Reviews of Artarmon, NSW

"Underrated suburb with easy access to transport, shopping, hospitals and schools"

Moved here a couple of yrs back and do not have any regrets. Tiny little suburb ideally between chatswood and st leonards enables easy access to hospitals, schools and daycare centres. Artarmon itself has a good selection of parks, eating joints, cafes, medical centres, daycare centres to choose from.
People here are nice and friendly and mostly professionals and families.

"Great location, nice villagey atmosphere"

Have lived in Artarmon for all but one year of my 21 years in Australia and I don't regret moving here for a moment.

Very conveniently located suburb: close to trains, main roads (M2, Pacific Highway) and Chatswood shopping and only 17 minutes by train from the Sydney CBD yet far away enough from Sydney and Chatswood to feel like a suburb. Main shopping area has all your essential shops and gives the suburb a villagey sort of feel. Walking tracks nearby make for a nice bit of exercise or a leisurely stroll.

"Underrated, highly versatile suburb"

Artarmon's location is central to the many services across the North Shore, with Chatswood and Crows Nest's shopping and dining options and the major employment hub of North Sydney nearby. Quality public school options are available with Artarmon Public School having an OC catchment. Add that to much green space, and you've got a highly family-friendly suburb. While the green space isn't actually picturesque compared to some of its Upper North Shore brethren, you've got a fairly decent open space to run about, walk a dog or kick a ball. Artarmon is not often renowned for its enclave of Japanese restaurants, which is unusual, considering Artarmon offers some of the greatest Japanese style cafes, as well as some smaller-scale minimarts. These restaurants are located under the tunnel of Artarmon station and give a highly pleasant vibe to the more bustling section of Artarmon. Higher-end shopping can be found at Chatswood Westfield, just a stone's throw away from the main part of the suburb. Around the western side of Artarmon, you can find some small retail stores and bakeries, so by visiting some of these franchises, you are indeed benefiting the local community. The community here really does thrive, being very family-friendly oriented. Its house prices may be somewhat exorbitant, but if you can get an abode here for a reasonable price, over any suburb in the North Shore, I would recommend it. Public transport is highly convenient, with ready access to the major employment hubs of Chatswood, North Sydney, Ryde and Macquarie Park, not to forget the Sydney CBD. All o the aforementioned locations can be reached by car easily, with minimal traffic going in and out of Artarmon's main arteries.

"Fantastic location"

I was on Hampden Road and it was great. Close to the station with many great cafes and businesses nearby. The Wilkes was my favourite. Artarmon Public is one of the best primary schools in the state. Recommended. Lovely park nearby too.

"With most homes protected by heritage conservation guidelines, Artarmon is a historic beauty"

Artarmon is a highly desired suburb divided by the North Shore Rail-line and features a mix of stunning period style homes and high-density apartment options. The train station and bus routes offer rapid CBD transport as well as easy access to the world-renowned shopping precinct in near-by Chatswood. Local shops, parks and boutiques make living in the area enjoyable and convenient.

Over the years Artarmon has attracted families from near and far and today incorporates a diverse array of nationalities who all enjoy and add to the inclusive and progressive community culture. It also boasts the top NSW public Primary school which has a reputation for excellence in academic achievement.

"A suburb with personality"

I love the diversity and vibe that Artarmon offers. The main strip, Hampden Rd, where numerous cafes, eateries and shops sit is continuously bustling and offering something new. The suburb is popular with professionals due to the proximity to the cbd and has a large Japanese population which comes with its benefits in excellent Japanese dining- my personal favourite being Haru! Artarmon is also one of the most sought after school catchment areas in the lower north shore with excellent public schools are situated. Investors come from the Chatswood and St Leonards where values are slightly higher in search of capital growth.

Great for

  • Close to the city
  • Good public transport access
  • Eateries
  • Family friendly for all ages

Artarmon is one of the hidden gems of the Lower North Shore. Positioned closely to the CBD and Chatswood with great public transport, eateries and such friendly people. It's multicultural vibe makes it a very vibrant place to live and I would recommend as a great spot for all ages. Housing ranges from 1 bedroom apartments up to large family homes making it a great destination to live regardless of what stage of life your in.

"Safe suburb to live in."

I've been living here for 2 years as a renter. A very good artarmon public school here. Good for people with kids. Close to the train line and only takes 20mins or so to CDB. Better live blocks away from the train line otherwise train noise is going to be a big problem. Safe suburb to live in.

Great for

  • Good public school
  • Close to the city
  • Good public transport access

Not great for

  • Train noise if you don't live far away from the train track
  • A lot of apartments, with many people in the area

"Artarmon: A tale of two suburbs"

The railway line really does divide this quaint little suburb into two very disparate demographics. On the west side you have a menagerie of high and medium rise apartments with a very diverse residential cultural mix. Then you have the east side of the line which is predominantly a conservation zone, inhabited by an anglo majority.

The proximity to the CBD and the northern rail corridor is one of the greatest assets of the suburb, and the routing of the new Epping rail line via the North Shore line has provided increased train services to Artarmon. It would be rare to have to wait for more than 10 minutes for a train in peak hours, and more likely to be in the order of 5 minutes between services. Rental accomodation is reasonably priced considering the convenience of the location.

The housing in the conservation area was mostly built around 1930 in either Federation or Californian Bungalow styles. Most of the houses have been restored to a good standard and the streetscape makes for very delightful walks.

A dedicated bike path passes through Artarmon and provides a safe route all the way to the CBD, with detours to various parks and ovals along the way.

"Conveniently located suburb on the Northern stretch of Sydney"

Artarmon is a very nice little suburb that is conveniently located along the Northern stretch of Sydney. This suburb has a good mix of industries, small local businesses and residential areas. It is only a fifteen minutes drive from Sydney city and ten minutes drive away from Chatswood.

Upon exiting the train station on Hampden Road end, you will be greeted by lively small neighbourhood businesses. There are cafes, bakery, convenience stores and service businesses dotted along this side of the station. The Hampden Road side of the station is perceived to be the "livelier and busier" side of town. On the other side of the station, are some very well kept secrets of Artarmon. This is where you find good quality Japanese food. I often visit the small Japanese restuarant that is located across an Asian grocery store. The food that is served there is of good quality and is reasonably priced.

Artarmon is also home to many medium sized businesses. When you venture away from the main residential areas and onto Jersey Road, you will notice many low commercial buildings and warehouses. As expected, during the week, Jersey Road does get very crowded and polluted due to the amount of trucks that enter its precinct.

All in all, Artarmon gave me a very good impression and has made me return on numerous occasions to visit its Japanese restaurant.

"Mixture of Uses"

Artarmon is like many of the suburbs along the major train lines of Sydney in that it has a combination of retail, high density and low density uses. The older homes in Artarmon are large, on large blocks of land – many are Federation style. Because of the large blocks and proximity to the station, those homes close to the train line have given way to apartment buildings, some not very attractive at all, on the southern side of the suburb. Artarmon has a highly regarded primary school, which takes ‘selective students’ in Years 5 and 6 from surrounding areas. The Pacific Highway forms one of the borders of the suburb and in this section there are car dealerships, motor vehicle repairers, hire car companies and other light industrial businesses.
