Good suburbs in Melb for a young professional to R&R between contracts?

I'm a young travelling professional (22 years old) looking to call Melb home in between contracts. When I'm away, I want to rent it out. I'm tossing up between getting an apartment in a:

- Student area. Definitely will rent but for cheaper. Any dodgy ones to avoid? e.g. at Syd Uni we recommend to avoid Redfern despite being next to uni. I don't mind students, in fact I stated my age because I'm well within that demographic and still identify with it.
- Yuppie area, e.g. Port Melb.

So pretty much I'm looking for suggestions for areas that are good for buying a first apartment that you wouldn't be in most of the time, so you need to be able to rent out, but that are safe and reasonably priced. Thanks!

Hi, some popular areas would be Carlton, Parkville, North Melbourne, Fitzroy, Collingwood. They are all fairly close or within 10 min cycle to tertiary campuses. Melb Uni is in Parkville, RMIT in city / Carlton and Australian Catholic Uni is in Fitzroy. All are popular with both students & young professionals. For that reason they will come with a higher than average price tag but hopefully you can find something reasonable.
