"Sad forgotten town"
Majority of workers at power stations no longer have work...its slowly dying as many folk have left for Qld etc...very little new projects on the go main st of Morwell has many empty shops or 2nd hand shops...

No not bitter at all.. I was born and bred in Morwell but left at 21 to get work in Melbourne.
I would not consider buying in Morwell at all. It's rundown and lacks infrastructure.
Anyone moving there need to do a lot of research to determine if there is adequate health care, transport, and schooling.
Too much of a gap between slum housing and new estates.
Power station closed and now APM shedding 300 + jobs due to closing of Vic timber industry.
Many travel to Melb for work but train often is replaced by buses adding 3 hrs to trip daily.
One bank left in Morwell , once they are all gone towns usually fail.
I grew up in the Latrobe Valley, now there is nasty predudice between towns... No cohesion.
It's extremely sad and forgotten by the State and Federal govts.
Could buy a number of houses there but it's a depressing town. I've got friends who hate living there and are looking to move away.
I am considering buying a home in Morwell. Are there areas that you would recommend and others that you not buy?. I think the housing prices are reasonable. I am a quiet person and will not bother anyone. I like the availability of good shopping and the restaurants appear to give variety.

Biggest dump except for minor locations are ok. If you find a good spot, stay there as the losers can’t afford to live there.

Its a very rundown town...some new estates on outer Morwell but central Morwell looking tired and depressed. Crime rate up and rentals are overpriced for what is on offer. Mrdical services such as drs very sparse drs dont stay long. Very very disappointing compared to 20-40yrs ago
Good on you lesley I agree I worked in morwell at mayyvale timber and hardware and coles during the 70s and 80s when it was the hub of the valley.As a teenager I lived in Moe and travelled to morwell to buy my first pair of Levi jeans.Moe and Traralgon weren't any near as busy as Morwell.You shopped in Morwell for your clothing as a teenager.When they opened Midvalley shopping centre in the 80s it took a lot of the business away from the cbd.When I left in 2014 I remember sitting at the morwell train station waiting for the 7.30 am to Flinders Street and swore I saw a tumbleweed blowing down commercial road with a cowboy on horseback chasing it.Hope the revamp will attract some people from the city looking for a quite rural life and especially some entrepreneurs who would take a punt on opening some kind of business venture the locals would back.Maybe morwell needs the Lazarus bros back and the shines.It might just GET MOR---WELL...get it Mor.....Well. Or "better ,if you didn't get the acronym.There is always hope.From an old resident of Moe,Morwell and Traralgon.Go Valley.!!!
"A Town on the move in the right direction."
I just bought a house here, big block, big house, cheap price. I have been visiting Morwell for the past few years. In this time I have witnessed huge improvements in beautification of the main streets, building of new schools and education facilities, new office buildings, people renovating their houses, new estates. The parks and gardens are delightful. Jump on a train to Melbourne if you want it, return to a comfortable country town existence. The city area is getting busier all the time. Certainly not as dead as it used to be. People are upbeat and neighbours are friendly and respectful. People are out walking, running and riding their bikes on the paths. They are enjoying the place. It has its rough, run down areas, but then again, so does South Yarra and Fitzroy. On the whole, most of the place isn't run down, but poorer and less fortunate people have to live somewhere, don't they? Many new families are moving to the area, attracted by the convenient facilities, of which there are plenty. People uncomfortable with Morwell in previous posts are just negative Nancy's who won't be happy, and always have something to complain about, wherever they live. I have not witnessed any crime since I have been here or over the time I have visited. I feel safe here and go walking at night and I don't feel uncomfortable or unsafe.
P.S. I wouldn't have purchased here if I couldn't see potential and a place heading in the right direction. Morwell is a beautiful place.

Quite reasonable comments - we've just bought on the south side and can't wait to move in. Morwell is a work in progress and it's great to see some new shops and cafe opening on Commercial Rd. The house prices are roaring up because outsiders can see the place is improving and comparatively close to Melbourne.

Glad you like it but I grew up here moved to Melbourne for 40 plus yrs and there is an air of depression since Hazelwood closed...I dont live in Morwell nor would I...many commute to Melbourne as employment is scarce and drs commute from Melbourne daily.
You say you've lived in Melbourne for 40 plus yrs, you say you wouldn't live in Morwell, but yet you are saying you have. TBH I don't think you really know what Morwell is like at all, I don't think you have been here, nor do I think you have lived here. You sound like an outsider who is jealous of Morwell's improving reputation and constant improvement.
The increasing property prices are a reflection of houses being snapped up, meaning one thing. People are moving here in droves. If it was so unattractive people would be leaving, but it's the other way around. I think people can see through the negative comments as they don't stack up and have no credibility.

Rishm, the area between the Commercial Rd main shopping area and freeway has some very nice streets which are easy walking distance to the shops and railway station. The houses are gradually being renovated or replaced with new ones - many of them have quite large gardens which people now seek in the Covid-era. They are all going up in value but are still at a discount compared with Traralgon or Warragul.
The area just to the North of the CBD area has beautiful homes, gardens and streetscapes. BTW, I have lived in Morwell for 1 year now, still going strong and haven't experienced anything negative. Negative comments are by insecure or jealous people..

