsula has multiple shopping centres with all the basic essentials (i.e. supermarkets, Target/Kmart, cinemas). However, you will need to drive up to 20 minutes to North Lakes for Westfield, Costco and IKEA.

The most shocking aspect of moving to Redcliffe peninsula was the low quality of housing. The housing mainly consisted of asbestos-built beach shacks. However, over the last few years, these have largely been replaced with brand new homes as new residents take advantage of the relatively low prices. In addition, Stockland has also started expanding their housing developments in nearby Newport and Rothwell. This will lead to more positive outcomes for residents in the area.

The main negative aspect of living in Redcliffe is the commute to the Brisbane CBD. You have two options in this regard:
- Drive to Kippa-Ring station and take the train to Central station (total commute time = 1 hour)
- Drive to Sandgate station and take the train to Central station (total commute time = 1 hour)

The promise of a new train route to the Brisbane CBD was an opportunity to reduce the commuting time and reduce the unemployment rate. However, in reality the new train line that was over-budget, overdue, too slow in its current format and lacked timely connecting bus services. There needs to be a discussion to reduce the commuting time as the train line is currently a detriment to future economic growth in the region. I would suggest an introduction of express services that only stop between the Kippa-Ring to Petrie stations.

Redcliffe is a suburb that has a questionable past and a very bright future. The Government and small business owners have embraced the gentrification mindset and this trend will only continue as more people choose to make this region their home.

"A very special place and an absolute gem!"

If you are looking for a place to call home that keeps up with modern life but harks back at time to how Australia was in it's heyday then the Redcliffe Peninsula is the place for you. Genuine people with an easy pace of life. Pretty much everything you need within a 5km radius. Coast and beaches on your doorstep and the airport , city, and further amenities all within 30-45 minutes. Having lived in many locations globally and nationally I can say that the Peninsula is a very special place indeed. Anyone considering the move won't regret it, but please give it the respect it deserves as we are as a community as good as we are as individuals.

"Stigma"

Well being a ole redcliffe boy myself it is interesting how much this town has changed! My brother and I have moved away from redcliffe a few times but always came back in the end. This time however, upon our returning we spent $207,000.00 with local businesses buying two Ford rangers (new) also buying two New caravans at snook st clontarf to go around Australia. Since buying with have been looked down upon, we have seen first hand how the struggling and homeless have been treated by the permanent residents the police and the council, while we have been adjusting to our new way of life, and also teaching our cattle dogs how they are to behave in social environments. It is appalling what I have seen so far by the powers to be, police and council but more appalling behavior is from the locals. Get a grip people you do habe homeless people living in your suburb. You are not the only suburb to experience such nor will you be the last. Instead of making life difficult for those less fortunate then you, instead of having nothing better to do than sit on a phone all day bitching about the homeless how about reaching out and asking them if they ok? It may surprise you about their story and make you think that at anytime a person can become homeless these days specially in this ruffled economic environment. Its a shame to see and a shame to see how redcliffe has stopped to this level of arrogance. I wish we spent our $207,000.00 in another town deserving of investment.

"Activities a plenty on the Bay."

Redcliffe is a relaxing place with sea breezes to enjoy most days. Markets, kite flying, boat races, outrigger clubhouse, meditation on the beach in the evenings listening to waves lapping, is just part of the community activities. Sutton Beach is perfectly safe for families and children. Botanical gardens also add to the quiet atmosphere. Walking dogs along the foreshore is as pleasurable as taking to the sea to watch some whales breaching.

"We love living in Redcliffe"

We moved here from Melbourne 7 years ago and we love the lifestyle here, it's such a great spot and it seems to get better and better as time goes on.

There's so many great spots for water activities such as swimming, paddle boarding, kayaking, kite surfing, wind surfing, jet skiing, boating or fishing. By boat it's only 20 minutes to Bribie Island or 1 hour to Moreton Island. There's also a variety of local pools from which to choose and an awesome FREE pool which is patrolled by lifeguards at Settlement Cove. Recently they opened an AquaFun park in Clontarf, which I can't wait to try out.

You can ride your bike or walk all the way around the peninsula with a great view of the ocean and over to Moreton and Bribie Island, with the glasshouse mountains on the horizon and there's plenty of nice spots to stop and relax or have a barbecue or picnic. The local council takes great care of the roads and local amenities. Moving from Melbourne we were amazed at how many local facilities were available and at how well kept they are - from gym equipment to dog parks, kids play areas, picnic spots and sports grounds.

