"Way better than jail!"

Honestly the best place I have lived in. Lots of likeminded people to have a good yarn with outside the bottle shop and plenty of unsecured mailboxes.

"Kinda scary"

Lived on glasgow st in an apartment block. Was the first unit my partner and I had moved into together.
I had my wallet stolen, we were abused by drunks in the street - some days in the morning.
We moved there initially because it was cheap but that isn't even the case for rentals in that area anymore.
Witnessed multiple crimes and very little police presence.
Just a lot of crime and housing commission in the area.

"Good position, shame about the rest of it"

Rubbish placed on the curb that has been there that long there’s grass growing through it.
Shopping trolleys everywhere.
Housing commission rules this suburb.
We just purchased a lovely townhouse in Zillmere, I dislike this area and if I was aware of the bad elements here I would never have bought the property.
The powers that be have tried really hard to create a ghetto here by moving so much social housing in.
And sadly in part they have succeeded.
I doubt that we will stay.
Sad ....

"green"

I bought a brick house that is close to aspley/geebung borders, I made it as break-in safe as I could as I would in any suburb. Recently big widening works are going on around Murphy/Edison roads. Go over the train line to the east and there may be an element of unsafety but the pros outweigh the cons in this suburb. Why people state Taigum in their comments is a puzzle, Zillmere is all about Hypermarket/Chermside Shopping centre [coffee in cafes!!] /2 x hospitals/parks....green....parks/access to to the huge tranport hub on Hamilton/schools of various types [including special needs],vets/ small shops/ Home Makers Centre with everything.......I could go on. Seriously you can be at a tennis court, library or public pool in minutes.
However the crime....it does exist and in fact even Aspley/Carseldine have trouble from occupants of the caravan park and halfway house in the vacinity.
There are many places in our city where walking home from a station after dark is risky but the day to day living in Zillmere is easy for the average worker and families. "Old" Zillmere has some charming wood houses with decent gardens, so with the tunnels and public tranport available, this area is an unrecognised gem and worth considering.

"Never again"

I lived in Zillmere - Glasgow Street - for eight months and feared for my safety from the first week of signing my rental agreement when an intruder in my backyard tried to break in through the back door while my wife was home. Was woken numerous times by police searching units next door, we had kids roaming up and down the driveway at night looking in car windows and trying locks, there was an armed hold up of a nearby restaurant in the time I lived there, and I just never felt at ease. Since moving to another part of Brisbane I have not had a single problem.

"Zillmere location location"

Although Zillmere is i believe still, undiscovered, and needs some work to make it more on trend, the new apartments are great, the train line and easy access to the city and Chermside make it an excellent location. We like living here and think it is a great spot

"Zillmere suburb review"

I have owned a house since 2008. I bought here because it was affordable, close to bus and train systems, 14km to the city and the added bonus of being up the road from Chermside shopping centre.

"needs a lot more cleaning up to happen!!!"

I have lived in Zillmere/Taigum end for over a year. It is a really mixed bag. I don't feel unsafe, but there are so many rough housing commission bogans with litter everywhere, broken furniture and toys on the footpaths, etc mixed in with lovely new apartment and townhouses like my development. The Boondall police work really hard on trying to respond and clean up the area, but I feel like we need twice the amount of cops. There is a lot of hooning. My letter box has been broken into 3 times and items stolen. I have had to lodge it with the police and PoliceLink. :( Around Zillmere road and the station is rife with the mentally ill, bogans littering and scungy people in general. The QLD govt seriously needs to look at this suburb and cleaning it up and making it more safe with less thievery; all these developments are being built but nothing is being down about the scumbags. I don't want to sit in my lovely garden and hear white trash walking down the street screaming obsenities at each other, or worry about locking up my apartment like fort Knox.

