Looking for a home in Five Dock?

"perfect location"

We moved here from Vic and have made Five Dock home. With local shops, cafes, schools and parks all close by, its a winning location.
If you have a furry friend then you are in for a treat, loads of parks and walk ways, friendly community and water for them. Families win too with great parks and playgrounds. The only thing lacking is night life but there is an amazing brewery. Close to Newtwon and Enmore where you can find great food and bars.
All in all love the area!

"Five Dock -it has a ferry to the city and Its getting light rail"

Its going to have light rail soon ! Canada Bay is a great bay run with little beaches, beautiful views of the bay and the river. Get the ferry to the city what a dream. !! The driving access to the city has options to drive via Victoria Road, or the Westlink or Parramatta Road . Yum its has great Italian coffee shops , Check out Sydney Rowing Club it is a Nice club. I grew up in Five Dock- its my happy place. I have been visiting for 60 years as my sister still lives there and she walks her dog every day in a safe friendly dog friendly park. The Schools meet high standards I attended All Hallows and Rosebank College and I have many connections to graduates and teachers from Domremy another excellent school in Five Dock.

Five Dock is great but does not have a ferry and its getting the metro not the light rail. Try to be accurate rather than mislead people with you comments

I think the review more points to Canada Bay which is a great place to live. Abbotsford Ferry stop and the Rowing club there are very accessible from Five Dock which is the main commercial hub of the council.

"Five Dock, A beutiful haven from the hustle and bustle."

Disagree with people who say the flight paths are noisy. Its a great suburb close enough to the city, quiet, and a real community feel. Plenty of trendy cafes, great restaurants and central to everything.

"Five Dock is a great inner west suburb"

Five Dock is a great inner west suburb that is neighbourhood friendly and less than 10kms, 10-15min drive to the CBD (non-peak). It has a vast array of food options (Italian, Japanese, Indian, Thai, and Chinese) available on the main strip. The suburb is a little noisy as it is under the flight path (a trait of the inner west), but the convenience factor of having everything at your finger tips (restaurants, cafes, child care, schools, banks, medical facility, gym, library, supermarket, bus stops, pretty much everything etc) outweighs this. Buses arrive every 5 mins in the morning delivering you to the city in approx 35-45mins - depending which part of town you need to get to. Best of all, Five Dock is close to the Bay Run and Birkenhead Shopping centre which makes the suburb a great lifestyle choice.

Five Dock is undervalued compared to all it's neighbouring suburbs. I expect property prices to rise over the next few following years as the suburb becomes more well known especially when the council is planning to gentrify and make the suburb more vibrant and commercially appealing.

I've been living in Five Dock for the past 3 months and love it!

"The History Of Five Dock"

The suburb is named after a farm that covered the whole of the peninsula west of the city on the southern shore of the Parramatta River between Iron Cove & Hen and Chicken Bay. It was so named because of five rocky inlets, or docks, in the bay. They are no longer all visible since three of them were affected by the construction of the southern approaches on the Gladesville Bridge. The name was perhaps known as early as 1797 and was certainly in use by 1805.

Five Dock Farm was the name given to his 1,500 acre grant of 1806 by Surgeon John Harris. Seven earlier grants had been made in the area, but they had been reverted to the crown by the time Governor King made the grant. Five Dock farm spread over the site of the present-day suburbs of Abbotsford, Drummoyne, Chiswick & Five Dock.

The 1828, Surveyor- General Sir Thomas Mitchell marked out a new line of road, passing through Five Dock Farm, which was to become the Great North Road; part of it retains that name today. When the convict gangs began work, the whole area was covered with trees and bush, but the land was cleared and the road eventually constructed from the junction with Parramatta Road, running north towards the present day – Abbotsford.

In 1836, Dr Harris sold Five Dock land to Samuel Lyons, the leading Sydney auctioneer of the time. He in turn subdivided the land into 30 and 60 acre allotments, allowing for the construction of large residences. Lyons Road, Five Dock commemorates him. Later occupants of the area of Five Dock Farm gave their names to parts of the district. Rodd Point was named after the Rodd family, who built Barnstaple Manor there n 1845. Russell Lea was named after the property of Russell Banton, a pastoral and mining magnate who bought the 60 acre property of C/ Abercrombie. Erina Avenue, a short cul-de-sac near Five Dock Park, was named after a fine residence known as Erina House, owned by an outstanding legal man of his day, Peter Faucett. Born in Dublin, Faucett came to the colony in 1852. He was solicitor-general from 1863 until 1865 and made Erina House his home. The house, which as now been restored, was surrounded by spacious grounds, including a vineyard.

Five Dock retained its rural character longer than neighbouring Drummoyne, as the 1880s land boom concentrated on the areas around bridges and main roads. In 1871 it was incorporated as a municipality and in 1901 was amalgamated with Drummoyne/ During the 1920s the suburb became popular with young couples when further subdivisions enabled them to build attractive brick homes. Trams ran direct to the city. The fifty minutes journey cost four pence. Today the suburb is busy with cars and buses, but the charm of the bay with its access to the Parramatta River has not been totally lost.

"Our choice in 'the city'"

On top of what other posters have said plus the air traffic is noisy with Five Dock being on the flight path. The locals are friendly. Not that much gentrification that I can see. Some streets have a high turnover of tenants in the apartment blocks. If you can get closer to Canada Bay even better. Lots of young families. Has a library, parks, supermarket etc. Bordered by Parramatta Rd & Lyons Rd & lots of schools makes it difficult to get around during peak hours, but that's Sydney. If you like a busy suburban/urban feel it's one of the better choices around that's a quickish commute to the city.

"A nice village in a big city"

Having grown up around the former tram line, Five Dock has a great village atmosphere. It is quickly becoming gentrified with a new cafe/deli opening every other week. Due to the abundance of parks and foreshore walks nearby, this is an area that is very popular with families. However with the average house price around a million dollars, it is becoming increasing affluent in comparison to its working class past.

"Nice inner-west suburb"

Five Dock is a suburb in Inner Western Sydney that lies along Parramatta Rd. It is pretty close to the city and takes only twenty minutes by car to get there. Locals here are spoilt for choice when it comes to amenities such as an excellent gym, golf course, indoor cricket, lazer skirmish and boxing gym. If you like your sports and exercise, Five Dock would have to be the place to live. Being right along Parramatta Rd, you are living on one of the busiest roads on the planet so getting in and out of the area during peak hour is a very tough ride. The local rumour is that many residents go to Burwood train station to catch the train to the city. Many have to park somewhere in Burwood before they catch the train.

"Working Class Style"

Very much a working class area in its early days, Five Dock, or at least parts of it, is enjoying a rebirth of style and elegance, where main roads permit. Some of the older Federation style homes have been beautifully restored, yet the smaller homes which are more tightly packed together still look squashed and boring, especially the ones that have squeezed a carport into the front yard. Originally home to many Italian immigrants, this is still manifested in the abundance of Italian restaurants in the area, more as it gets closer to Leichhardt.