There are plenty of places to go out to eat and drink and enjoy the bay views. Redcliffe has lots of little speciality shops along the foreshore and a Woolworths as well as other retail outlets, Peninsula Fair in the neighboring suburb Kippa Ring has pretty much everything else you need, including a cinema complex. And there's a Bunnings and Harvey Norman not far away in Rothwell. For everything else, the major shopping precincts of Chermside or North Lakes are only 20 or so minutes away.

Brisbane airport is only around 20-25 minutes away, which is great for me as a I regularly commute to Melbourne for work. Commuting to the city during peak hour can be a pain, but luckily for us we don't have to do that. Bus services run fairly regularly that take you to Sandgate or Kippa Ring Stations.

It's only about 30 minutes to Brisbane CBD and between 1-2 hours to the Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast and Byron Bay.

I find that the majority of the people in the area are warm and friendly, and we've noticed the demographic keeps improving the longer we live here. A lot of rebuilding and renovation work seems to be going on to improve housing in the area and like us, more and more people seem to be choosing to move to the peninsula.

"Redcliffe local"

My experience in Redcliffe would have to be that old 34 years as I have lived here this long. Probably in the last 5 years I have experienced a lot more roadworks congested roads and people getting very angry as there's no room to move around Rothwell to Kippa-Ring. Scarborough used to be nice but as a local the signs are not really telling the truth about the beaches. The beaches have a lot of rocks stonefish and if you try to swim anywhere from Scarborough to Woody Point even around Suttons Beach put a drag net in in knee deep water or even just 3 m from the shore and you'll see there is a lot of stingrays and jellyfish. At low tide on a hot day the seaweed stinks like sewage most the time. The sea lice is also in the ocean a lot and the sea isn't a crystal clear like in the pictures it's actually murky brown water as we don't have white sand we have brown sand broken up shells. So the beaches are not that good for swimming there is a lot of old people and retired and mentally ill around Kippa-Ring areas as well. It used to be nice and quiet in Redcliffe but now that it's getting so congested people are starting to build a high rise buildings which makes traffic even worse. The car parks are very small at the local supermarkets and there is a lot of anger made mainly because you're nearly hitting other cars as you drive out around corners. As for the new train station you know what that brings to areas.

"Redcliffe is Unique!"

In 2005 I developed the RedcliffeCityNews.com.au following the demise of the Peninsula Post. Being involved in the community I can honestly say thatRedcliffe is unique - it has a personality of its own. A high number of Olympians have come from the area, there are beautiful parks, state level sporting facilities, theatres, culutral centre, art galleries, excellent private and public schools, clubs, waterfront, harbour and so much more. It was the first settlement in Queensland and more recently is the home of Bee Gees Way.

Hi there. I know this is quite an old post now but I wondered if you could tell me anything you know please about the state schools on the Redcliffe peninsula and if you have any experience of any of them? Thanks so much in advance

Mel Vaisey real estate agent
Mel Vaisey

Hi Karen
There are 5 State Primary Schools in Redcliffe:
Humpybong, Clontarf Beach, Scarborough, Hercules Road and Kippa-Ring and also Woody Point Special School.
Then there is Redcliffe State High, Clontarf Beach State High and Redcliffe Special School.
The factual details of each school can be found on the Qld Education website.
As a journalist I had a lot to do with each of the schools and the status and popularity of a school has a lot to do with who is at the helm, namely the principal as well as the participation of the P & C.
And as a parent, my oldest son went to Humpybong Infants School which at the time was under principal Peter Storch, one of the best. It had a strong P & C and is also the oldest school on the peninsula.
We moved the Deception Bay for a short while and when we returned to the peninsula my youngest son was enrolled at Scarborough State School where Peter Storch was the then principal. It was a wonderful school with a strong sense of community and so popular it had to have a cap put on it. That was a number of years ago.
With regard to the high schools Redcliffe State High is very good under the principalship of Shona McKinley. I have had little to do with Clontarf Beach State High for many years so can't comment.
The best way to find out about schools is to attend a P & C meeting and ask questions and go to the school open days. Each school has different pros and cons and you need to assess which one is best for your child.
Hope this helps.

