Best suburb for young people halfway between Mornington and CBD

My partner and I may be moving to Melbourne and one of us will be working on the Mornington peninsula and one will be in the CBD. He will probably be getting public transport to the CBD and I will be driving to Mornington. We are both in our mid twenties and want to have a bit of nightlife but still safe. I appreciate this might be a tricky one as both are looking at different ends of Melbourne but if anyone could help that would be great!
