Much appreciated.

So I went back to Pizza Espresso last night after being so devastated the previous week because it was closed. Well, I am still in love with the food here, I mixed it up and had a Pizza topped with Roaster Peppers, Ham, Salami, and a little cheese. So tasty!
The highlight? The little jars of Chilli in oil on the tables. No one does this, it's a very Italian thing to do, and wow does it make their food just pop. I also tried the Chicken soup, which was very nice as well. VERY cheesy, but very tasty as well.
5 out of 5 for Pizza Espresso!!
AJ
T17 in Box Hill North is not far away and they make traditional, amazing Pizza
I like Pizza Espresso but I haven't been there for a while but it was quite good!
/me mental note: search for this holy grail of pizza called +39 and lavishly destroy some pizza down into my tummy.
Here's the review guys:
http://www.theage.com.au/news/entertainment/epicure/restaurant-review/pizza-espresso-by-nicolini/2009/07/13/1247337074411.html
"Innovation comes in a fine topping of a tangy mash of artichoke hearts, dollops of melted fior di latte and little scrawny strips of crispy pancetta.
A pear, gorgonzola and speck pizza is a good example of a modern approach to marrying sweetness, pungency and saltiness.
There's also a simple prawn and spinach pizza to be recommended for the juiciness of the butterflied prawns.
This is all good but really reaches the heights of greatness with a sticky date pizza that delivers all the flavours of Australia's favourite pudding on a pizza base."
Anyone see the write up on Pizza Expresso in "The Age' the other day?
Got a glowing review
I've had such a wonderful experience with this pizza place that I just had to post about it.
I'm not sure if this place has been mentioned before, but Papa Louis (or Loui's) Pizza and Pasta has been amazing.
I prefer to enjoy my pizza at home when I'm having a chill night and without fault I've ordered pizza from here and gotten it within 25 minutes, fresh and hot.
If you're living around the Doncaster area I would assume this speedy and delicious service would be the same.
Slice Me Nice Pizzeria at Templestowe is the new joint. A Zero 95 competitor indeed.
Pizza at Greenbrook is fantastic...they sell 1000 pizzas /day
Carlucci's Restaurant has great food, Pizza is delicious, pasta is to die for. on top of that I think the have some of the better coffee going around.

There are a number of wonderful pizza eateries in Doncaster & Templestowe, some of which include:
Zero95
Pizza Espresso
Mozza Pizzeria Napoletana
Miss Kneady
Express Pizza Pasta Bar
Carluccis of Templestowe
Anna Molinaro, Property Manager OBrien Real Estate Blackburn
Zero95 for me! Super thin and always great.
Ingrid Ward - Sales Agent Donvale
Pizza expresso ftw and zero95 are the best in the manningham area. Quality 👍👏👌✌
Try Gepettos in Burwood - worth the trip!
The hunt still goes on. Had some average experiences of late with Crust and now Pompeos.
I find Crust don't cook their pizzas long enough and they often arrive soggy, it's happened numerous times that we have given up.
Tried Pompeos the other night and they were overcooked. The ham has the consistency of a tomato paste and the cheese which was on top was overcooked that when eating it fell off the top.
Anybody tried Pizzeronis at Anderson St in Templestowe?
There is one on the corner of Whittens Lane and Doncaster Rd, behind the Chemist Warehouse, not expensive but taste is really nice.
Really? Crust? It's nice and all, but you can't beat the authentic pizza that PIzza Espresso with the fresh chilli on top. How I miss you PIzza Espresso :(
I have discovered a new place called +39 in the Melbourne CBD. Always packed, and of course, fresh chilli on the table.
Hey all, I thought I'd put in my two cents worth (who came up with that saying.!!!).
I would have to agree with Gaga and JVS. I have tried most of the pizza places around Doncaster and Templestowe, but Crust beats them all by far. You have to order the Moroccan Lamb. It's very yum. Anyway, if I was you I'd go and try as many of their pizzas as possible.
By the way, for those of you with kiddies, these pizzas are definately a much healthier option than other pizzas from other stores.
So... "Rouse" is grouse, and "Don's" is good!!! (to tone an ad-phrase!!)
