Murray Street

"back off the main street, this is a fabulously quiet street in great location"

Murray street is back off the Great Ocean Road and back from the beach. It is a short walk down to the beach where the beautiful water welcomes you.

It is not a busy street and it is ideally suited to those seeking a seachange, or looking for a quiet place to settle down out of the larger cities.

Well supplied shops are nearby and the bottleshop even has Little Creatures Pale Ale which is a big selling point for some.

Anglesea

"a safe place perfect for young families"

My family stopped here on the way out of Melbourne. It is a great beachside location with a wodnerful feel to it. I wished we could hvae spent much longer here.

Despite being on a major tourist road, Anglesea has a wonderful quiet feel to it making it feel like a great place to live. Quiet and relaxed.

The perfect spot for a seachange without going too far out of the way.

Alfred St

"Pretty little row cottages for great inner city living"

Alfred street is a small street close to the city. It is very narrow and has very narrow footpaths. There is not a lot of street parking available.

The cottages make for a very pretty little street, although there are a lot of houses making the street quite busy with foot traffic. As the roads are so narrow there is not a lot of through traffic.

However, it is very close to the city and well serviced by smaller shops. You can see the MCG and hear it during big games.

It is a quiet street, despite the large numbers of cars travelling on the major roads nearby, there is very little traffic noise.

It is the ideal spot for young professionals that want to be close to the city but don't need a lot of room to move.

Carlisle Street

"A great place to stay, but not necessarily to live"

The positives are it is in a vibrant and exciting area with plenty of places to eat and drink and with good access to public transport. However, that excitement comes at a cost.

Carlilse street is an extremely busy street and carries a lot of traffic which for people with young children or cats can be a little unnerving. The trams also run along the street making catching the tram easy but just adds to the traffic on the road.

It's an easy stroll, if a noisy one, into St Kilda to the Beach and Luna Park. It is also very easy to get in the car and head to Albert Park, the Botanic Gardens or the city.

The beach is a great place to go with young children to play in the sand, and there are playgrounds for them to play on. However, the one I found was a little dirty and right by a main road making it difficult to hear anything other than the drone of countless cars.

Acland Street

"A great blend, from quiet and leaft to busy and vibrant"

We visited Acland street while staying in St Kilda. We were hoping our apartment would be on Acland street as it was a wonderfully quiet and leafy street to walk down. Unfortunately for us it wasn't.

But, the quiet leaft end of Acland street would make the ideal place to live. A lot of well established trees shade the street and with traffic restrictions there is very little through traffic. It is well suited to families.

At the other end of Acland there are the shops and cafes. It is the bust end of acland and as a result is much noiser. It is much more geared towards young singles and couples.

Either end provides great access to the city with a lot of public transport and there are a number of good quality bars close by.

The supermarkets are of a good size and there are a wealth of other shops and places to eat.

St Kilda

"A wonderful beachside location close to the city"

St Kilda is a vibrant and busy little seaside suburb. There is so much going on all the time, and a constant stream of people.

It is easy to get to and from the city, and the beach is right there. There are a lot of places to stay for tourists but that is usual with such a vibrant beachside suburb.

There are plenty of shops, and a good range of them to including the obligatory fish and chip shops.

The supermarkets are of a good size which is often unsual for such a built up and busy area and the staff are friendly and helpful.

While there are a lot of postives, it is very busy and there is a hint of something going on under the surface. It is a popular spot for the ladies of the night from reports but I never saw anything that made me worry with my two year old.

For young families the beach is right there and there are playgrounds, although the one we found was by the beach right by a major road. While it was set back a lod it was not the ideal location as you could barely hear yourself think let along talk to your child. It was also dirty.

You should try the adventure playground off Neptune St http://www.portphillip.vic.gov.au/print_adventure_playgrounds.htm

It has weird opening hours but it is really fabulous fun :)

Yes I have to agree about 'something going on under the surface'. We stayed for the long weekend in St Kilda. By day beautiful as was Acland St. However at night feeling very unsafe walking along the main road along the strip with motor bikes ripping up and down the street. Drunks hanging out of a noisy hotel neat Woolworths. We were also warned by a local not to go near the park opposite the beach at night as Melbourne is experiencing their own 'ice' problem. Sadly saw a young girl stoned and staggering across the road. Coming from Sydney I thought St Kilda would feel 'safer at night'.

