I am moving to Melbourne in November from Dublin (Ireland) and have a few questions..

1) I have heard the weather isn't great but do you get a summer at all?
2) What is the job situation like in Melbourne? (I am a graduate engineer with some experience)
3) Where is a good area to rent in Melbourne?
Thank you,
Brian

1 Answer

1).Melbourne has four distinct seasons. Winters are mild compared to Europe. It snows on the highlands but not in the city. The skies are generally bright blue in summer and visibility is amazingly clear. I've lived all over the world and one thing I've observed about Melbourne is that the weather can often be variable in one day. It's not such a bad climate really.
2).With a graduate degree you should be able to attain work
3). Rental properties are available in every suburb. Melbourne is a huge sprawling multi-cultural metropolis and expanding fast. Predicted population growth to exceed 7 million by 2020. The subway system is poor and needs urgent thoughtful planning and expansion to cope with this growth. Buses service most areas and trains. Peak hour congestion is a problem. Where to rent? Depends on your situation: single, family, middle aged etc and the type of lifestyle you require and how long you are prepared to commute to work. Areas can be trendy, have snob value, be woodsy, family oriented, hip, nightlife, lay back, city-busy, village atmosphere, park-like, high rise apartments, units, single houses, semi-detached etc same as any other parts of the world. Why don't you rent close to where you have some connections or an inner city apartment, flat etc to start with while you seek employment, get a feel for the layout of the city, get to know people and then make a decision about different suburbs.

Hope that helps....from current Shanghai dweller.