I find it so amazing that people are so passionate about Pizza! It's fantastic. This thread just never seems to die which is great. Since living out in Port Melbourne for over a year now, I still miss Pizza Espresso. There are so many Pizza places out my way, but none compare.
The only places I can recommend in Port Melbourne are:
Don Dino's on Victoria Avenue and Shagy's Pizza on Rouse Street. Both are pretty decent.
My vote still goes to Crust. When you have kids you need to keep the pizza's simple, and I struggle at Espresso to find a nice margherita. Now, if it's just the wife and I then Espresso is great.
And let's face it - there are times you need home delivery!
Crust all the way, have to disagree, pizza espresso charges too much for a pizza that contains two loves and one slice of prosciutto. Love the garnishes on pizza's at crust & they were on a current affair show also rating them as the best tasting & bang for your buck. try Peri peri, it rooooooooooocks!!!
Metropolis is delicious, Pizza Espresso is a real standout though - there's a good reason it's won so many awards - it's very authentic (quite moist, full slice prosciutto hand pitted olives and sliced mozzarella etc so it depends what kind of pizza you're craving). Also, they don't deliver and I think they only take cash. We mix it up between Pizza Espresso, Mangia Bevi and Metropolis. Crust is disgusting and will set you back $40 for 2 large pizzas and you'll be disappointed. Really processed. Mangia Bevi is a really good all rounder and delivery is quick.
Thanks for the head's up BSt, I'll have to give it a try next time in Templestowe area.
Without a doubt Pompeo's in Jackson Court. The Villani brothers and their family have been making pizza there for years - I have been going there irregularly for over 20 years - it's just great and the service is what you'd expect from a family-owned business. They do all the traditional fillings but my favourite is the very strange Thai Chicken pizza which has a hot and spicy sate sauce in place of the tomato-based sauce. But even their Pizza Marguerita is scrumptious.
Well it looks like the arrival of Crust Pizza hasn't affected the performance of Pizza Espresso. I ventured out there last Wednesday, and it was PACKED! And the food is still as good as ever. I cannot find anywhere that compares...and I've been hunting (and packed on a few kg's in the process!)
AJ
Another reason to like Crust - their online booking is great, customising Pizzas has never been easier.
Try the Peking Duck pizza.
Ok pizza fans - to help bring some clarity to this forum I've started up a Local List that maps all of our suggestions.
http://localvoices.realestate.com.au/victoria/forums/best-pizza-in-melbourne---ultimate-list
I don't think so ..Pizza Espresso still looks busy to me when I drive past. I still haven't tried Crust though....
Hey guys,
Does anyone know if Crust Pizza in Macedon Square has had any impact on the business of Pizza Espresso? I sure hope not. I've just moved to Port Melbourne and I really do miss the Pizza at Espresso :(
AJ
Oh, and I used to go to Cinzano in Tunstall Square all the time, but only because it was closest. Quite expensive, but the pizzas were nice and fully topped up. But the last time I ordered, they forgot to put sauce base on the pizza and it tasted HORRIBLE. A cardinal sin that cannot be forgiven....
"Your Pizza & Pasta" in Tunstall Square (took over from Johnny Boys) - I ordered their Delivery Special and added a Gourmet Pizza to the order. The delivery arrived and I got stung an extra delivery charge. So effectively, they charged me delivery for adding the Gourmet pizza, even though they were already coming out?? And the potatos on the Gourmet Vegetarian were hard - not cooked enough! Very bad first experience and never order again. The good news is I tried "Majestic" pizzas on Doncaster Rd - aside from a bit of language barrier over the phone, the pizza were very nice - and cheaper too.
I can't believe there's been all this talk about the best pizza in Doncaster and no-one's mentioned Pompeo's in Jackson Court! It's definitely the best pizza I've ever had, unfortunately I don't live in the area anymore, but I always stop there if I'm passing through, and often take long detours that are well out of the way!
Excellent ! I just bought a Papa Loui pizza as I was coming home from work cos I assumed Crust would be busy tonight, but I can't wait to try their pizza !
Good news for Doncaster/Templestowe/Bulleen residents - Crust is officially open and pizzas were great!