SamanthaP

Hi, my partner and I are considering moving to Redcliffe. Our main concern is we have a 6yr old daughter who needs to attend a special school and we need good medical facilities close by for her health needs. Are the "special schools" in the area difficult to get in to? Is there such a thing as living in a "catchment area" for the school? Is transport provided for disabled children to the special schools? Is there a decent hospital in the area with good paediatric services? Are there good facilities in general for disabled people in Redcliffe? We are coming from the UK so can't really visit the area before deciding on it.
All and any advice and info would be appreciated . Thanks!

Mel Vaisey real estate agent
Mel Vaisey

Hi SamanthaP, There are not only Special Schools on the Redcliffe peninsula - at Woody Point and Redcliffe - but the local primary schools also have programs for special needs children. It would depend on the special need as to which was more appropriate. In general there are good facilities available in the area. With regard to paediatriac services, there are services available and then there is the main children's hospital in Brisbane which has excellent facilities.

SamanthaP

Hi, that's very good to know. She's considered 'high needs' so would probably need a special school rather than being in a special class in a normal school. Redcliffe really looks like it might be the right spot for us!
Thanks for your help.

you are right Marion, I got trapped on the way to Northgate to catch the train into Brisbane the other day in peak hour, took 40 minutes from Rothwell, bogged down well before Nudgee College on Sandgate road, but if i ever have to do it again I reckon I could do it faster as I studied what was happening, I came home from Central at midday to Rothwell in 45 minutes. Train to Northgate and car to Home.

Overpopulated.Yes I was not happy when they decided to build a new bridge and fix the old one up ,(over to Brighton),it has encouraged a lot of people to come here, the rot really started back in the war years, WW2 when the Yanks built a concrete road at the Black Flat at Rothwell (a bog hole)on the way to Mango Hill ,before Salt Water Creek and after Salt Water Creek, it's still there (concrete road)covered with bitumen now, my family moved to that area in 1882 into a slab hut ,they thought it was the ants pants, one of them wrote a glowing reports about the dirt floor coverered with sacks, they got it off one of my neighbours great gran father back then. We have been all stuck in this Hell Hole all this time, and people are still moving here, I can't think where to go,I havn't seem any other place I want to go,I think I can stick it out till I die.

"From Inner city Brisbane to Redcliffe and I'm a happy lady!"

I have previously lived in inner-city Brisbane (New Farm, Kelvin Grove) and so my concerns about moving to Redcliffe included the following; (a) that the commute would be long and tedious, (b) that the people would be unfriendly and rough, (c) that the community would be homophobic (I'm a lesbian), and (c) that the amenities would be poor. After living on the Peninsula for 4 years, I feel as though I can now provide a fair review and while one of my fears were justified, the others I pleasantly found to be far from the case.

Pros
Beatiful beaches and tree lined streets; lovely walking tracks along the water; cool and lower humidity in the summer than inner-city Brisbane; cleaner air; MUCH cheaper groceries and petrol than Brisbane; lovely Sunday markets; a super relaxed vibe; friendly people (for the most part); buses that take you either directly to the city or to Sandgate train station; no parking troubles; easy driving; a low mortgage!!!!!; very pet friendly; fantastic vets and medical facilities; accepting of same-sex relationships (I certainly have not experienced any direct homophobia); some nice cafes.

Cons
It is a long and at times frustrating commute (especially if Deagon deviation is blocked); 20-25 mins drive to Sandgate train station (Redcliffe train line really is needed); the bus to the train takes a good 35 mins; it is difficult to get around if you find yourself without a car at any stage; annoying, tail-gaters often drive on the bridge; occasional general 'bogan' behaviour (we've had some dodgy neighbours a few times); certain streets aren't great - if you can find a place east of Oxley, you're in the better side of town; no good deli options (although Feel Goodz has just opened in Woody Point and is quite good).

A note on the cons, it goes without saying that there are annoying people and less than great streets in every neighbourhood - but having lived in a horrible street when I first moved to the Penninsula, I do think it is important to really examine the street you are looking to move into. While a place and the street view might look great on the internet/google maps, you won't get a good idea of the street without doing a physical look around. You can really feel the difference between good and icky parts of Redcliffe in a way that is much more prominent than inner-city Brisbane.

