Affordable but safe places to rent in Melbourne that have good transport links to CBD?

Melbourne (CBD), VIC 3000 is located within the Melbourne local government area, part of the Melbourne (Greater) Region in Victoria.

My wife and I will move from Europe to Melbourne in abouth 3 months and we are now starting to look around possible areas to move to. We want to spend an absolute maximum of $400/450 per week (preferably less) but we want to ensure we live in a safe area with excellent public transport links to the city. I will work in the CBD and my wife will proably study there, and I would really prefer to not buy a car.

If anyone could recommend suburbs that meet our criteria that we might find a decent big single bedroom apartment?

Thank you for your answer. I don't know yet a lot about the city so it's a bit hard for me to choose the right area. We would like to live without a car, beach is for sure a big bonus but the only people we know in the city are living in Thornbury so we don't want to live far away from them. Is port melbourne a good choice?

Oh yes absolutely Port Melbourne is amazing, I actually used to live there myself! It's a little more expensive though, that's why I didn't mention it, but browse here on Homely in the rentals and you might find a nice apartment. It would be my number 1 recommendation if you can afford it 😀

Hi Adam, it seems a fantastic place but probably it doesn't fit in my 450$pw budget...

You will find that you are spoilt for choice in Melbourne as good transport network and plenty of affordable apartments in your price range due to many new apartment towers going up.

I'd recommend homely! They have a great tool that lets you draw on a map your search area. Combined with the filters you should be able to find a place quickly. I'd suggest looking at Brunswick. http://www.homely.com.au/rent/brunswick-moreland-melbourne-greater-victoria?price=0-500 It's a great neighbourhood, close to Thornbury with good transit.