"Morwell living"
Lived here for a year, worked here for 3 so far. When I lived here in a cheap unit, I was harassed, had trash left all over front lawn constantly (not just mine, neighbours too), was always on edge because of all the crackheads screaming down the street at 3am. The final straw was when the servo up the road opened 24/7 and the druggies decided to break into my next door neighbours car, and tried to take pictures of me through my bedroom window (which had a closed curtain).
I also had several people come to the unit and ask for drugs (as apparently the last tenant sold them); and the previous tenant had actually refused to leave and police had to kick him out.
Drove past it the other day to see if the area had improved or not and there were cop cars out the front of it, so I'd say not.
Recent stabbings and drug busts have most of the towns people on edge.
Would avoid if you have kids , are single or just not cut out for ghetto life. The reason I think I had so many incidents with crackheads was because I was living by myself. But as stated previously, the crime rate has only been climbing and I don't see it getting better any time soon.

You lived in the rough area of Morwell. These people will move away when they can't afford Morwell any more. Such a short sighted and insular view from a temporary resident. The crime rate is actually falling.
You have an awesome imagination by the way, recreating life from the Bronx in NYC. I've never seen that kind of action and entertainment around except for in the movies. Maybe stop watching those types of movies and you might enjoy Morwell more.

To all,Morwell is a lovely town,you cant rubbish a town for a few unsavoury people, just remember,Toorak has them too,every town,suburb,city country has them.So stop blaming townships for it. Its the people you can blame,not townships.
Christianl5. Not a mayor here, just telling it like it is. People like to rubbish Morwell who haven't been or lived here. It has a reputation sure but that's a reputation from outsiders who maybe got on to the bash Morwell bandwagon. Come and have a look and experience the town for yourself before investing here. Drive around all the areas and experience them. You will be pleasantly surprised.

Morwell has become a decaying corpse of what was once a nice town. I grew up and lived there until i was 21 and then got my freedom ticket by joining the army in 1985. initially i would return to visit my parents every year or so and after each successive year i could see the town in decline, more and more shops would be closed with plywood covering where windows once had been and graffiti adorning many areas of the town. The death knell of Morwell was well and truly sounded when the State government developed a new found enviromental conscience and decided that coal fired power stations were so mid 20th century! with the privatisation of the power production facilities and their eventual closure the vast majority of Morwells inhabitants who had any form of marketable skills saw the writing on the wall and left for greener pastures. The last time i was in Morwell was in 2018 and the rot had well and truly set in, with rampant unemployment evident and seedy looking characters milling around "mad valley" shopping center. Apparently power generation has been replaced with methamphetamine as the new growth industry in town, bringing with it all that that entails. As for housing being affordable i suggest that that's as a result of the place being a ghetto with no redeemable features in fact i'm surprised that people aren't being offered free housing to move there! All i can say to anyone contemplating moving to Morwell is to avoid it like the plague, it's a racist drug riddled red neck hole that is dying a somewhat unnatural death.
Thanks James for your honest input, its sad when you grown up in a suburb and see its decline due to bad decisions made by governments, extremely sad. I have grown up in Richmond for 30 years and to see the injecting room put here near a primary school and residential area has broken my heart and to see what it has brought into and done to the area leaves me and many residents in despair.
Decaying???? Its far better than 5 years ago. And the residents are upbeat about the future. Brand new schools, tafe, new office buildings, beautification of the central town. Does this mean decaying to you does it?

There are some great things about living in Morwell.
The housing is incredibly cheap and applying for rentals is a much faster process than other towns. If you have access to a car, you can easily spend your free time exploring all that Gippsland has to offer. Your weekend drives will be amazing! All the beautiful sights from the national parks, great places to take pictures, explore with families and just really great country roads with beautiful hills.
However there are some things to consider.
Living in a small town in a rural area means that there is some lack of diversity and although there are lovely people there, more often then not you will come across people who are very culturally intolerant to put it lightly. If you are a p.o.c or someone who really dislikes intolerance in this spectrum you may struggle.
Although nothing personally happened to me while I was living in the town, you are often at a level of heighten awareness and it can be quite draining. Finding yourself always worrying about having doors and cars locked, even when you are home. More than once we experienced random people walking into our yard and came home one day to find someone trying to look through our window. This was the main reason I decided to move. You will hear fighting and will come across police often. My advice would be to look at areas closer to the train station and main shopping centre.
All in all there are good things and bad and there and good people and bad people, like in every other town.

Not everyone is for the cup of tea either. Those types can stay away, they aren't welcome in Morwell. Snobs who suffer from postcode discrimination are the people I am specifically referring to.
"House broke in twice in a year"
I just lived here for a year, my house has been broke in twice. Thanks to my neighbour who called police on the second time. So nothing lost but 4 windows broke the second time.
It's suits people don't have a job/someone can be home all the time. If you r single n have a job, try to avoid .

When I lived in South Yarra my car got broken into and my house got broken into. This hasn't happened in Morwell.

I have lived in Morwell all my life and I've never had an issue, sure there is unscrupulous people around but just like any town I'm sure if you look for them, you'll find them.
There are areas you would not buy in , but if you have a good look around there are certainly nice spots.

This isn't true, unemployment has fallen, and people are moving here for the lifestyle and relatively affordability of housing. Although housing prices are skyrocketing because so many people are moving to Morwell. Are you someone who can't get a loan for a house in Morwell or something and you are bitter about it by trying to pull Morwell down. You have a chip on your shoulder which doesn't reflect the reality in most parts of Morwell at all.
