Is it safe to swim in the canals boarding your property?

We have started looking at BBWaters as our potential new home to raise our family and we are really keen on a waterfront property. I'm concerned my little boys will end up as shark bait! lol!

Hi Lisa,
I would definitely avoid swimming in the canals on the coast. The bull sharks love to use the canals as breeding grounds and sightings are a frequent occurrence.

Hi, I lived on a canal in Broadbeach Waters for 13 yrs. As a teenager I swam in the canal. Often eels and stingrays would swim around the boat moored at our neighbours jetty. Canals have had sharks. I wouldn’t swim in canals these days. Good luck with the move Broadbeach Waters has some great streets. This article sums up your shark question. https://www.goldcoast.qld.gov.au/documents/bf/dangerous-aquatic-organisms-factsheet.pdf
