"Simply Sydenham."

Sydenham is a sweet family friendly neighbourhood. With plenty of schools nearby, and a variety of parks and walking tracks, this suburb provides a wonderful lifestyle to raise a family. Walking distance to Watergardens Shopping Centre, train station and 5 minutes drive from Caroline Springs lake.
A comfy little hood in Metro Melbourne.

"Great Suburb!"

Read a few reviews from some nutbags who think this area is overrun by crime when really that is the biggest lie i have ever heard. Coming from a bloke who lived in Footscray back in the 2009 days, i must say this is heaven. Do you know where i have been mugged, and under threat? Footscray! St Albans, but i won't sit here and listen to the dribble that Sydenham is dangerous. I live not far from the station and i must say the essence of nature and the quietness is so absolutely beautiful, nothing better than the sunsets you see at sydenham around the melton hwy shops. Just beautiful. Life here can be pretty boring however, for someone who is 21, it can feel very lonely, this is why i think it is better to move here with a partner instead of alone or with your kid. As every suburb goes, exercise caution at night near the station especially when it is late, some of the areas especially near CRC can be very poorly lit and as a result make you prone to things like mugging, but in my experience this has never happened. I always walk home after footy or cricket games at 10:30 - 12:00 AM, while it is quiet, i never noticed anyone peculiar hanging by. My brothers live in St albans and it is the opposite

"Best in the North West"

Sydenham is close to everything.... schools, public transport, multi ways to get into the City by car. Train to city 30mins and car 20mins. Melton hwy new bridge over the train line will boost the price up, watergardens station right next to watergatdens shopping centre. Fitness clubs... list goes on and on.

"Great place to live"

One of the greatest suburbs in the north west corridor. Close to the cbd by train or car, great shopping, great sports facilities at the community hub, good childcare options, I have never experienced any of the crime people are talking of and I have been a resident for over 20 years. Watergardens shopping centre offers a great variety of stores, the train station is manned almost all the time, buses are frequent from both the shopping centre and the train station. The library offers wonderful programs for the young and elderly. Sydenham has some great fast food options too. It’s a great place to live at all life stages.

"Yeah Nah"

Sydenham is a place I would not recommend bringing kids to. Hanging out anywhere around sydenham after sunset is dangerous. Half of the houses in our area have been broken into, and emergency response time is non existent. It is quite a multicultural area, so you always see african, asian, white, and middle eastern people around, so that is a positive. Watergardens is not a good place unless you are in a group, people regularly get robbed. Honestly, unless you have to live here, do, you may be lucky, but be careful. Finally, with the increase of meth, methheads are common and scary to run into

  • Watergardens Town Centre

"Good Suburb"

I recently moved from Sydenham, due to life changes. I now live in the south eastern suburbs.
What I like about Sydenham is that it is not over crowded. You can go to the supermarket and not feel like your whole neighbourhood is there. In our new suburb some supermarkets don't have many checkouts open, u would think they would try to accommodate to the population of the area, it isn't the case at all. They also seem to always run out of at least one item I need.
Watergardens isn't as big as highpoint, but it has everything you need.
If you like going to the gym there are lots of options, and you don't need to stress as much about finding a parking space.
Renting or buying a house is affordable, I am currently renting and looking to buy a place. I am going to have to pay double for a home, I don't think it will be as nice as our Sydenham home.
It is handy being closer to the airport.
I saw comments about crime in Sydenham, we might of been lucky, but our house and cars never got broken into. Our neighbours were also good.
I personally think Sydenham is one of the friendlier and good Suburbs out West.

Great for

  • Close to Train station and Shopping centre
  • Close to Childcare and schools
  • Quiet streets
  • Not too far from city; close to countryside and airport

"Sydenham is great 16 years"

Sydenham is a great place, i have been raised in Sydenham. the only traffic problems there would be would be getting on the calder freeway on the weekend or in early morning can sometimes be a nightmare. it is very quiet at night, if you live near the train station, you will of corse hear the trains but part from that there is nothing to really complain about. When i was younger we moved from Kings Park to Sydenham and it was the greatest decision to have been made by the family.

Great for

  • Safe nightlife
  • Close to Train station and Shopping centre

Not great for

  • Crime esp. at the station

"Best in the West"

My review of Sydenham is similar to what others have written.

Sydenham is a suburb 25 km North-West of Melbourne CBD. The best thing about Sydenham is the Watergardens town centre where everything is all in one place e.g. shopping centre, train station, library, gym. This is very convenient especially for those without a car and/or who live close to these facilities. Medical centres such as Medical One, are located on Melton Highway, not too far away from Watergardens. Trains are frequent especially in peak hour with every second train running express in the morning peak. The train takes 35 minutes to the city (non-express).

The downside would have to be the crime at the station. Cars get broken into on a frequent basis. I also happened to be a victim of bike theft (it got stolen from the bike stand beside the car park/under the stairs). However, this was before the PSOs came so the area should be a bit safer now.

Although the western suburbs of Melbourne have bad reputations, there are lots of things to like about Sydenham which makes it the best in the west with the pros outweighing the cons.

"Excellent Suburb"

Sydenham is close to everything...there is Watergardens town centre/station, schools, gyms, medical centres....all these are either adjacent or within walking distance to each other. The station is staffed and the train ride is only 35 mins to the city. It is also about half an hour drive to the airport.