"A great location for the young professional"

With shops and great eateries close by this is a wonderful little spot to live for young professionals and couples. There are some unattractive parts off the main roads, and the main roads carry a lot of traffic. But the trade off is you are in a very hip and up and coming area.

There are more than enough places to go out and enjoy some great food, and a lot of great speciality shops.

But it is not geared towards families. This is an inner city location for people that want to be close to the city and don't need a lot of room to move.

Saxon Street

"Unattractive street with hidden gems"

There is no doubt about it, this is not an attractive street. It looks industrial, it feels industrial and for the visitor not at all inviting.

However, hidden in this industrial setting are a number of fantastic apartments in a prime location. Sitting one street back from Sydney Road there is a background of traffic noise but being so close to Sydney street where there are a lot of great places to eat and shop more than makes up for it.

There is a large supermarket close by making the weekly grocery shop very easy and if you're not buying too much it is easy to walk the whole minute to get there.

It is not far from the city and there is easy access making this a great location for young professionals and couples.

Richmond

"Great access to the city in a quiet area"

With main roads bordering Richmond you could be forgive for thinking it would be a loud area. Quite the oppostie. Once you step into the tighly packs streets away from the main roads, it is a wonderfully quiet little haven.

Being so close to the city, the MCG and Botanic gardens there is plenty to see and do to keep you occupied.

However, it is not the best suburb for big car lovers as the streets are small with little available street parking. A great place for young professionals working in the city that love the city nightlife and shopping.

Armadale

"Great location close to the city"

I visited Armadale a few times while visiting family in Melbourne. It is a beautiful leaft area that would be a great place to live.

The main roads running through Aramdale carry a lot of traffic and can be quite noisy particularly during the day.

There is easy access to the city and it is not far from St Kilda or the Botanic Gardens if you want to get out and about. While I only saw a limited amount of the area I would recommend it for singles and couples, especially professionals.

"A busy yet vibrant area"

I have visited here a number of times over the years and have always enjoyed my stay. The area is very busy, but what else would you expect being so close to the city?

It provides easy access to everything in Melbourne and offers a great place to walk along the river down towards the Botanic Gardens.

It offers a quieter, cheaper alternative to central Melbourne but the proximity to the city that you feel like you are in the city. While it is quieter than the city it is far from quiet.

There are more than enough places to eat out and shop here.

"A great place close to central Melbourne for singles"

I visited apartments here and would do so again with my family. It provides great access to central Melbourne without the same noise level.

It is just a short walk to the riverfront and across to central Melbourne giving you all the shops you need and transport to go anywhere else in Melbourne. Its also not far to the Queen Victoria Gardens which is a great palce for a stroll.

It is a wonderful palce for singles and young couples who want to be close to Melbourne.

Hillcrest

"Easy access to the city in a developing area"

There is a real blend of houses in Hillcrest from small courtyard homes, beautiful new homes and older homes in need of a bit of love and care.

There are a number of parks and playgrounds making it a great place to raise a family. However, the play equipment at many of the parks is not in as good a condition as the surrounding suburbs.

Hillcrest is well serviced by public transport with buses running down North East Road as well as Fosters Road. Some of these buses connect with buses running on the obahn making the trip into the city very fast.

Riding to and from the city is easy with well marked bike lanes, and driving to the city is quick and easy.

However, it is clear where Oakden finishes and Hillcrest begins. The footpaths are not in as good a condition and many of the houses are not well maintained. There are still a number of old trust homes in the area although this is changing with many being knocked down in favour of two courtyard homes.

There are a number of shops close by making shopping easy.

King Street

"Nice street in the western end of Melbourne"

I stayed on King Street a few times on visits to Melbourne. There are a number of hotels in the area and its an easy walk to Spencer Street Station.

With Spencer Street Station so close it makes getting the airport shuttle really very easy.