Hey guys,
Why are no Pizza places open on Monday nights? I wanted a tasty Espresso Pizza last night only to find out it was closed. SO ANNOYING! Then I went to another Pizza place in James street, and THAT was closed as well...ggrrrrr.
Anyways, not all is lost. I nabbed a photo of Crust Pizza opening up any day now in Macedon Road:
http://localvoices.realestate.com.au/user/aj/photos/crust-pizza-in-templestowe-7792
It's gotta be opening very very soon as it looks pretty much finished. I really hope this doesn't affect Pizza Espresso at all.
@Kajuky - thanks, pizza early in the morning can't be that bad right :) Also very jealous about the local pizza joint being your wife's great cooking! What sort of Pizza does she cook?
AJ
Nothing wrong with pizza at that time of the day AJ, especially on weekends after a big night.
A new pizza place is also opening on Thompsons Rd, Bulleen, not far from me. One local shop owner told me 3-4 weeks ago the pizza shop did their fit-out inside the day before (...but it's still not open). Apparently $200,000 worth of equipment - one would think they'd want to shift a lot of pizzas, and get the joint open pretty quick!!!
@lala81 will have to check out Pizze e Fishi in Kew cuz I work in the area. Thanks for the tip
Dammit now I feel like eating pizza...is it wrong to eat pizza at 9:37 in the morning?
AJ
I just looked at Crust's menu and found the Shepherds Pie Pizza : Shepherd's Pie
White Cheese base, Slow Cooked Braised Lamb in Red Wine sauce, Potato Puree, garnished with a Parmesan Crust & Parsley
I think I might give that one a miss........
Wow I haven't been to Pizza Espresso in years! Good to see that it is still going strong. Whilst not quite in the Doncaster area, one of my favourite pizza places would have to be Pizze e Fichi on High St, Kew. Their gorgonzola pizza with proscuitto and figs is to die for!
Another favourite is i Carusi on Lygon St, Brunswick East. Check em out! :)
Upper Crust Shepherds Pie ! hmmmmmm not too sure I wanna try that one . Is that an actual shephard's pie or a pizza with mince sauce and mash on top ?
Hurry up Crust Templestowe. I am currently in Crust Kew then driving all the way home to Templestowe. You must try the new Upper Crust Shepherds Pie, amazing. And yes we all deserve free pizza for the great plug for Crust.
hehehehe...you callin me fat DArgy?! :):)
Not yet , be patient AJ its almost Summer gotta watch the calories : )
Hey guys,
Anyone know if Crust has opened in Templestowe yet? I like the rest of you are eagerly awaiting!
AJ
Then there's DiVirgona Take-away Pizza in Blackburn Rd, Syndal.
Pizza cooked with little or no oil, unlike Domino's Pizza who have collected the crude oil from that leaking rig off the North/West Australian coast, and used it to to soak their pizzas!
Nothing like a 10" oily circular stain in the base of the box!!!
Si. xx
Hi everyone. I can't wait for Crust Pizza at Macedon Plaza to open. I've been eagerly waiting for that pizza restaurant to open in our area. I for one know where I'll be getting my pizza's from now on. I've heard on the grapevine that the Crust Pizza restaurant is only about a month or two at the most away from opening. If I hear an official date I'll let you guys know. Yuuuummmmm.!!!!
So true Dargy. There is room for both. Pizza Espresso appear to treat their pizzas more as a dining/restaurant experience, Crust are clearly take away. I do like Crust though and will appreciate not having to drive to Kew.
I guess that's because Pizza espresso is classified a Restaurant and Crust a take away pizza ....let the games begin ! I wonder who will be left standing? I hope this means cheaper prices due to this competition : )
Crust is the only one that is
It will be the only one that home delivers
Ahhhh, the Pizza Wars! Gotta love 'em
I must say that it will be interesting to see how yet another pizza store does at Macedon.
Where, which shop?
Watch out Pizza Espresso because a Crust store is opening at Macedon Square only a few doors down !
$4 for dinner? It's can't that great mottey. Pizza is a delicate beast, you can't ruin it with $4 pizza.
