"Great family suburb"

We purchased a house here after 2 years of looking for a property in the southern suburbs of Perth (we were looking within Melville and South Perth councils).

Both myself and my partner grew up in nearby suburbs so we know the area well. It is a very safe suburb. Many streets are quiet with few cars so children can play on the street. There's great parks such as Kadidjiny Park.

Melville Primary school performs very well. Melville High school has improved greatly over the years and is now a high performing independent public school although doesn't quite compete with Rossmoyne and Applecross. Many of the children in this suburb go to private high schools such as Santa Maria, CBC, Aquanis and Corpus Christi.

We love the large, leafy blocks with a combination of new modern homes and older homes. There are minimal units/villas in this suburb.

It is 20-30 minutes to the city on public transport (either bus then train, or bus all the way, or drive to bull creek and then train) which we both use regularly for work. Yes it would be better to be right on the train line but we think we are close enough.

Our neighbours are mostly elderly (in original character homes) and families. No government housing (that we are aware of!)

Garden city is nearby which is great for shopping. Great cafés/restaurants strips nearby in Ardoss and Fremantle as well as local cafés/restaurants closer by. We are looking forward to the redevelopments of Garden City and Melville Plaza. Melville is also not far from the new Fiona Stanley Hospital but far enough away that we shouldn't have any of the traffic issues that are likely to arise!

The traffic on Canning Hwy near Applecross can be a pain but that's what you get for living reasonably close to the city. All suburbs within easy reach of the city have traffic issues.

In summer, we frequent the river (2 minute drive) and the beach (less than 10minutes to Port or Leighton beaches).

Overall, I would highly recommend Melville suburb or any nearby suburbs.
Pros
  • Central to everything and good public transport
  • Pretty clean tree lined streets

"Just moved to Melville"

Moved here 8 months ago. It is so central to everything.Love the parks, river walks, Garden city near by, and the quiet pretty streets. I feel so safe and all my neighbours are so friendly. I take the bus into Perth every morning. One bus the 106, straight to my office. No changing and just so easy ! Sundays I go to Fremantle (10 mins away) and enjoy the buzz and cafe strip. Then enjoy going home to melville after a lovely day. Life's good !!
P.s . Another thing I love is I am not far from the beach and have fast internet here

"Lovely suburb. Peaceful and safe. Friendly neighbours."

Very happy living here. Safe and friendly. Close to everything. Good public transport and excellent internet access as Telstra exchange is on holman st. Living on Holman st gives me fast internet access at a cheap price and is a very pretty tree lined street.

"Not a big fan of Melville"

Not clean or green, and traffic is a night mare and that is just one of the prices you pay to live in Melville. Another downside of Melville is the price of a property there, and if you want something modern then you will have to look else where. There is not much good about it, unless you want a trendy location, as apparently trendy people love traffic plagued areas.
Pros
  • Good for trendy, traffic loving people
Cons
  • Traffic
  • Noise
  • Pollution

holmanst Sounds like you don't even live in Melville. I disagree with most of what you say. It is such a clean quiet suburb. Too expensive you say. Well that's because it's a lovely place to live , central to everything and lovely tree lined streets. Very safe also. Its worth the extra money.

NickWhish Sounds like you haven't been to Melville. The only way you could say it's polluted is if you moved here from the Alaskan wilderness. What a ridiculous comment.

DaveBlackmore
DaveBlackmore Gotta agree. The streets are getting old. The prices are through the roof for what you get. The drive along canning highway is a nightmare.

I wouldn't move back to this suburb if you paid me.

Better than most but generally speaking the only people. Who can afford this area are the kids of the well off who have their parents help a little. Blocks are big but subdivision is ruining the area and it's fast turning into a high rental area.

Fremantle has been going downhill for a while now and the mayor is trying to stop the joining with Melville. Maybe once they are out of the picture fremantle can develop and become a proper city instead of the nightmare it is today. Then it would be worth living in Melville.

But WA in general develops so slowly that once you buy that's it. Don't expect anything to happen for 30 years.

theboss1
theboss1 Theres a lot of validity to what was said. I have lived in Melville since 1991 and watched it go from the ideal white picket fence suburb to a continual construction site. This is due to the age of the suburb and the cost of houses there, the people that can afford to buy there will not live in one of the old houses they buy on the gigantic block, but demolish it immediately and build which makes sense but is extremely annoying and an inconvenience to all around. On top of that, everyone has a yapping dog and the traffic situation is very true. A trip down Canning hwy after 2:30pm on any given week day will confirm, if you need further proof, go to Garden city or even any of the shopping centres on a saturday. However, we have not been broken into once in well over 20 years.

holmanst Want something modern . Have you seen the changes ? Lots of modern new houses built where old ones were. Lots of new building going on. In my street there are 3 houses being built right now. Yes expensive houses. But the area is getting better and better. Nice quiet safe place to live. As a woman on my won couldn't choose a better suburb to live.

snjezana-susan-sinclairs Everyone has a right to comment. However, once you have lived in Melville or the closer surrounding suburbs you can't live anywhere else. We have trees and lovely old homes amongst new builds. What do people expect...building go up everywhere. Some dumb replies too

"Large suburb with good amenities"

Melville City is a southern suburb of Perth and is only 12 kms from the CBD and is close to Fremantle. The City of Melville area has a population of around 93,000. Melville has every amenity you could need and has medical centres and many allied health professional and is within easy reach of Fremantle Hospital which is large and well equipped. There is a good choice of school with pre primary, primary and secondary state, catholic and private schools. There are also daycare centres and playgroups for the little ones. Being within easy reach of the water, fishing is very popular as are other water sports, there are playing field for most field type sports and a large recreation centre with fully equipped gym, lifestyle classes, and courts for netball, basketball, soccer and AFL. This recreation centre also has an aquatic centre with heated pools learn to swim classes and squad training. Property prices here are rising to keep up with the demand. Shopping centres offer supermarkets, specialty and boutique stores. There are Banks with ATM’s, newsagents, chemists and of course the local hotel for a few cold ales.

"I used to be a North of the River person - no more !!"

I love living in Melville. The we are in a very safe area. Close to parks ,schools and shops (Garden City must be one of the best shopping centres in Perth). There are some great places to eat out in Applecross, Myaree , Bicton, Attadale and Fremantle.
I work in the city and it cost me $3.60 to travel to the CBD ( the bus trip from my house to Bullcreek train station is quick and the Mandurah train line is fast and efficient).
The city of Melville is well run by the local government and there are lots of activities and facilities for us to enjoy. The Melville aquatic centre is fabulous! The Melville Recreation centre is great too, it offers everything from aerobics, step classes, gym, basketball, netball, and touch footy. There is a very large and well equiped library adjacent to the centre as well as the Tennis club.

It's always quite a quick trip by car to the city and is has river views for most of the trip.
During footy season we drive to Subi a lot and it is quite easy to get there from Melville.
If I didn't want to drive I could also catch a bus to Fremantle and then the train to Subiaco.

I love it here South of the River, we spend lots of our weekends walking along the river or picnicking next to the river. I also ride my pushbike along the riverside biketrack nwhich connects Fremantle to the CBD.

Now that I'm here I would never leave.
