Cooktown is a charming historical town, unspoilt by the urgency of modern life. Its close proximity to nearby reefs, deserted beaches and river systems make it an ideal fishing destination. While it is best known for its endemic wildlife, culture, history, bird watching and infamous barramundi stocks the region is an enchanting place to call home. Real Estate in 2020 is much better than previous years. Most investors are buying to live in the regions unspoilt environment, the region’s growth is unlikely to match the likes of other places or lose its frontier charm in a hurry. In 2020 Cooktown and Cape York were able to shut the door and immediately stop the Wuhan Corona Pandemic from reaching residents and remote communities. This event made Cape York incredibly safe from this health scare. In 2021 Cooktown and the whole of Australia will celebrate 251 years since the arrival of Captain Cook.

"Small town life - quiet and easy to get to know the people"
Friendly town. Peaceful. Lots of community organisations to find an interest you like. Get annoyed if can't park outside shop as usually easy parking. No public transport, no traffic lights, lots of dogs and pets. Three pubs though one lost roof with recent cyclone! Arts and crafts, CWA, fishing ++++. Very near barrier reef. Windy place - keeps monsoon season bearable unlike Cairns with less breeze. Crocodiles so don't swim in ocean but town will have salt water tidal swim pool soon! Has annual events - historic Captain Cook Re-enactment and Discovery Festival, annual races and Ag Show. Arty groups. Sports and Rec groups.

- Crocodiles prevent swimming - tidal pool will solve this!

We spent a week at cook town end of last month ..and do so at the same time of the year every year now for some time. we are in our own caravan so don't need to eat out, but generally do ,just to support the local businesses.
this year for the first time in a long time, I can not recommend any of the places we bought meals at. River Of Gold Hotel was not value for money, neither was capers, we paid $16.00 each for a plate of rocket and 7 over cooked prawns, a total rip off, our friends had a toasted sandwich ,for around 8 .00dollars each and it was better value by far, and the local fish and chip shop in the main street was no better, we used to eat at the RSL and they have closed down, and so have the Bowls club, where the food was great and the service was second to none, what a disappointment it has all been this year, if we do go again will take all our own
tucker with us and I will cook up meals at the caravan park, to delight the taste buds for half the price we paid any where, in and around the town.

Cooktown is in far Nth Qld and is a small settlement that can now be reached via the road and has an airstrip about 10 kms from the town centre. For many years Cooktown was very hard to get to but is now much easier for the tourist and local alike. Glassy hills Lookout offers 360 degree views of the beaches and surrounds and the visitor must see the James Cook Historical Museum. There are also walking tracks with views and wildlife visible. Plenty of guided tours are available around the local environs and accommodation is available in lodges which offer some great accommodation facilities or there is a well appointed travel park in the centre of town. Cooktown property prices can vary with some properties being quite affordable but other can go through the roof.

Why are the barramundi stocks infamous?