Lucky Coq on Chapel Street have super cheap pizza - $3 for lunch and $4 for dinner (7pm-11pm), Sun to Thurs.
Decent pizza considering the price...

Hey coolstreet,
Crust are opening up EVERYWHERE! I was reading the BRW young rich list on the weekend, and the owner of Crust is in there. Interesting how they started up, with simple ambitions of making a nice healthy pizza. I recommend it for reading.
Still in love with Pizza Espresso BTW :)
I'm hooked!!
AJ
I believe this will only apply to those with facebook profiles but recently managed to stumble upon ‘Crust Doncaster’ and added them as a friend. Yet to be accepted:-(
I guess that confirms further what many on this forum have suspected all along. Crust will be opening a store in our area. I for one can't wait.......
Coolstreet
In the east of Melbourne, my favourite pizza place is Colombo's Pizza House in Whitehorse Rd, Balwyn. Their food is always reliably appetising and the atmosphere is very friendly (you can eat in or take away).
If you are traveling in country Victoria, my favourite place is Jo Joe's in High St, Bendigo. The staff here are so friendly and great with kids. The food is really nice and the location in central Bendigo is lovely.
Hi guys,
A quick heads up, Pizza Espresso is closed until later this week. I tried to make a booking on Friday night, and to my dismay they are closed for two weeks (until July 23 i think). So sad...but oh so can't wait until they open up again!
AJ
Thanks JVS
For those interested in what Pizza Espresso have to offer, here's the menu. (click the View Original image) link to see it full size. Definitely not your typical pizza takeaway - no meatlovers!
http://www.streetadvisor.com.au/user/jvs/photos/pizzaespresso-menu
Even extra virgin olive oil at high temperatures is no good for your health..Dam..can't win
Unless they are fried in extra virgin cold pressed olive oil : ) , not the lard that take away shops fry them in
hehehe....no they are not unfortunately :(
WHAT???
Fries aren't a health food???
Si. xxx
Yeah, I don't mind going out of my way for a good Pizza, and that's why Espresso Pizza is my new fav, it's soooo good.
And to be honest, I don't think some of their pizza's are that bad for you, the one's I have tasted are all pretty light, thin crust and quality meats.
Besides, Pizza is the healthiest fast food option out there, so just embrace the fact that you aren't eating Maccas :)
I think if a product is good enough the customer won't mind going to buy it, plus you burn more calories getting off the couch to pick up yourself than having it home delivered : )
Pizza expresso and Crust rock. It's a shame they don't do home deliveries
I noticed that Metropolis Pizza was mentioned above and I must say that I love these pizza's! Always on time, always hot delivered and we usually get a discount of some sort. By far my favourite pizza place!
I also thought the Panic Pizza one was pretty good at the pines. Good value for money considering what you get - it's either small or large and for a large pizza was like $9 or something from memory. Good for when you want a quick, decent Pizza. Don't go expecting the world, but for the money, you sure leave satisfied!
WOW You're welcome AJ : )
I haven't bought one for a while but you are definitely making me hungry, so I'll be back for more. I think I'll try the Parmigiana one. Every time I drive past it is packed ! I think people these days expect a little more in their food, and don't mind if they pay a little extra for good quality, and Pizza Espresso is definitely different from your average Pizza Restaurant 10/10 !
Guys....I have found the best....of the best....of the best...
DArgy recommended Pizza Espresso in Macedon Road to everyone a while back, and I finally managed to give it a go. All I can say is WOW! Authentic Italian Pizza made the way Pizza should be.
Apparently Pizza Espresso has won all sorts of Pizza awards, and rightly so. I ordered one of the special's, which was a Pizza Parmigiana. It was topped with real imported Italian Prosciutto (BEAUTIFUL) and had a very thin crust. NOT oily either, which in my book, makes a good Pizza. Great environment as well, very friendly.
They also do takeaway, which is great. One thing which I am going to try next time is their desert Pizza's which are apparently very very tasty.
I was so impressed, I took a few pics from the outside with my iPhone (sorry for the dodgy pics)

Thanks DArgy!!
