Where are the best suburbs in Melbourne to go trick or treating with kids?

Probably malvern. Safe neighbourhood.
Always used to get them in Murrumbeena
Have also heard good things about Brunswick. Apparently a local group of parents did it really well: they letter-dropped everyone in the area saying they were going trick or treating, but that they knew not everyone was into it, but if you are, to stick a ribbon that they included onto your letterbox. If that's true, good way to get participation from the community!
I hear good things about Fitzroy North, Brighton, Hampton and Highett.
According to some co-workers, Malvern East and Tarneit are good. The latter has an entire house done up (like Xmas, except spooky style) and gets big crowds.
I live in Malvern East and there are so many kids walking around so it's a pretty safe suburb to let your kids go trick or treating in.
Greensborough is a nice quiet area. My kids used to go trick or treating down our street and half the houses would not only have treats ready they'd also decorate their houses for the occasion. Another thing we used to do was drop a note into the mailboxes in the street a few nights before. The notes asked the owners that if they didn't want kids hassling them for sugar-rich snacks to put the letter somewhere we could see from the street. It's a hassle but it also keeps your neighbours happy it's also a reminder for those who want to join in to go shopping.
I'd strongly recommend taking the kids to Wilson Botanic Park in Berwick on Sunday 30/10. It's much safer than roaming the streets. From 3pm-6pm their is a 1km trick or treat trail . Entry is $10 per child (lollies included!). There's live entertainment, a scary playground and a pumpkin carving contest.
Watergardens in Taylors Lakes are holding a free trick or treating event in the town centre on Mon 31/10 2-5:30pm which sounds like fun. With a jumping castle, haunted house, hair decorating, pumpkin carving demos and DJ.
