"Quiet, friendly village feeling ... but only minutes from the city"

We have lived in Pyrmont for over ten years now having moved here from the Shire after our kids left home. We would not want to live anywhere else in Sydney as Pyrmont offers virtually everything we wanted. For example:
• Walk to work, shops and entertainment in the city/Darling Harbour
• Excellent public transport – bus, light rail, ferry, monorail
• Numerous quality restaurants and cafes in Pyrmont itself
• Close to major hospitals and medical facilities
• Easy access to major sporting facilities
• Excellent views and walks around the harbour foreshore
• Good public parks and facilities for families
• Remarkably peaceful in spite being so close to a major city
Most importantly it has emerged from its shipping port origins into a friendly and vibrant inner city suburb but it still has a village feel about it as much of the heritage has been tastefully retained.

Great for

  • Tranquility
  • Ease of access to virtually everything
  • Lot of eating options
  • Near to city

Not great for

  • Property relatively expensive

Sadly the village feel is gone. This review seems quite dated now. Monorail long gone, just for starters. Still great for proximity to town and light rail to Central, but sadly lost that sleepy feel that existed between construction phases.

"LOVE living in Pyrmont"

I’ve been living all around Pyrmont since 2010 and loving it. More restaurants and cafes are opening in recent years. Walking distance to my office in the city.

"Pyrmont living"

Good suburb, lived here for 3 years in Pyrmont & Jacksons Landing.
- Great to have the walks along Jacksons Landing and very pet friendly place, lots of dog owners.
A bit quiet on weekends though is the only drawback I found, unless you are near the PBH, Pyrmont Bridge Hotel.
- if you are outside of Jacksons landing it does get a bit rowdier and more backpackers as other reviews say

The closer you are to Star Casino and Harris street more action happens and has regenerated a lot in recent years

"Construction due to go on for years"

Pyrmont is getting noisier by the day. There are now 3 major building sites drilling through sandstone 6 days a week, to last at least two years, plus tourist buses now lining the streets near the water at Jackson’s Landing. New building site on Harris about to start with yet more horrible drilling and dust for another 2 years and to cap it off, if you live on the water the state government is redeveloping Glebe Island to include a 24 hour concrete factory. It’s a shame the council and state governments won’t understand that the most important thing is health. We’re all going nuts with the way development is handled here. And that’s on top of people looking for parking for The Star and coming back and hooning around at 3 am. At least give us some peace and quiet on Saturdays.

"Noise and more noise"

We moved here (Jackson’s Landing) after years away in Europe and the noise at certain times of the day and night in our terrace one block from the water is horrendous by comparison to our flat in central London. Drunks, street sweepers, private refuse trucks, lunatics in hired Lamborghinis, workmen on their mobiles at 6 am, leaf blowers at 7, jack hammers from the never ending building works, cars just parked outside with the engine running while someone from somewhere else eats their lunch. Brain jarring music from loud parties every weekend. The people next door and behind had to be evicted for all night partying and illegal subletting. We’ve had our huge outdoor plants stolen and front hose stolen while we slept, the guy two doors down was robbed on a Saturday morning while at home. Friends in a penthouse unit were robbed and the so called 24 hour onsite security said the cctv camera was broken. And we’re nowhere near the Star. Honestly if you’re young and deaf it’s great, but if you’re over 35 with work commitments and needing a good night’s sleep, you should avoid the ‘family’ terraces and units on lower floors unless you’ve checked the windows are double glazed. Or move to Paddo, which is where we lived before and where we’re going back to.

"Sydney at its best"

Inner city living at its best. So close to cbd but it has a village feel. Lots of trees and some great parks especially Pyrmont Point park. Being surrounded by water you get awesome views of city and landmarks. 2 supermarkets allow you to shop locally with great little cafes and pubs you can easily stay put on weekends if you want a quite one. Night time Restaurant scene isn't close to Potts Point or Surry Hills yet but is developing. Good mix of young professionals and also noticing alot of young families. Have been in the area for close to 10 years and never had a safety issue. Always have felt safe walking day and night.

"Unsafe"

I've lived in Pyrmont for the past 10 months and have had several horrible experiences. The first involved being mugged on my own street at 7pm whilst walking home from work. The second involved a woman who attempted to snatch my handbag from the front passenger seat of my car which was parked on Union Street in Pyrmont. This also happened in the early evening. Luckily I had locked all doors so I didn't lose any valuables on that occasion. My block of apartments has also had mail stolen from our letterboxes (for identity theft) and our apartment has been broken into.
I believe that Pyrmont is an unsafe area for a number of reasons:
- there are several housing commission blocks in Pyrmont;
- the casino is situated in the heart of Pyrmont (not family friendly and riddled with gambling addicts);
- it is nextdoor to Glebe and the city which both have very high crime rates, especially assaults and robberies;
- it is easily accessible by the public and therefore by criminals;
- it can be noisy and disruptive, especially near the water on the weekend where a lot of drunken hoons often frequent late at night;
- lighting at night time is poor.
Yes, Pyrmont is conveniently located near the city and it offers several nice restaurants and cafes – but I certainly would not trade this for safety and security!

