Newport, VIC 3015

Please don't listen to these biased real estate agents who just want to make commissions, Newport is a good area most of the time, however. I have lived here since 1993 and can say that with the massive influx of new residents that crime, especially amongst the youth, is getting progressively worse. There are young kids loitering around at night near the train station, usually in packs, drinking for the most part. Crime in my area of Newport (west) is getting to be a near every second day thing. don’t get me wrong it’s usually harmless activities such as fireworks, people doing burnouts etc. but it can be annoying especially when people are trying to sleep. It’s generally nice enough during the day though. The council is also doing upgrades on the parks which is a plus, and the new estates they are building on blackshaws look quite nice. Would just recommend doing your research before purchasing 👍

Newport isn't that bad suburb to live. but recently there have been lot of migration and safety has come down a bit of a worry. good for shopping and fishing and retiree like me.... I'm not sure about the good schools though.

People are slowly cottoning in to Newport's charms, but it's still rather a secret. Less expensive and snooty than Williamstown, less yuppy than Yarraville, it's the happy median that's attracting young families like honey. Offers a glorious outdoor lifestyle still within easy reach of the CBD.

Newport is no longer good value, there is a lack of shops and good high schools for me to feel it is worth the cost. The smell from the industry, and pollution and dust from other nearby industries are the big deterrent for me.

Another Preference to live in Melbourne! This place has everything close by including lots of Primary Schools at Newport Gardens & Newport Lakes. It Also has lots of Places to Fish & Ride Bikes as well as lots of Parks & Reserves & is close to heaps of Shops including Altona Gate & Highpoint! Newport also has very good Public Transport options to the city!

Newport is a great little place which is close enough to the CBD but still has a real suburb feel with some big blocks of land to cater for families. The local shops are dingy and always threatening to get a refurb but never do and the recent IGA seems to be floundering. Close to Williamstown and plenty of parks nearby with Newport Lakes being an awesome place for dogs with an off leash area. Neighbourhood has a mix of Lebanese and middle white class families and is really nice and quiet. The property prices in Newport are ridiculous when you compare it to the neighbouring suburb of Altona North and it's the reason we are sadly leaving. It's Yarraville without the cafes but with big yards. it's Williamstown without the restaurants and the uber expensive price tag. A happy little mid way between the two.
PS the childcare has an average wait of 3 years in the Newport area. No joke.

Newport has been kept as a well hidden gem, one part mistaken for Williamstown and other for Altona West is luckily attracting in the past 5 years professionals and young families to it's nest -as the prices are not that high (well, hm , hm for that)... 10 minutes to all the cool spots that Melbourne has to offer, we love it! We used to live in Yarraville (5 years) and didn't find the trucks fun anymore, when opportunity knocked , we bought our home on North rd. Just seeing the view toward the city over the river when you are standing on the North rd-it's a breathtaking, and then ship passes by...well it's nice to know you own a peace of that view!
I love that train is so conveniently connecting City, Williamstown beach and Werribee line. We were pleasantly surprised to find oasis of Newport Lakes and Miniature Railway attraction.
But I find that the shops on the Hall st could get speedier facelift as it for some mysterious reason doesn't even come close to it's peak potential. It could be vibrant and popular caffe packed street , but it's not. Why it isn't so when there is strong market for that- beats me :( But there is Yoga centre, Nosh caffe,Junction hotel got facelift...so it's improving... On the other side of the train there is the Substation(artists market) and toward The Strand there is cool cafe " The Pint of Milk"... All in all not to shabby for a suburb a few minutes from the beach, parks city, shops and public transport :)

Newport is tucked away but once your driving through it you realise just how many houses there are, really long streets, must be 300 homes per street?
you can't beat the the position though, so close to the city, willy beach and yarraville, newport is the claytons of the inner west, experience everything that your surrounds offers but on the cheap.

I lived in Newport for several years and only left a few years ago. I really loved Newport as it was nicer than the outer suburb that I lived in previously but the last few years particularly I got tired of the drinkers club hanging around the park/railway station and the (sometimes) horrible industrial smells. There was a really odd mix of luxury car-driving people who liked to pretend they were actually living in Williamstown and old locals who resented them; the main shopping strip is Mason street and despite the repeated attempts to 'gentrify' the place there's still a hard core of street drinkers who hang around and make trouble.

The weirdest thing is that upmarket snobs from the East move over there and rail against the heavy industry that abounds. I once had a lady knock on my door and try and get me to sign a petition against a new truck depot on Melbourne Road and I explained to her that I thought it was actually a good idea to have a truck depot near the Westgate off-ramp - she nearly punched me in the face! It is very industrial though and the industry was there a LONG time before Newport went upmarket. There were frequent smells from the oil depot down the street; one morning I woke up and the smell of petrol in my house was overpowering and alarming (there had been a spill into the Yarra from the Shell depot). My garden furniture and my air conditioner filter used to get covered with a strange dusty grit I don't see any longer since I moved away.

