How bad is the smell from the paper mills in Traralgon?

I am moving to Traralgon in a couple of months from the UK. I keep reading about this "smell" from paper mills. Is it really bad or is it a thing of the past? Any advice on the areas I should look for (for renting)? Thanks .. Rj

The smell from the paper mill is a constant problem. It smells like sulphur dioxide or rotten eggs. The dioxins, white and black liquor and other toxic chemicals all blow down wind onto Traralgon as well as seep into the water table in the area. The chemicals are known carcinogens and I wouldn't like to risk living there.

As far as renting is concerned, Morwell township is more realistically priced, easier to get around, no smell except for probably twice per year when the wind blows ubusually from the wrong direction. The beuty of Morwell is its geographically central to everything in the Latrabe Valley. All the schools are the same if you have kids, all three towns (Moe Morwell and Traralgon have reasonable restaurants and shops. Traralgon is very congested cramped into a small area, high crime rate because of the generally high unemployment rate, floods during winter and spring and yes, that smell.

I have lived in traralgon east for 2 years and the area takes alot to get used to ...it's a rough end of town. ( wish I had of known it was so rough before I moved.)
as for the papermill u do get used to the smell and it's not a year round smell.
but the other end of traralgon is far nicer.
the good thing about traralgon is every thing is a close distance away.
bad thing is in 18 months I have had my parked car crashed into twice. by trickier grr

Looking for a home in Traralgon, VIC 3844

I used to live west end of Traralgon and yes had the paper mill smell (and used to give me headaches) it was terrible some days (fortunately not all the time). I am also originally from the UK. I would not have moved to Australia to live in Traralgon, we moved over to Queensland originally but husband found his ideal work in the valley. Personally if I were you I would move to another area of the UK instead! The valley has some nice places but the 45 day mine fire was terrible and living in Morwell well no way it was a lot worse for them right on top of the open mine and the next town Moe not great either. Morwell even more rundown last time I ventured there than Traralgon. The whole area has gone downhill fast, wasn't too bad when we arrived 6 years ago. Shame really as most of the people in the valley are so nice, friendly and deserve better. My daughter was born there and has sensory issues that I am sure came from the fact we lived there under the cloud air of pollution ;(
