Reviews of Lae Street, Heidelberg West
"Friendly area. The space and openness is a rare thing these days"
Very friendly people here. Low fences makes for a feeling of friendliness too.
The feeling of openness is a bonus, as so many places are built up and squashed in with units. Here, there are still many large back yards and some large trees. Great for veggie gardens.
Being close to the Creek is great....and if you LIKE shopping or Village Cinema then it's good to be able to walk up to Northland. The Bell St Mall is a strange place and a bit depressing, although the IGA deli's great, as is one of the butchers (for quality - not range).
Eating out? Forget it. Preston Vietnamese restaurants or pricey Heidelberg and Ivanhoe are the go. No cafe lifestyle here.
There a lot of young families moving in and doing up houses, which is great for kids and shows a shift in the neighbourhood. Five other women with young kids in Lae St, Derna St and Wau St and I have even fomed a relaxed playgroup that meets every week.
There's not much through traffic and it's very quiet at night. There is only one problem property in our entire block that plays loud radio on occassion, but that happens everywhere - my mum cops it bad in Brighton. There is occassional hooning (quiet areas attract that), but there is a police and community campaign to stamp it out - don't know how successful it will be though.
Personally, I haven't experienced any crime in the 4 yrs I've been here, but some of my friends nearby have had petrol, phones or tools stolen from cars.
There are more housing commission houses around here than in other suburbs, but around this area (South of Southern Rd) they mostly house good stable families (many African families - I like this).
The buses are convenient, and I've grown to prefer them to trains for commuting as at least I get to sit down and have personal space. It's easy to drive from here in all directions and quick to drive into the city.
