"Reinvigorated Chippendale"

Noticed that many of the reviews here are a number of years old. Its mid-2016 and the Frasers Broadway/Central Park redevelopment has reinvigorated Chippendale. The development brings many new food options (eg Din Tai Fung, Spice Alley, Silvereye) that add to the established options (eg Brickfields, Ester, LP Quality Meats and many more). The park itself brings needed green space to north east Chippendale, and opens up public access through the old Brewery site, connecting Chippendale with Broadway and UTS. My personal favourite addition is the Woolworths supermarket. As someone without a car, its no longer necessary to hike to Broadway or World Square for groceries. I love Chippendale. So close to Central and so much to offer. In short, take all the positives stated in the older reviews on this site and turn them up a notch or two.

"Village vibe on Sydney's doorstep"

I've lived in Chippendale since late 2009 and have seen it bloom. It's a quiet, trendy little suburb but you'd be hard pressed to buy a house for under $1.1 million as this "gem" is on the up and up. A new wave of boutique cafes and restaurants have opened, and Chippendale Creative (basically a collective of art galleries and creative businesses) have received council support to turn Chippendale into the equivalent of Chelsea in New York, that is an upmarket arts district. Chippendale has a lovely, peaceful vibe with community gardens and ample green space (Victoria Garden's and a bunch of smaller parks). Another good thing about Chippendale is that while it is becoming upmarket, the fact that there is a large student population (Sydney University, UTS, Notre Dame University, Boston University) ensures that there is a wide selection of cheap-eats and a lively pub culture. Also, there are always things to do in and around Chippendale (e.g., book club at the White Rabbit Gallery, life drawing at the Creative Arts Centre). There's no place like Chippendale when it comes to finding a vibrant community and tranquility on Sydney's doorstep.

"My favorite piece of Sydney"

I have lived in the inner west for almost 15 years, and have called Chippendale home for 5. There is no place like it. I love it to bits. There is no other suburb of Sydney that has such a fresh mix of people - students, retired, families, artists, creatives, etc. Like Newtown/Glebe/Surry Hills/Darlinghurst it has everything (food, bars, pubs, etc) minus the pretentious vibe. I could sit and talk about how this is one of the most wonderful places in Sydney to live for hours... I love everything about it. I even love the crime. The constant threat of a break in keeps you on your toes. It feels urban. Its like the 80's all over again. Getting home at 2am? Watch your back. Look mean.

You simply don't get this anywhere else. Surry Hills is where rich kids go to feel like they have hit the ghetto jackpot. Dad just bought a terrace! Let's move in and pay minimal rent, working in a cafe 2 days a week! Chippendale is nothing like that. Dad doesn't pay the rent. We work hard, we play hard. We drink hard. Its quintessentially Australian.

Rent is fair. As long as you are sharing. 3 Bedders go for nothing over 8-900.

Transport is fine. Buses/trains easy as. But who needs em? You can essentially walk anywhere.

Depending on where you are, traffic is pretty good. On my street, traffic stops from 6pm. Since ive started writing this (probably 15min) i haven't heard a single car, yet i could walk to Chinatown in 10 minutes. Am I selling this enough? I should be paid to promote this suburb.

Regent Street and Abercrombie street are busy with traffic, so if you are planning on moving onto these streets, you can essentially void everything ive said about traffic.

Great eatin. Great drinkin. What are you waiting for? Sign that lease.

Infact... Don't sign anything, i don't want my rent to go up.

scobie
scobie Chippendale ? I have lived here since 2008 as a home owner.I'm puzzled at some of the contributors mentioning crime and its good to see that its ranked "Low Crime" because that is true.Frankly, I havent seen ANY crime in all those 6 years through to 2014....NONE whatsoever.
As to this tiny little suburb, its one of the most convenient places anyone could live. Across the road from 3 Universities and Central Station (Sydney University, UTS and Notre Dame), 2 kms from the CBD .Chippendale is so small that anyone in Chippendale can walk to Central Station within minutes. It's hip without being pretentious and people are friendly and genuine. Cutting edge restaurants, cafe's and art galleries.A kind of Sydney version of NYC's Soho.People who live in "Chip "are an exclusive bunch.Face it...there arent many of us as its Sydney's tiniest micro suburb. Many people havent even heard of it or if they have they dont know where it is despite it having been settled in 1816 .I'm not suprised that it is now seen as the new Surrey Hills but I hope it always keeps its feet on the ground and remains good old Chip.As one contributor rightly said, its "quintessentially Australian" .

"CBD extension"

With the former Carlton Brewery transforming in to a $2 billion residential/commercial/park precinct , Sydney CBD has extended it's boundary towards the west. Close to Chinatown, Glebe, Surry Hills and Newtown you are never short of dining option and inner city lifestyle that Sydney is renown for. Forget about a car or parking in the city, just walk everywhere or take a short stroll to Central station and railway square. Thanks for reading and enjoy life in Chippendale.

"Convenient but always be aware at night"

I have lived in the suburb for 2 years now and have loved the convenience of being close to the city but at the same time having the peace and quiet of a normal suburb. In my time here however I have learnt to be extra care in this neighbour especially when it gets dark. Incidences such as violent break-ins and robberies come like storms.... periods of calm before and after. Just a few months back a girl was held at knife point in a security building for the robbers to gain entry into her unit.
As long as you remain watchful and take precautions, Chippendale remains as appealing as ever.

"This is where I call home"

I have been living in Chippendale for many years, I have great friends here and it is a real community with people planting fresh herbs and veges on the curbs. It is a funky and vibrant suburb, and very quite. There is a great mix of students and retirees. You are not going to find a quiter inner city suburb with a such a great location as Chippendale anywhere else in Sydney.
