Looking for a home in Thornbury?

"How much more do you need?"

Reading the previous reviews its hard to add any more that can influence you on visiting or moving here.
One major plus is that you do not need to be car reliant you can get to the high st where all manner of restaurants bars will be happy to take your hard earned!
Great mix of people which shows what the attraction is to the area from live music to a theater and even our own picture house.
Want easy access to those great sports stadiums or City entertainment . Get the train to the Cbd (20 min) and you can jump of at the MCG or marvel stadiums both on the Mernda Line. Bloody excellent!
You have Preston market for a great range of fresh food just a km away and all the usual supermarkets and yes you will need a car to hump it back home.
Take a walk down to Merri creek it goes on for ever.we take the dogs for a walk there. I'm not up on the quality of schools but seem to be plenty around.
Northcote 9 hole golf course is within easy reach .
House prices are on the up and up here . A lot of Californian bungalow about which look great and add to the overall atmosphere of the neighborhood, some owners have gone that bit extra and planted there own garden on the nature strips in front.
I lived in London for 27 years where I was always aware of our safety/security a kind of 6th sense if you like here I can tell you I feel at home with no worries I know all of my neighbors sometimes I forget to lock the car, bugger, its still there in the morning!

"Thornbury"

Great place to rent, rentals are very well priced for what you get. Plenty of cafes, bars. Whole suburb has a bit of a concrete jungle feel to it. I'm sure it will be a long way off, but hopefully they will redevelop Thornbury and Croxton stations and close off the minor road level crossings, which only encourage people to take shortcuts through quiet streets.

"Welcome To Thornbury"

Thornbury is known for the High Street shopping area in Thornbury Village, which serves as the centre of the suburb. A lively environment is created by the presence of restaurants, cafes, bars and the suburb’s rich alternative music scene. Cyclists can also take the Merri Creek Trail and Darebin Creek Trail for beautiful views of nature. Thornbury is 7kms from the Melbourne CBD with various tram routes connect Thornbury to Melbourne CBD and St Kilda.

"Loving Thornbury"

Absolutely loving life in Thornbury. Having moved here from leafy Park Orchards I appreciate being able to stroll 300-400 metres in any direction and end up on a tram which gets me to the city in less than 30min. If that fails, I can jump on a train and go to my office in town (door to door) within 25min.

There are cafes, bars and restaurants of the highest quality all along High Street. There are great parks and bike paths - my favourite being along the Merri Creek. There are good primary schools and an up and coming public school in Northcote High. House renovations - particularly to some of the old Californian Bungalows that are prevalent in the area - makes Thornbury even more attractive.

What I love the most however is the diversity of cultures. The suburb is a mixture of hipster, professionals, young families and older europeans who settled here decades ago.

Loving Thornbury.

"Thornbury, Green, Clean and not at all mean."

Thornbury has become home and really welcomes people from all over Australia. A bit like Morley in WA, this combination of primary schools, shopping districts and excellent public transport options supplies all most people need.
With a friendly disposition, Thornbury is single, couple and multi-cultural friendly. Fast broadband and excellent park areas, round out the appeal. A good shopping life help with the Northlands shop close by.
I've lived in Thornbury for almost 4 years and find my neighbours live a quiet, happy existence. At times High Street has a bit too much traffic and the tram rides can take a while but the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages to being a single person in a very cosmopolitan area. Living in Flinders St offers a great deal of peace and parks.

"Thornbury is the hidden gem of the North"

There is just everything here. Great parks, trendy new restaurants and bars and some very beautiful houses. It is becoming more expensive as the demand increases, but it is still affordable in some parts. We love taking the dogs to Pends parks, which is dog friendly, and there are always families playing on the swings, or singles baking in the sun. A great community feel.

"Trendiest Suburb in the North: Great for families, and great cafe's and restaurants."