HI Kate, You have described the area to a T. Yes the Govt needs to step it up & clean up the area. Handford RD is a dump, you have the TAB that draws unwanted people. Handford shops needs a facelift. Qld rail should have security on the weekend to mend the station.

katet123
katet123

Hi Angie, yes it is a mess and obviously we need tighter laws around policing the streets and littering. Handford road is a disgrace and looks third world. I also report to Deagon Ward filthy dumping and littering on Zillmere road. I shall be moving out of the area shortly.

I have lived here for a year now and really loves it. It's close to chermside mall, taigum shopping centre, carseldine farmer market and sandgate beach is just few minutes drive. It has schools both private and public and train station and buses to the city.

Area is changing very fast (but for the better). Lots of apartments going in but at least they are mostly well built/designed so the area still looks quite nice.
It feels like more people are moving in here. For the price and distance to Chermside Westfield (and the trains), this is a pretty good suburb.

"A hidden treasure - time to share it with those not in the know"

This is a fantastic area often overlooked by homebuyers and investors. I bought here five years ago and the suburb is definitely on the move, many houses are being renovated or replaced & there are lots of new good looking units\townhouses going up which give Zillmere a modern feel.
I have never felt any safety or security issues and my neighbours and other residents are all friendly and polite.
Walking distance to Chermside shopping centre, train lines providing access to the city, beaches and the airport being close by are all major drawcards to this area and I just dont know why it isn't more popular. I believe in the near future it will become a property hotspot in Brisbane for all the above reasons.

There are housing commission homes in every area. And there are normal clean respectful people that use them too.

The area inbetween handford rd, battersby st, church rd & zillmere rd. Kolberg & Jesson st have really bad housing commissiin blocks with alot the worst of the worst coming from there. Watch out for the streets off & including battersby, all the housing commission & drug dealers live around there

sylviag3

I rented in this suburb sixteen months ago and then decided to buy here. In response to the people making comments. I know some people who live in Housing Commission houses who are lovely and really look after the houses like it's their own. There are bad elements (including drug dealers) in nearly every suburb in Brisbane. I used to live in Holland Park and there was Housing Commission there too and similar people to those that live in Zillmere and nearly every other suburb.

"One of the fastest growing, affordable & best suburbs to live in Brisbane"

Hi guys,

I am thinking of buying a unit after experiencing all the positives in this area. My own experience & others feedback who moved in this suburb is plenty to project future potential of the suburb. Zillmere community is changing fast as more families moving either by renting or buying their first home here. Night life is getting better and safer. Many new dwellings (townhouses & units) are getting constructed in the area with other positives like excellent transport, shops, schools and medical, close to airport and CBD. Very close to Chermside Westfield and still affordable to rent / buy. I strongly recommend this suburb to live in or invest before this too becomes unaffordable in near future.

Cheers,
Paul

"Great place to live + Excellent value for money"

We have been living in Zillmere since purchasing in 2010 because of the exceptional value it offered compared with neighboring suburbs. Specifically, we are near the Taigum Centro shops which is generally a quiet pocket with larger blocks of land. Most of the neighbors' are friendly and are either elderly long term residents or young families new to the area.

We were initially concerned about the area being known as a housing commission area and the connotations that comes with it but we have been pleasantly surprised as this is fast changing as many of the poor quality homes have either been renovated or redeveloped for townhouses. In time its old reputation will continue to fade just as those of Geebung, Virginia and Wavell Heights have.

Despite other peoples experiences noted in previous comments on crime & safety in the area, we haven’t experienced or seen this. Every suburb has its share of shady characters and Zillmere is the same as any other - including the type of people you find near a train station on Friday nights. Inevitably crime happens in every suburb and from what I have seen is no worse than Woolloongabba or Carindale where I lived previously.

We enjoy living in Zillmere for all the conveniences nearby including transport links to the Gateway Motorway/Airport and train to the city. We are very happy here and would recommend it to friends.

"Its Ok !!"