Having said all that it is very close to the city; 15 minutes peak hour train but don't even bother with the Westgate in peak hour. It's usually really quiet and peaceful. The river and the beach are really close by and there are a lot of parks and bike paths; it is EXPENSIVE however - the proximity to Williamstown has driven prices through the roof in the last five years.

We moved to Newport from Yarraville last year and have not looked back. We love the walks beside the water, the shopping on Douglas Parade and Ferguson Street, the cafés, and the schools. We have great neighbours and wouldn't change a single thing about where we are living now.
I do not understand why people get so stuck-on being Eastside when they really don't know what they are missing on here!

Fantastic access to the city by PT, as well as close to Willy and its fantastic eating.
People are still busting themselves to buy in the East when for the same money they can come over to the West and enjoy a fantastic quality of living with great investment potential.
[then again maybe I shouldn't be saying anything and we can keep this all to ourselves!]

We have lived in Newport for 8 years now. I grew up in Brighton but we couldn't afford to buy around that area, I wanted to be close to the water and not too far from the city. Newport fit the bill and we are so glad we bought here. It is very quick to get into the city (10mins by car) and the public transport is excellent. We enjoy going out to dinner in Yarraville and Williamstown and there are now some great restaurants and cafes in Newport. There are 2 gyms one with a pool and heaps of nice walks. The Newport Lakes is excellent for walks/runs and BBQ's too. It is a quiet suburb and people are friendly and neighbours look out for one another.

Where do I start?Hmm what to do?What to do on a sat morning?Do I duck down to Yarraville for a cheeky latte or Williamtown or maybe southbank or CBD or Port Melbourne. All within a max of 10min.
Do I go over the bridge or do I go along Douglas pde and under the west gate?Life is tough when you live in Newport,absolutely spoilt for choice.Whether its the Gym with an amazing location with its city views or one of the best fishing spots in Victoria,the "Warmies"also mentioned on Coxys Postcards show.Perhaps I may even take my boat out today and launch it from the boat ramp within a few hundred meters from my place and have lunch at the Docklands.
"The Strand' also boasts probably the best view of Melbourne,you could just about reach out and touch it.The students at the Grammar school located on the strand also enjoys that bonus.
Transport is a plenty,the beach is a five min train ride to Williamstown.It gets really annoying when the suburbs only traffic light decides to go red once a year,don't you hate that?I dont know too many suburbs in Melbourne that has no passing traffic.Plenty of good well established schools.
Newport does not have the Toff factor that Williamstown oozes,But I have to admit I can handle that when Im playing tennis down at Liston tennis club on a hot summers night,Location Location.The Hall st Shops will improve in time and the new Safeway and Aldi as well as a new shopping centre in Spotswood can only be cream on the cake.On a serious note a word of advice if you are thinking about moving to this hidden gem invest a little more and target the best pocket of Newport along Douglas pde between Hobson st and through to Yarra st,as much as I hate to admit it the Williamstown end of Newport......

You could live well enough here without owning a car. The frequent buses meander through the streets connecting Newport train station with Yarraville via Altona North & Kingsville/Spotswood. That enables you to get to schools, strip shops, doctors, dentists & Altona Gate Shopping Centre for all your basic needs.
For entertainment, etc., you can easily get to Yarraville for the Sun Cinema, cafes, and shops, etc; or visit Williamstown for a wide variety of eateries, cafes, pubs, market, etc. If you want to get to the beach, the train from Newport station to the beach is only a 5 minutes trip to Williamstown Beach station, or if you prefer pools then the Leisure Centre is on the bus route along Mason St. For cyclists, the bike path along the foreshore is a really nice ride - you have Williamstown & beyond to the east and Altona beach to the west.
As Newport & Williamstown are on a sort of mini-peninsula, we don't get the through-traffic congestion that a lot of other suburbs get. Except for grocery shopping, I rarely use the car. Commuting via rail to the city beats driving any day. I get to read instead of getting frustrated in commuter traffic. If you have to get to the city by car then on a weekend the city is only 15 minutes away.
All in all, to live so close to Melbourne, Newport is a nice place to live!

The best part about Newport is that theres no through traffic going from one suburb to another, the only traffic is people who need to be here coz theylive here, visiting,work need something in the area. Newport has been a sleepy little spot for many years and in the past few years younger ppl have discovered it and its proximity to the city and Williamstown. Willy is very expensive to buy into and shop but Newport gets the benefit of the attractions of Willy and the beaches without the high price tag. Most neighbors are very friendly and watch out for each other. Theres buses going in all directions from the station or Altona Gate, so getting around without a car is no problem.

Close to the city and with easy access to the beach this is a reasonably nicely located area.
There is a large park in the area which makes for a good spot for the kids, take them there and let them run.
Public transport, including the train services the area well so it’s easy to get around without a car.
There is a good sized shopping centre (Altona Gate) close by which lets you get everything you need. There are also plenty of cafes and restaurants in the surrounding areas making for a good spot for a range of people from young professionals to retirees.