Overall, I'm very happy that I moved to Redcliffe. I love the small mortgage and the lovely walks and sea breezes. I absolutely love crossing that bridge everyday knowing that I am leaving inner-city life and inner-city noise and drama behind me. There is something very calming about coming home to a beautiful bay life.

Pawley

Hi Lilian, thanks for you comprehensive and balanced review (yes people do read every word). We are thinking of moving to Redcliffe, but our budget doesn't stretch to east of the Oxley, so thinking possibly around Livermore Street way. Is that a thumbs-up or thumbs down based on your experience of the paceway area? Thanks.

Hi Pawley. My husband, myself and 2 boys are looking to move from NZ at the end of this year . Redcliffe is one of the areas we have been looking at as I don't want to be anywhere near the city, too busy for me!! I'm interested to know if you ended up moving to Redcliffe and if so how you've found it? Cheers

Hello! My partner and I are wanting to move to redcliffe as I lived there as a child and have nothing but fond memories. I have a question regarding traffic though, I work at Taringa and I am wonder how long you think it would take me to get there in the mornings. I start work at 8:30 everyday so I am wondering if I would still get peak hour traffic?

"Great if you can afford water view"

I have the water view apartment so it's great. Enjoy every minuite being here. Even better with the new bridge and Redcliffe face life is on the way. Can't wait for it.
New Woolworth is nice.
I hope when Mon Komo (or somthing like that) finish it will be new chick cafes, restaurants and shops. Make Redcliffed more look like Moloolaba.

Great for

  • Affordable water side and just 30km from Brisbane

Not great for

  • Everything looks a little bit dated right now, but the improvements are on the way.

"ISLAND LIVING IN A BRISBANE SUBURB"

Newport, in particular the isles of Newport estate, is one of the newest Brisbane suburbs and is situated just 30 minutes from the CBD. Surrounded by water the peninsular where Newport sits feels like your living on an island. Newport is an ideal location where your only 40 minutes to the Sunshine Coast and 80 minutes to the Gold Coast. A perfect place if you own a boat because within a few minutes your in the water and off to the islands, fishing or just cruising. The suburb boasts young architecturally designed quality homes and has the potential to grow as more blocks are released both canal lots and dry lots. As these lots are released house pricing in Newport and will benefit. The cafe and alfresco dinning lifestyle is becoming more popular with new cafes and restaurants opening nearby to cope with the ever growing need. Newport really is the place to live so please keep it to yourself because if people find out they'll all want to be there!

Is Newport the best, the most expensive and prestigious suburb in the Redcliffe peninsula with canals, etc?

"Redcliffe - Perfect for family living and holidays."

Redcliffe is a northern suburb of Brisbane about 35 mins from the CBD. Redcliffe is an ideal place to live or holiday. Great bay beaches are ideal for families, there are water sports of all kinds as well as cycling, sky diving and many other sports and activities. There are a number of arts and crafts shops as well as galleries to roam around. Have a picnic at one of the parks and let the children play in the playground. There are cafes, restaurants and fast food outlets as well as pubs and clubs. Accommodation is plentiful and home prices are reasonable considering all the amenities and Redcliff’s close proximity to Brisbane.

"small town all grown up"

Redcliffe was once very separated from Brisbane. It was a holiday destination, a weekend shack spot. The real estate boom in the early 90's saw unprecedented development and growth in the area. Old shacks were knocked down and renovators made a killing. With commute distances becoming greater, Redcliffe is now an acceptable distance if you work in Brisbane. Beachfront addresses are quite prestigious and property on the peninsula is fairly expensive on the whole, but renting is a great option here. There are some great restaurants including fish n chippers. The locals are a great mix of retirees and young families and they are friendly for the most part. Looks like this small town grew up.

"An outer suburb of Brisbane by the sea attracting young families."

Redcliffe is a very old seaside town turning into a popular outer suburb of Brisbane and young couples are buying in this area. It is an area where young couples have been able to buy and renovate as and when their funds become available. From here residents commute quite easily into Brisbane for work.

Investors have also bought heavily in this area and there for there are a lot of renters here as well.

As an older town Redcliffe is a real mixture of old and new as the town grows and redevelops.

It can be quite a protected area at times as Morteon Island is off the coast. From Redcliffe you can access the very popular Moreton Bay for fishing.

There is a range of suburban homes, acreage and units available in this area and many activities available for the benefit of children.