I moved to brisbane from the UK and originally chose Zillmere due to the good rental prices and transport links, as well as being very close to Chermside shopping centre and various shopping locations.

Alot of the area is being developed into new units/townhouses and there is a increase of young working couple, like my partner and I, moving to the area and commuting into the city.

However my one flaw with Zillmere is I do not feel safe walking around at night. I admit it isn't all the time, mostly friday nights, there are large gangs of 'kids' hanging around the station and 7/11. I know of people who have been hassled and quite frightened by these people. It personally makes me feel frightened and I hate being confronted with a group people like that. I then have to walk a good 15 minutes home and I personally do not feel safe.

It really is a shame as Zillmere has some fantastic potential and if I didnt feel so unsafe I would not move, but it comes down to me walking my dog twice a day and walking to and from the station daily for work, and I just need to feel a little more safe when doing this.

If however you dont walk, or are a car user, I dont think that some of my issues would effect you.

"A great suburb with a huge future."

Zillmere is a great suburb with a big future. Over the last few years Zillmere really has been going through a transformation. There are now heaps of young people - both blue collar and white collar.
It is really affordable and only 25 minutes on the train to the city means that you are just so close to everything that Brisbane has to offer. Also westfield Chermside is less than 5 minutes away, which has heaps of shopping, restaurant and movies etc.

Zillmere has great parks and trees and lots of green space, which really add to the relaxed feel of the place.

I would recommend Zillmere for anyone looking for a nice, convenient suburb for a reasonable price.

"First impressions are not everything"

I have been in Zillmere for nearly two years now, and I remember my first impression. Beautifully kept green sporting fields, kids walking home from school bus stops, Woolworths being nearby, the Post man was always friendly... things which created a nice sense of community. I noticed that there were a lot of new townhouses and could see that there is some sort of rejuvenation happening for the area. But as a young female professional, I quickly learnt about the pitfalls of Zillmere. I went for a run shortly after moving and a Commodore of 20 something year olds pulled over rashly where I was running and asked for directions. When I said I didn't know, they asked me for money! I was lucky a man entered his front yard near where I was standing, as they drove off. Months on, I was hassled by a young man for "money, smokes and drink" as I walked home from the train station. While I didn't get hurt or anything when I said I had nothing, it was still scary. And just recently, a townhouse near me was broken in to and stuff was stole, and two weeks later my car was broken in to while parked out side my house. It is just such a shame, because Zillmere really is a convenient and appealing suburb. It's near the airport, transport is good, shops are close by, schools are near, and many people are very very lovely. But I'm moving out... I don't feel safe.

I just wanted to add, in the light of optimism, that maybe there is a "side" to Zillmere which is safer. I noticed below some people point to the East being worse off. I live in the streets between Taigum Shopping Centre and the train station... thought I would mention.

benofbrisbane
benofbrisbane

I understand as a young woman you might feel threatened by those things - but the reality is that in a city of over a million people, these things happen everywhere. In the CBD where I work I regularly get asked for money or smokes. As for breakins I think they also happen everywhere too. If you are looking for a place where these things do not happen, I think you will be looking for a long time!!

_kit_
_kit_

Hi Ben, I do agree with you that you may encounter these experiences anywhere. Zillmere is a fringing suburb to the city, so less people around to witness break ins and less people around at night if you have to walk home from the train station. Yes this may happen in any suburb, but according to the cop who I reported my car break in to, there are definitely recurring crimes in certain parts of Zillmere which are significantly higher than in neighbouring fringe suburbs, with car and home break-ins experiencing an increase in reported cases. Perhaps if I move a few streets away from where I am now, I'll be chirping the praises of Zillmere's safety. I do feel bad, but I'm offering my experiences and opinion of Zillmere so that other people can make an informed choice on where to live. I do feel there is a safer side, I'm evidently just not on it.

