Thomastown, VIC 3074

Thomastown is a hidden gem. This is city is definitely improving with an influx of young families. It is in close proximity to the CBD. Easy access to ring road. It has its own train station and isn't far from tram stops either. It has a great YMCA. Close to the shopping centers, Northern hospital. Great schools around (St John XXIII Primary School Thomastown East). The neighbourhood used to be a bit rough but is definitely clearing up as real-estate gets more expensive. Has great dining option and cafe around.

I noticed recently that there was a lot of family friendly hooning. It’s all good now because they got arrested and thomastown is back to being the best suburb in the country

A nice suburb to renovate an older style home. Good access to freeways. Pacific Epping and Northern Hospital just up the road. Was traditionally home to many Macedonian and Italian families.

I moved from cranbourne. Initially didnt like much but after being here for a while I started liking it.

Still missing Kmart but epping mall is a of a great convenience.

I've lived here 5 years now. It's pretty nice. It has that worn in look of a well used place. Most people are friendly enough, get a nod or a wave on a walk. There was one creepy white guy who would tailgate and threaten you but he has moved away. Everyone else is pretty friendly or at least neutral and keeps to themselves.

There's lots of conveniences within a few km and the public transport network is relatively decent. Although the loop buses never run on time and will randomly not show up. The other buses are okay and the train station is also okay. it has lots of car park and bike stands.

I wouldn't go walking around at 2am but it feels pretty safe. my neighbours check on me sometimes which is nice since i live alone.

Cons: Sometimes people hoon about but since they added more speedbumps that's slowed down a bit. Hooning isn't really a big deal anyway - better than stabbings and murders. I haven't seen any cars crash since the new traffic lights so that's a relief. Before I had seen a lot, including a kid getting hit.
Sometimes there's a bit of rubbish on the roads, but the street sweeper comes twice a week.

The growling grass frog parkland gets lots of rubbish but as long as you tell the council they get rid of it in a week or so.

People let their dogs harass you. I like dogs, but it's pretty annoying having dogs harass you.

Those are the biggest cons, so all up it is one of the better places i've lived.

I grew up in Thomastown and it's a great place to live and enjoy. It used to be filled with and many respects still is with European migrants from Greece, Italy and Macedonia. And thus had a community feel and very safe. The residents were family orientated and maintained their house holds and gardens beautifully. It was back in the day considered the outer north just like Mernda and Doreen are today. Although many people of my generation remained in Thomastown many moved on to Mill Park or South Morang to build more grand homes. It's still a great place and definitely deserves more recognition in being a suburb where you can live in happily. Close to the freeways, a variety of shops like Pacific Epping, Lalor shops, Thomastown shops, fairly close to the city, Northern Hospital, places of worship and the train station.
I would not pay attention to the overly negative comments on here. They give me troll vibes as many people who want to do well for themselves are targeting places like Thomastown, Lalor and Epping to buy heaps of investment properties for rent or to build townhouses knowing that they will be worth a mint in the near future. A lot of people come on here to attack the suburb to deter good people from buying here so they can mop up at auctions and sales. Honestly if you're looking for a family centered, down to earth community then definitely choose Thomastown to buy and live in.

Thomastown is a great area, theres really good city access via Western ring rd, Dalton Rd, High St. Plenty of cafes and resturants and Pacific epping and Costco 7 minutes away.
The area is pumping with developments as it is a growth area within the middle city ring. It is a property hotspot with the most desired pocket for families being East Thomastown side just off Dalton Rd (due to all the schools, transport, freeway access, childcares etc.

The good:
- Transport is easy to catch
- Nice wide roads
- Easy access to the Ring Road - which means you can easily access the western and eastern suburbs quickly.
- 15 to 20 mins drive to the airport - via the ring road (great for regular air travelers - such as myself)
- Friendly neighbours
- Generally quiet - Most neighbours are elderly and family types.
- Multicultural
- Local gyms nearby
- Shops and major shopping centers within 15 to 20 min drive.
- Plenty of petrol stations
- Close to many local industry
- Close to most fast food chains (if that's your thing)
- Plenty places of worship
- Plenty of schools
- Few mins. drive to RMIT Bundoora campus
- About 15 to 20mins drive to LaTrobe Bundoora campus

The bad:
- Random hooning in some pockets - my area doesn't seem to have any, but I can certainly hear it in the vicinity.
- Many drivers tend to over speed
- Not much of a night life
- Not many good quality cafes
- Not many places to eat other than the big chains.
- Clearly not a trendy and hip suburb - but honest in what it is.
- Some houses look bit old and depressing, need a spruce up and good as gold.

Beautiful suburb, Everything you need in a suburb is there such as Food Stores, small resturants, Pools/ Gyms, Sport ovals and friendly people. Everything you hear is overreacting. Overall Thomastown is friendly neighbourhood where most people know each other!