There is a bit of crime here; cars can be seen smashed at the station car park every now and then, broken bottles can also be seen on the footpath and grass....but I suppose this sort of stuff is common in many suburbs.

Overall, Sydenham is an excellent place to live and I highly recommend it for families.

I cannot help but agree with Matt. Your comments are an accurate depiction of Sydenham. Council has taken steps to improve the parks in the suburb. Hopefully with the new PSOs petty crimes such as smashed car windows at the station will reduce.

Sally76

strongly disagree with your comments and title: "Excellent Suburb" Matt_Costa. Almost everyone I know who lives in Sydenham has had their car broken into at the station. Two friends have had their house broken into! I always see litter scattered on the keilor melton highway and near Watergardens shopping complex representative of a third world country. Very depressing place to visit/drive through.

Advocate

It is obvious that a 3rd world country does not even resemble what Sally_76 is implying of Watergardens. Trying living in one for a change....

Sally76

I would suggest you re-read your comment which contains very, very poor grammar.

"Not impressed"

Not impressed, been living here for a few months, car parks at the station are a scary place after 7pm. The occasional hoon driving happens and very unhappy with the cops not responding to a emergency call. I don't think this will be a good sale in future too, as the safety of people will out weigh the value of the property and people will not want to live in a unsafe place.

Not great for

  • Needs more train station car parks

"Wish I hadnt moved"

I moved to Sydenham to get away from a violent, unsafe and noisy suburb. Unfortunately, I have come across every single one of these things on multiple occasions since I moved here 7 months ago. No one seems to have any respect for their neighbours regardless of whether they know them or not. The only good thing I've found is lots of gyms and Watergardens. Apart from these things, I can't wait until my lease is up. Sorry Sydenham.

"Great suburb"

One of the best suburbs in western suburbs of Melbourne. I was originally from Hoppers crossing there was a lot of Hoons and family disputes where cops had to go to the house and sort them out... was planning to move to tarneit or truganina which is surround suburbs near Hoppers but I have mates living there saying there was to many break ins and stolen cars... I believe it is due too younger families moving to those suburbs due to it is affordable... anyways my conclusion is ghastly I have been in Sydenham for the past 6 months and enjoying every single day of it...

i love Station Streat @ Watergardens shopping centre... good place to chill with your friends and hang out... also the station is right across the road from the shopping centre... so when you finish school and work and need to buy something just have to walk across to watergardens.

overall i will rate this suburb in the top 10 western suburb to live in.

"Lock your doors day and night in Sydenham"

Home break-ins, car break-ins, broken glass, I got off the train the other night after work to find some kids had started a fire in the car-park, and my car had been bounced around towards the fire .. my daughter called 000 and the fire-brigade arrived shortly after. It was scary.
That's what you get with unlit streets, large dark unpatrolled areas, and teenagers with nothing to do after they've been sniffing paint fumes. don't know what I'd have done if my daughter hadn't been there - as it was I was very unnerved.

"Unsafe, Dirty Streets, Polluted Air at Dangerous Levels at least once a week."

There are screaming domestics day or night spilling out into the streets;
Rubbish and garbage is let blow all over the streets, never to be picked up, collected by street cleaners;
Street lighting is lousy - it is dangerous to go out to your letterbox after dark;
Supermarket trolleys gather on pavements in residential areas;
The rents are high, and the prices at Watergardens supermarkets are very very high - clothes, shoes - well, they're just plain two years ago.
Car windows are smashed on a daily basis around the supermarket and the train station ...
And on top of that, the Environmental Protection Authority reported this year that air pollution was at dangerous levels on an "average" of once per week in Sydenham. I moved away 6 months ago, and my bronchitis, which was constantly flaring up, has cleared up! ....

i don't know where you are living, but Sydenham is not a rubbish suburb, i have been living in Sydenham for 16 years, how dare you say such bad things about my beautiful home town. why don't you leave instead of lying about it.. We don't live in sunshine i have been out at 12AM- 1AM and i am still in one piece to tell you about it.

Where do you live in Sydenham? I've been living here since 9 yrs. I've never experienced polluted air :-) you must be living in Sydenham of different planet......

Hate to break it to everyone but there is a drift track just north of Sydenham, and a lot of people in the area have tricked out cars. It's basically the Hoon capital of Melbourne. The littering is from lowlives living on fast food dumping their rubbish out their car windows. The fine print of Sydenham is basically the whole area has been occasionally exposed to burnt rubber smoke from Calder Park Raceway. Police are barely present in Sydenham unless they're called, there is no active Police Station closeby other than Melton and Caroline Springs. There is theft, damage to property, hooning and underpolicing. The Calder Park Drive, Melton Highway intersection has traffic that could probably be comparable to the noise a Jet would produce albeit momentarily and occasionally instead of a constant flow. If you like cars it's fine, it's pretty cool. Very unsurprising the EPA is speaking up about the area's emissions. If police impounded cars maybe there'd be some changes.

I love being able to walk to the bakery, chemist, doctor, milkbar...etc! Public transport is at my door step as well as public schools. It would be even better if there was more catholic schools in the area (high schools). Watergardens has a huge selection of shops and restaurants, as well as the homemaker centre with everything that you need at a very short distance. I feel safe here and my neighbours are the best, we get along really well!