"I love living here and so do my Kids :O)"

I have lived here since 2004. I dont think the area is any worse than surrounding suburbs really. Taigum Centro, Chermside Westfield, Hypermarket & Aspley Coles all within two minute drive. Train station a 5 minute walk.
I have never had a bad experience at all in the whole time I have lived here. I live on the Aspley side and apart from a busy street I have no complaints. Lots of walkers and joggers are in my immediate area. Lots of families around. I have families opposite me and on either side of me. Have had one drunk lady ONCE and she was from a party over the road. She picked one of my flowers from my garden. Hardly worth putting my house on the market for. All up, I love my house and my area.

"An area on the up."

Over the years there has been a lot of negative publicity on the Zillmere area in general. This has been my gain as I bought a nice townhouse here quite cheaply a couple of years ago. Things are certainly changing and the area is full of new developments changing the demographic from retirees and housing commissions to young professionals and families. It really is close to everything but still quiet.

Despite the reviews posted by some others, I have never felt in danger once and I often walk/jog the streets of the area in the evening/night. I have also never once had an issue with crime of any sort. It does have a lot of renters, but not an exceptional number comparatively to other suburbs. My wife and I want to stay in Zillmere and upgrade to a house as it is so convenient to everything. Neighbours are friendly and children feel safe enough to play in the street. Sounds cliche but it is a common sight in my area.

"Zillmere is a great place to live."

I purchased a house in Zillmere in 2006 and have loved living there. It is close to public transport that includes the train and buses. It is surrounded by large shopping centres such as Chermside, the Hypermarket, Taigum and it also has a brand new medium sized shopping centre on Robinson Road West. It has a number of schools to choose from and is surrounded by parks. There are a number of clubs and restaurants, my favourite is the Aspley Leagues club on Kirby Road, good value. There are a number of gyms only a short drive or bicycle ride away. I have read previous reviews and every suburb has its less desirables and crime. I have found my neighbours to be friendlier and more welcoming than other suburbs I have lived in. I have observed a large number of families purchasing homes and moving to this area over the past few years. It is listed as one of the next boom suburbs and can see that happening now. I highly recommend living in Zillmere.

I have lived in Zillmere for over 20 years and found it to be a great place to live. Chermside, Taigum, Toombul & The Hypermarket are short drives away as is the Entertainment Center and the airport. Also it's a short drive to the beach at Sandgate. There is also a local library and plenty of parks and sporting facilities. Public transport (bus & train) is very good and there is easy access to Nth and Sth Coast highways. "A suburb that's changing for the better"

Zillmere is great for commuting to work in the city. It has excellent bus and train connections. It's also very convenient to Westfield Chermside, a couple of minutes drive away.

The areas near the shops and towards Taigum offer affordable living and can attract a lower-socio economic group, although I have see this change for the better in the five year's I've lived here. Rents have increased a lot here in the past few years so this is changing the demographic. Homes near the Geebung or Aspley border are still affordable and are a nice place to live.

I've never experienced any crime in the time I've lived here.

This person has probably had an unusually bad experience of Zillmere. My guess is they were living on the eastern side of the train station, towards the Taigum area.

Also, as a young female I have used the station for commuting to work and have never felt unsafe (or seen any blood!).

I do not agree. I live on the Taigum side of the railway station and although there is a larger degree of housing commission than surrounding suburbs, I love the area. It is convenient, I have never felt unsafe, and I have nice neighbours and families.

The area does have some crime and each street should be looked upon on a case by case basis, as some streets are less neighbourly with a higher proportion of unkept houses and renters than others.

Overall, my experience is that Zillmere it is an affordable, convenient and friendly place to live on whole with the prospects of growth, improvement in community and housing and a general shift in the demographic underway.

I agree with Ambort. Zillmere is not a nice place to live. It took me just 10 months to want to move out. Finally I was gone by the 20th month. Sold up, cut my losses and left.
There were many calls for Police attendance. Several graffiti attacks. Abusive drunken behaviour in the street. I just never felt safe and relaxed there.