I totally agree coolstreet
Pappa Loui's is a bit synthetic tasting for my liking but not bad considering the prices
I've bought from there lots of times. Not sure if I would call it the best Pizza in the world, but its ok . I'll give it a 7 / 10
STOP you're making me hungry with all this talk on CRUST pizza :)
Gaga, on a serious note please keep us informed as I hate having to make my way to the Kew store to pickup my pizzas
WOW so many people enthusiastic about Pizza, who would have thought :)
Gaga, you have to keep us posted about the location. I did a quick search on the internet to see if I could find some details, but I couldn't dig up anything, so anything you could tell us would be great.
PureKrome - Yes the one in Richmond IS great, I have that one often as well.
Sibuttons1970 - I don't mind giving good product recommendations to others, especially if it means good Pizza for all :) Oh, pizzaadvisor.com.au would go great! Perhaps a new venture for yourself?
AJ
We have a CRUST PIZZA restaurant here in Glen Waverley. I find their pizzas one of the yummiest I have consumed in quite a while. It is great to have pizza that does not leave a dark circular greasy stain on the base of the box. [One thing I find revolting in a pizza!]
Bet you CRUST will be happy for all the free advertising & endorsements on this site!
Who wants to start up a new website called "pizza advisor.com.au?"
Si. xxx
Crust is usually a good place for pizza. There's one down here in richmond. Very nice :)
Crust Pizza in Doncaster/Templestowe? Does anyone know where it will open? I had Crust in Camberwell recently thanks to melbournefan, and it was delish!
In the mean time, I've been having Panic Pizza up at the Pines...tasty!
AJ
Yes, Crust are great - you feel like you are eating healthy even though it's pizza! I'm sure they will be opening many more around Melbourne.
Hey melbournefan, I took your advice and tried crust pizza. WOW!! easily the best pizza I've had hands down... Too bad there isn't a store in the area:-(
Went to Valentia on Doncaster Rd, North Balwyn last night. 2 large for $20 (pick up) - got an Aussie and a Super Special. I think I've found my new regular pizza haunt.
I called ahead enquiring about pick up specials, the guy was very well presented on the phone, told me 15 mins, and what impressed me most when I got there was that the pizzas were actually ready. A lot of places tell you "aaaah ...yeah mate 10-15 minutes", and you give it 20 minutes and they're still not done. I was in and out in 20 seconds, which is how pick-ups are supposed to be.
The pizzas were well topped with FRESH toppings (big-arse prawns are a winner), had soft and tasty bases & crust, and have microwaved well the following day. The olives on the Super Special were extraordinary. After polsihing most of the two off, we whacked the remaining slices into one pizza box, and the empty box had no scraps that had fallen off. I hate it when half the topping falls off, but teh empty box had not a single bit of anything! This is how I like my pizza.
2 for $20 is pretty good too, especially considering the quality.
I'll still try out others as I settle into my new(ish) suburb, but it certainly won't be the last time I visit Valentia. Thumbs up from me. Highly recommended.
Valentia - 315 Doncaster Road, Balwyn North - 9816 3200
PS - If you're after a cheapie, I know it's a bit out of the way but My Mate's pizza at 402 Station Street, Thornbury do a pretty decent job, with 3 large (pick up) for $22.
I had a vegetarian gourmet pizza at Colombus on Whitehorse Rd the other day and it was magnificent !
To be fair AJ, the "large" would probably be somewhere between a large & family at most other places, but it was thin and not well topped.
I've only lived in Bulleen since December, and the mrs who has been here a long time isn't really a pizza nut like me, so it'll be a long and probably only occasional hunt through the local fare.
Others sampled are Big Brother (at Bulleen Plaza) which is cheap, and tasted fine both fresh and reheated, but did some funny things to my guts... and Pizza House (at Chatsworth Quadrant, Templestowe) which was value for money, tasted decent, but wasn't somewhere I'd go out of my way to. But Tera Mia needed to be singled out for a spray!
Hey Kajuku, $35 for two large pizza's? That's almost unheard of these days! Meatlovers I find is very difficult to do well these days because everyone uses cheap meats. I def recommend some of the other places mentioned in this thread Kajuku. Let me know how you go, and thanks for sharing!