It is unfortunate about your experiences Pollyann, however blaming excellent public transport links for high crime rates? We all know that criminals can't afford cars, but not too sure why they'd bother with public tranort when they can just jack a car and drive into our suburb.

"lighting at night time is poor". That is because the sun has gone to bed and the moon is up.

A casino not family friendly? Who would have thought a licensed premises that precludes under 18's from entering wouldn't be family friendly? I suggest writing a letter to your local member of parliament.

Noisy on the water? That's called Darling Harbour and is full of bars, clubs and restaurants.

I have lived in Pyrmont for 13 years and have never personally experienced crime in Pyrmont. I am aware of robberies in my apartment complex but those instances were generally opportunistic and avoidable (eg resident had left their balcony doors open). I can understand that it is very unsettling when you are the victim of crime, but PollyAnn's experience is not representative of Pyrmont generally.

I never felt unsafe or uncomfortable in my suburb. Having said that, I do not wander the streets late at night and I avoid going near the casino area after 10.30 on a Friday or Saturday night (like any entertainment area in Sydney, you need to be vigilant). It is rare for patrons of The Star and Darling Harbour to venture into the Pyrmont residential areas (other than for expensive and limited parking). New streetlights have also been installed this year (2014) which are very bright and should assist to deter street crime.

As for family-friendly, I would say that Pyrmont is very family friendly and that is evidenced by the increasing number of families moving into the area and waiting lists to get into local daycare centres and schools. You only need to go to Pirrama Park on a weekend to see what a family area Pyrmont is. The main thing which would make families think twice about moving to Pyrmont is the sky-high property prices!

I live in Jacksons Landing and completely disagree that people from the Star dont venture into residential streets. We live on Cadigal Ave (a long way from the Star) in a terrace and every weekend some loud idiot parks in our street from 7 pm so they only pay for 2 hours parking (free from 9 pm) and comes back at 4 am shouting and tossing garbage about. Our neighbours were robbed in broad daylight on Sat morning in late 2017 and just last week someone forced the lock on our patio door - luckily we were home. Pyrmont is great when its just the locals youre reviewing, but frankly its a destination now and really not so pleasant anymore.

"Dream location."

I lived here when I was single and loved the proximity to the city and the convenience of walking to clubs, pubs and restaurants (and there is always a cab at the Star). Now I am married with a young toddler and still live in Pyrmont as it is family friendly and very quiet on the weekends. The parks down by water offer everything you can ask for. If I can find the right townhouse with a little bit of grass/backyard, then we would live in Pyrmont forever. I have to mention also that it used to take me about 75 minutes to get to work (one way) and now it takes me 15 minutes... 2 hours of your life a day back not stuck in traffic!

"Great inner city living"

Located on its own little peninsula and just a stroll to CBD the suburb has a village like character with lots of little cafes / shops. Being surrounded by water on 3 sides you get amazing views just from walking around the streets be it the city skyline, harbour bridge, anzac bridge etc. Contains a good mix of commercial and residential and has a nice mix of modern and historical architecture. Its blessed with some fantastic parks. Walk to CBD, Fish Markets, Darling Harbour etc. All in all a great place to live.

"Near to city - commercial residential place"

Pyrmont is well located near to sydney city. No public transport to pyrmont - so if it rains/cold or u want to get home quicker on a weekday peak hour - good luck. Walking will be your best option as otherwise you will be stuck in traffic for a while. Lot of students around the area in day and in night it feel unsafe to walk around.

I think you were talking about Ultimo. I have been living in Pyrmont for tha past 7 years and love this suburb.

KittyWood

It sounds like Ultimo to me too. As Ultimo is close to UTS and other schools and therefore many students around that area during the daytime. But that is NOT Pyrmont.

People live in Pyrmont are in general professionals, young families or retirees. Many couples downsizing also choose to live in Pyrmont for its convenient with great water views.

It is a great inner city suburb for young professionals as you can walk to work every day with great relaxing environments for after work relaxation; there are fitness clubs, great restaurants (although a bit expensive) and parklands.

"Pyrmont is a vibrant hub close to the CBD of Sydney."

Almost surrounded by the harbour, Pyrmont provides a ideal opportunity for those looking for ultra convenience from their luxury harbourfront property. Visit, Pyrmonts luxury yacht marina, Sydney Wharf Marina. Some of Pyrmonts most popular residential developments over the past 5 years have been, Jacksons landing, Darling Island and Sydney Wharf.

"Cool suburb to live"

Pyrmont is an uber-chic suburb with many residential units and older style terraces. However, many of these terraces are heritage listed and often these are leased out to boutique businesses and restaurants for commercial purposes. Due to its proximity to the city and the water, rental prices and house prices are on the higher end of the scale. Despite this, there is still plenty of demand for housing around this suburb.

Pyrmont is also home to the famous Sydney Fish Market and Star City. There are no trains that service this area. You will be looking at buses, light rail or foot. It is only a fifteen minutes walk from the Star City end of Pyrmont to Queen Victoria Building in the city.