King street has a number of smaller shops and runs down to the river and Melbourne Aquarium making it an ideal location. However, being central city and close to the main train station it can be a bit noisy at times. Where King Street meets Flinders street it feels a little unsafe as there are overpasses, narrow footpaths and heavy traffic.

It is a perfect location for single who want to make the most of Melbourne's nightlife.

Geelong

"A great place to live not far from Melbourne"

Visiting Geelong it was apparent it was a vibrant and thriving city full of activity. There are a number of places to shop and it provides the gateway to some of the best coastline Australia has to offer.

It is a lovely place to stop and visit and it had a great feel.

The traffic along the main roads is heavy, especially along the Prices Highway, but this is to be expected. Once you get off the main strips the streets are quiet and peaceful.

Northgate

"A great place for young professionals and families"

Northgate is a newer area, with well landscaped gardens and a lot of parks and playground.

There are a lot of parks close by providing wide open spaces for playing football, cricket or flying a kite. The playgrounds are top notch and kids love them. On top of this throughout Northgate there are exercise stations that have public access exercise equipment in good condition for you to use.

Nortgate shops provide a spot to get movies, hardwarre, groceries and have a meal. While Greenacres, Ingle farm, Gilles Plains, Windsor Gardens and Tea Tree Plaza not far away.

Some parts of Northgate gives you a clear view of the city lights which is a beautiful sight.

Nortgate is well serviced by public transport with buses running regularly into the city. Cycling into the city is easy as well, and will take 20-30 minutes depending on how fast you ride. It is a safe ride too with well marked bike lanes the whole way.

The houses in Northgate are new and blend well with each other and are all new. The block sizes are small but houses are placed well on blocks effectively using the space. However, with so many parks and public spaces available who needs a big backyard?

I looked at a number of houses in Northgate before purchasing my perfect house in a nearby suburb. This gives me access to all Northgate has to offer.

"A lovely spot to live and a great spot for a wedding"

I spent some time here for a friends wedding and it was a wonderful time. A beautiful city situated on the Murray River with some lovely buildings and places to stay.

It was nice and green and easy to get around. The area was serviced by a good range of shops so if you needed anything you could get it.

This would be a place that I would consider living in and would definitely visit again. Nothing can beat sitting in the beautiful Autumn Echuca sunshine overlooking the River Murray.

Larkins Road

"Quiet friednly no through road with a good coverage of trees"

This is a nice quiet street lined with family homes. There are shops close by and transport to and from the city is good with the train not too far away.

It is a friendly street where the neighbours know each other but aren't in each others face all of the time. It would be a nice place to raise children as the road itself does not take too much traffic.

Despite being a reasonable distance from the city, travel to and from the city is quite fast with the Salisbury Highway. Getting out to the Barossa is easy too and a short 45 minute drive away.

Gordon Street

"easy access to local facilities and nice wide street"

Gordon Street is close to the Port, Arndale and Westlakes. Getting into the city is easy as it is a quick trip straight down Port Road.

The houses are old but tend to be well maintained, although there isn't much greenery on the streets. No large trees shading the area.

My Grandparents lived on Gordon street for many years and were quite happy. However, Gordon street takes a reasonable amount of traffic that tends to travel quite quickly due to the long wide stretch of road.

Parts of Gordon street sit across from an industrial estate although there is little noise or pollution that comes out. It is a neighbourly street with my grandparents making some good friends.

The property value is well and truly on the up. There is great potential for it to be a great suburb but I wouldn't consider it there yet. My grandparents often talked of recent breakins and people poking their head over the fence to have a look.

Albert Park

"Its a well established area on the improve"

My grandparents lived in the area for a number of years. Nice old houses, on big blocks with a number of newer houses being put up on split blocks.

It is a nice enough suburb with easy access to the city and shops. Arndale and Port Adelaide are not far away. My grandmother had a number of good friends in the area which made her happy.

However, cars travel the wide streets at high speeds and there are frequent break-ins and property damage. People walking along the street seem often banged or tapped fences with the sole intent of upsetting dogs.

The upside is, the houses are nice and on big blocks, there is easy access to transport. Prices in the area are definitely on the rise.