We have been living on Thornbury for over a year now and we love it. The people here are very friendly, and we had heard abut "Thornbury Village" before, but when you live here you realise that it actually has that village feel, only with some amazing places to eat and great coffee too. Thornbury is well into its gentrification phase of suburb growth but is much more affordable then Northcote and there are some very pretty streets to consider.

"I dislike this place so much"

I grew up here and we were robbed so many times that I have a crazy fear about being home alone. I am so happy I moved out.

Not sure how long ago you lived here, but property prices have pushed most of these bad apples out of the area. Many of the apartment blocks are being snapped up by developers who are building townhouses for professionals. I think that the Thornbury you used to know and the Thornbury today are very different. It has gentrified in many ways, not free of crime like all suburbs, bot certainly a safe place to live now.

Yep it's definitely changed a lot. Same with most of the North it's nothing like it used to be.

"Great suburb"

I have lived in Thornbury for 7 years and have loved it. Close to transport, cafes, city, parks, bike tracks, restaurants...the list goes on. The pocket between St Georges Road and the Merri Creek is great for families as it has larger blocks, leafy streets and an overall serene feel.

"Great Friendly Suburb"

I have lived here for two years. Thornbury is one of the quieter inner northern suburbs. Green, leafy parks galore. There are plenty of cafes, restaurants and pubs. The cafes serve fantastic coffee and breakfast. Most of the pubs are pretty tame: locals can often be spotted drinking local brew from tap and listening to local live bands. I enjoy that kind of thing. Public transport is amazing. There is a bus, tram or train station on virtually every corner. However I will note that the trams currently aren't good for people with mobility issues or prams because they all contain a flight of narrow, steep stairs. For an inner city suburb, the streets are very safe. However Thornbury is a very expensive suburb to live and rent in. But, if you can afford it, or.... can't afford it but don't mind sharing a house with a whole bunch of other broke hipsters.... then this is the place for you. The best part is that it's so close to virtually any amenity you could desire. Yet it is still very quiet and there's a sense of peace with the locals. Great place for a quiet inner - city lifestyle.

"Excellent Suburb"

Although prices are higher than the average Melbourne suburb, they still are well below what they should be. An incredible suburb. Plenty of schools, plenty of parkland, plenty of childcare places, shopping is served along High St, Station St and Northcote Plaza, Nightlife is perfect ... Hop on the train at Croxton or Thornbury and you are in the CBD in 10 minutes.. Perfect!!

"Conveniently close to the CBD but far enough away!!"

Having lived in the suburb for 12 years I have seen it improve in leaps and bounds. The amount of fabulous cafes and quality shopping that have sprung up over that time is unbelievable. It is a suburb with fairly low density living yet it is only a short distance from the CBD. It has an abundance of parks and reserves which is unique when living in such a large city. It has good local shopping with a good coffee, a quality hairdresser, beatician or medical/dental service just a short distance away. Transport is excellent with services by trams, trains and buses. It has a friendly feel and is great for people of all dynamics - families, singles or professional couples. I have lived in a variety of suburbs but Thornbury is the place I CHOOSE TO BE!!

"Inner city sanctuary"

Thornbury is an inner city haven surrounded by parkland, close to amenities and well serviced by transport. An abundance of schools, shops, a variety of restaraunts and open spaces. It is within easy reach of the city and has nearby Darebin creek, Merri creek and the Yarra providing rough borders. The community is both diverse and friendly.

"Super location with everything close by"

This is a nice spot that has a lot to offer.
Public transport services the area well so you can get around easily and getting into the city is a breeze and quick.
Around the area there are plenty of coffee shops and cafés so you can get out for a nice cup of coffee, or perhaps Sunday brunch without having to go too far afield.
If you want to get out for a night out there are some great places close by.
For the cyclists there are cycling tracks close by and there are some good parks around the area for the runners.
There is a good coverage of shops so you can get everything you need easily in the local area.
The area has a number of schools for people with school age kids.