AJ
The mrs went to Tera Mia at Bulleen Plaza a couple of weeks ago. Got stung $35 for two large pizzas (OUCH). The Aussie was OK and the meatlovers was very ordinary. Very thin base, used ham where bacon would have been better, and there wasn't a hell of a lot on them. At that price, it's a joke. Will not be going back - will instead try some of the other suggestions on this thread.
I recently tried out Panic Pizza up at the Pines in Templestowe. I wasn't really expecting much, as it looks like they market themselves based on making "quick" pizza, but surprisingly it was actually very good! FYI here are the details:
Panic Pizza
Shop 58 The Pines Shopping Centre
181 Reynolds Rd, Doncaster East, VIC 3109
(03) 9842 7766
donnyresident: I have also been to Metropolis Pizza and loved it. They use good "chunky" ham.
AJ
I recently tried out Metropolis Pizza (at 114-116 James St, Templestowe) and it was great. Much nicer than Pacino's.
well...we actually go to pacinos all the time...lol...
we stick with home delivery and always grab their gourmet pizzas....we love them so i cant really help much...
Never been to Pacino's and never will ...........
Thanks for the heads up donnyresident, this kind of information is priceless for consumers looking for a good feed. I've never liked their pizza much in the first place, but always used to get it because that was where Blockbuster Video was. Now that Blockbuster is gone, I haven't really been back since.
AJ
Had a bad experience at Pacino's Pizza on Friday night.
I walked in to pickup a phone order and a verbal fight had broken out between a customer and the three guys behind the counter. The customer was pissed off that his order had been sitting behind the counter for 30 minutes and that no one had told him. After a few expletives were said by the customer to my surprise all the manager could say was "What does it look like I'm doing here, we're flat out". No apology.
Customer stormed out - came back in 30 seconds and said I want my money back. They threw the $20 back at him, after he left, the staff all had a good laugh.
It gets better - our pizza was disgusting. Olives were off tasting and the prawns had a "chemical" taste.
Will not be going back to Pacino's in a hurry....thanks for providing some alternatives in the forum.
heheheh I know Dargy, I admit it. I know my Pizza tastes are not exactly up there with the best of them. On the flip side, I have very exquisite taste on the seafood side of things, so I figure it makes up for it.
Perhaps Pizza Espresso will change my mind? I might give it a try this weekend.
AJ
AJ, I think Gordon Ransey would have something to say about your sophisticated palette : ) Pizza Hut and Dominos ????.
Pizza Espresso at Macedon Square, is always busy and has been praised by the Age Good Food Guide. Brunelli pizza at high st is pretty good too.
I've recently discovered Crust pizza's. They are incredible, dont feel like you are eating junk food (very think crust) and have traditional or more exotic varieties (smoked salmon and brie).
I think the nearest one to you would be Kew but check their website, they are opening more each month. They are at www.crust.com.au
If you don't mind travelling a bit north, there is a fantastic Pizza Restaurant in Eltham. House Of Salad, Shop 4/ 61 Beard St,Eltham. (off Main Road.) They do Woodfired pizza, pasta, gourmet & gluten free pizza - both eat in or take away. I live in Glen Waverley, and was only passing through on the way to see a theatre show at the Eltham Little Theatre with a friend one night. I am glad I did.
That was almost two years ago, and since then my friend [who lives in Wantirna] and I frequent the joint quite often. I don't want this to sound like a food review but unlike AJ's preferences, the Pizzas aren't greasy!! The only negative side is that they are a wee bit pricey than your average pizza restaurant, but the quality is well worth it!
Bon Appetite!!! Si. xxx
Dare I say Pizza Hut? I know I'm going to get flamed for this one, but I actually prefer Pizza Hut "Cardboard" style Pizza! I also like the Domino's Pizza as well...not the cheese crust though.
AJ
We would love one in Doncaster that would then service all of Doncaster, East Doncaster and Donvale. Pizza Espresso is very popular but I feel its not that "accessible" if you know what I mean. My kids won't eat there as a little too "gourmet". Its great to have the up market pizza but don't forget the kids and takeaway crowd.
