East Cannington

"Unsafer than what people realise"

I lived for a few short months some years ago and in those months, my husband and I had people jumping over our fences (front and back), leaving their lovely 'gifts', toilet paper and all and we witnessed a large amount of graffiti in the immediate area. Being a long, straight street, hoons just loved having drag races of a Friday/Saturday night. Quite scary, considering we lived near a corner, where there was one of many crossroads!

I've heard things haven't changed much!

Great for

  • Close proximity to Westfield Carousel Shopping Centre

Not great for

  • Feeling unsafe
  • Frequent criminal activities
  • Noise from hoons

That was years ago and it is all changed now. In fact East Cannington is seeing drop in crime rate thanks to increased community involvement in getting to know each other!

I have been living in East Cannington and Queens Park area for 20 years. Ever since my children were in kindy. Now they are independent grown up and I still love living in the area. Sometimes I forgot to close my garage door overnight. I found no missing items nor anyone tried to break so far. Therefore, until now I never been feeling unsafe.

Queens Park

"Up and coming area, close to everything!"

All in all, I love Queens Park. It's mostly quiet, apart from the occasional bogan straggler, that think they own the street.

I must warn though, that if you're particularly pedantic and anal about aircraft noise, then this may not be the suburb for you, hence some of the reviews! I myself, have grown up with a passion for planes, so I often (when I even notice the noise, that is) go outside to see what airline it is. It has become quite a family 'thing' haha. Most of the time though, I don't even notice the planes going over, as we're not as close as most think and the noise is not at all offensive. I would rather that than traffic noise anyday, believe me, having lived on a busy road prior! If you don't mind slight rumbling (that you won't even hear after a while) or are not suffering with terrible nerve problems, then you won't find the aircraft noisy, or worrisome at all!!

The things I love about Queens Park, are its multiculturalism, access to ample transport, its closeness to shopping...in particular Westfield Carousel, its amount of lovely parks and ovals, the Quattro subdivision, its relatively quiet streets.

Great for

  • Nearness to shopping eg. Westfield Carousel
  • Multicultural
  • Close to transport
  • Near the city.. accesible thru Albany highway, Welshpool road, etc

Not great for

  • The occasional, trouble causing bogan neighbour

The comment about traffic being worse than airplane noise is so true. I'd rather hear a plane go over once every few hours than have cars beeping and hooning down the street all day.

Donaldson Street

"Lovely street, with mostly lovely people, except for one."

It would be such a lovely street, if it were not for a particular resident. Her screaming, yelling & way of speech in general, using the most vulgar language I've heard (and I've lived next door to people that swore frequently), drunken partying outside after midnight on a weeknight (so my son has trouble sleeping, which in turn affects his schooling), making everyone else's business her business. My family's and my few years here have been, in part, quite tortuous!! It has got to the point where we sometimes can't even go to the toilet in peace!! At present though, we have nowhere else to go and it would be a real shame to have to move, when we get along with the other neighbours so well!!

Now, all these statements I've made, are in no way an insult, to that particular resident, nor to the street in general! I just want people that are looking at property on Donaldson Street, Queens Park, to know these things go on...not to deter them, just so they can be aware and prepared. My whole family try to be quiet, friendly, understanding people, that get along with everyone.

Apart from that though, it is a lovely, up and coming street and area as a whole, which has a real multicultural feel to it!

Great for

  • Multicultural feel
  • Family atmosphere, mostly
  • Near Transport, major shopping centre (Westfield Carousel)

Not great for

  • That one particular resident, that makes people feel as if they are living under a dictatorship.
  • New homes built too close to existing homes, so a person loses their privacy.
