"Great country town, loved by locals, commuters and treechanger's"

After living Bayside most of my life, we made the call and moved to a lovely new home in Broadford about a year ago. We looked at Whittlesea, Lancefield and Broadford, before finally deciding on Broadford. I absolutely love this place. There are some great coffee shops and cafes to meet the needs of a foodie, a great butchers and bakery to buy local produce, and the scenery is beautiful.

My husband commutes into the city by train, which is super easy and only take an hour. The drive into the city is also easy as its straight down the Hume, but must admit we prefer the train. And yes, the IGA needs an update, but thats not too much of a problem as we have a Woolies, Coles, and Aldi a few minutes down the road.

I'm expecting lots of new residents here over coming years as the town expands. Why live in the horrific traffic of Kilmore, or dour, soulless Wallan, when you can call beautiful Broadford home.

All we need now is a good Botanical Garden to take advantage of the scenery and masses of pretty green space.

"Gem of a town"

Broadford is an unsung gem of a town. Some great cafes and gorgeous rural views everywhere.

Why hasn’t Allens opened a factory store here? Would bring more visitors to our town. Come on Allens, make it happen!

"Friendly community that's growing fast!"

The town appears to be thriving, with residents and businesses setting up home. All we need now is a nice vineyard and a better IGA.

I cannot imagine wanting to live anywhere else.

"Changing demographics and stunning beauty"

We love Broadford. As others have stated, it’s a pretty country town with superior transport links into Melbourne set in stunning countryside.

The key thing we’ve noticed since moving here is the speed of change. With its one hour commute to the CBD, city professionals, skilled tradies, along with pro renovators and land developers have moved in. Lots of new houses now going up, with even more homes being renovated and flipped, which means better street appeal, more facilities and nicer cafes and shops.

It’s changing SUPER FAST, yet keeping its friendly atmosphere. We love it.

"A pretty and fast-changing commuter town you'll fall in love with"

Over the past 5 years that we have lived here we have seen Broadford getting better better and better.

Gone, or going are the slightly 'rough and ready' interstate truckers and replacing them are city workers commuting into Melbourne CBD, which is only an hour away by train and road, and highly skilled tradies.

Part of the appeal of the town is its beautiful rural setting, quiet, friendly folk, and you can still pick a good sized block for under $400k. Great value, if you compare to other corridors into Melbourne.

As part of the change, the shops, cafes and facilities have improved, with some great additions arriving just in the past year.

Hopefully, Woolies, or Coles will open a store in the town as the mid-sized IGA is a throw back to times past.

All-in-all, we love the place and are delighted to see the town getting better, tons of renos and new builds going up. Hopefully, when it turns into the *hot* area the area will retain its character.

"Jem of a country town"

Great country town on the Hume Highway, complete with a 1 hour direct train to Southern Cross.

We chose Broadford 18 months ago and have never looked back. Lovely neighbourhood feel. Quiet. Convenient. Safe!

I just wish Mitchellshire Council marketed the town better and played on its history and beauty more. Noting it’s convenience and decent schools, this could be one of the best little towns in the Victoria commuter zone.

Just needs a better supermarket than the IGA.

"What to see, what to do"

I wouldn't say that this is a tourist town. Really not a lot to do here, unless you like memorials. The people are very friendly though. If they opened up the Allen's and Nestle factory, it would bring a lot more tourism to the town.

"Great lifestyle town just 1 hour from Melbourne"

Great little town, in a stunning setting, with land and house prices still affordable.

I’m not an agent, but with its transport links, big blocks and lifestyle options, I suspect this will be the next suburb/town to experience significant growth.

"Lovely town, just an hour from the CBD!"

Love Broadford. It’s just over an hour from Melbourne’s CBD via car, or train.

Biggest positives are the community spirit; the peace and quiet; the convenience; and the size of the lots you can still get here.

Why do people want a 450m2 lot in a suburb when they can get a 1,000m2 lot in Broadford?

The town is growing with a ton of good quality new builds going up on the estates. Tons of established houses are being renovated and renewed as folk venture out from the city to nicer, less crowded places.

Only negative for me is the lack of a Coles, or Woolies. I suspect one will come before long.

"Lovely town - but a bit unfriendly"

I moved here about a year ago and commute to Melbourne for work each day. I really like living here - it's s very pretty town with lots of trees and surrounded by hills. Unfortunately I have to say that it's just a little bit too far from Melbourne, so I'm considering moving again. The commute in the morning is ok, but in the afternoon, when you just want to get home, it's a bit of a drag. I work at Melb Uni and it takes about 1.5 hours door-to-door using the train and a bit less in the car. The V/Line train is great - runs at least once an hour, seven days a week, and it's clean, comfortable and good value for money. Also close to the Hume Freeway, but most of the town is far enough away that you can't hear the traffic, except on very still nights.

Although my neighbours are nice, if I have one criticism of the town itself, I would say that it's not as friendly as other country towns I've lived in or visited. Even in nearby Seymour and Kilmore, the people seem to be a lot friendlier. But I still think I prefer Broadford, because it's a much more attractive and peaceful town.

Great for

  • Lots of trees and clean air
  • Quiet
  • Good transport links to Melbourne

Not great for

  • A bit isolated