Wonderful suburb with easy access to CBD (only 16km and still affordable!), airport and shops.

I have been living in Thomastown for 21 years and the change this suburb has gone through is amazing. It is definitely a future gem.

Good value for money, very affordable and close to city, only 15 - 20 mins as it is only abou 16kms from CBD.
Next to good suburbs like preston, bundoora, south morang and new estates.
Don't listen to all the stupid comments about ghetto or scum suburb, those are normal teenagers which every suburb has.
Very quiet and nice location.

This is one of the best suburbs i have lived in since childhood, I have lived in Thomastown for 20 years and have a medium family.
We enjoy the friendly neighbourhood and multicutural people that has called this suburb home. My kids play outside in the front yard and on the streets and I feel safe to let them play without any fear.
There are plenty of take away shops (Mainly Pizza and kababs), there are shopping centres close by, public transport is not a problem, school are plenty hear both Childcare, primary and high school.
I'm sure every suburb has its pros and cons but in terms of being Ghotto or scum as per the below reviews I feel that it is only a minority of people that feel that way and if i was to write reviews about other suburbs then I also have plenty to add to them aswel.
But this is not about competition or anything this is about telling the readers how I and many other residents in the area would rate Thomastown.
If I have lived here for 20 years and my family is safe and sound then I would recommend this suburb to any young couple or family wanting to call this suburb home.

I have lived in thomastown for over 2 years now, and find it to be a very peaceful and quirt location in Melbourne, close to the city and shopping centres and school and public transport.
I'm not sure of all the negative comments about the area but the area I live in I don't see it happening or hearing it, well i'm sure every other suburbs have hoon drivers and teenagers but in terms of the overal suburb i feel it to be a good nest for a small family to grow up.
Night life or Dinning out is not that great as there is not much happening but the next suburb down has a few good spots which is only a 5 km drive, so i'm sure people don't realise that it a peaceful quiet suburb and if your looking for that for a small family why would you want a nightlife there?
Other than that i am all thumbs up for the Thomastown and would recommend it for anyone.

Thomastown is a dangerous place to live. People are very rude and the streets are dirty and vandelised. I think the problem has come from the teenagers. They seem to roam the streets all day and night. We have had our house and cars vandelised and so to have our friends and neighbours in different parts of town. I wouldn't want to live in Thomastown ever again.

I can't really think of any positives. I guess the cable internet was good, it must be the shoes hanging on telephone lines everywhere.

Thomastown is nice, being close to the CBD, Western Ring Road, Melbourne Airport and to the Hume. But there is not that much to do here by way of nightlife (that pub on the western side of Thomastown does not count for much). I have lived here for 6 months and the public transport is good, lots of buses to take you to different destinations such as Northland and Epping and there is also a train station. But hoons are a bit of a problem especially along Dalton Road and on High Street. There are banks and supermarkets in Thomastown but if you want a lot of grocery shopping, you have to go up the road to Epping. The blocks of land are larger than the inner city suburbs and the prices are more affordable here but you really need to have a car to live here.

Thomastown is clean and humble. Western pocket is best (anything on the west of high street). Good sized housing blocks and wide open spaces. The majority of homes were built in the late 70's and early 80's. Most of the original occupants still live there today. This has to say something. Neighbours are friendly bit not too friendly. Just the way it should be.

Thomastown is a safe and established neighbourhood which is located only
17 km's from the City. It has remained a hidden gem amongst
neighbouring jewels (Reservoir, Bundoora, Epping etc...), but not for long. I
have no doubt that property prices in Thomastown will soon sky rocket. They have to. Thomastown has plenty of shops, parks and amenities. With it's diverse culture, it is also great place to raise a family. Thomastown has direct access to the Western Ring road and other major arterials. Thomastown is a great place to work, live and visit. It is a booming business district. From outdoor markets to exclusive boutique stores such as Gainesville furniture, it has it all. As the old saying goes, "Catch you round Thomastown".

Thomastown is a ghetto. A dangerous place to live. Noisy. High crime. Unresponsive police and public officials. Hoon drivers and drug dealing teenagers are all over the place at all hours of the day. You'll face frequent abuse from teenagers and your property is likely to be damaged or stolen when you get home.
Shopkeepers and local traders are rude, unhelpful and will rip you off in a second. Terrible racism towards new 'asian/african' immigrants, predominantly from older 'european' immigrants and thier children. Public transport is unsafe and filthy. Local library has more foreign language books than english. Local sporting facilities are always vandalised and damaged, as a result of local teens. Children's playgrounds and parks have more broken bear bottles and syringes than play equipment.
The Kebab shop used to be the only good thing in Thomastown, but the new owners ruined that too.

Good suburb to live in, Multicultural with people from all walks all walks of life. Pleanty of shops and schools around also good for families
