"Enjoy living here. (Feb 2020)"

Moved here 2 years ago. Everything is close and convenient.
Footpaths almost everywhere in town, so, easy and safe to walk/run or cycle. Numerous kids playgrounds. Weekly parkrun too. Indoor Jump and Climb for kids. Parkies just down the road for some outdoor climbing, zip-lining, etc.
Only smell the paper mill occasionally. Power plants don't bug me at all.
Monthly farmers' market that is well supported by residents.
Shopping: Good size Bunnings, a number of furniture stores, Coles, Woolworths, Aldi, Officeworks, Spotlight, KMart and lots of parking at these stores. Lots of clothing stores. Spend a night in Melbourne about 4 times a year if we need things we can't order online or activities we can't find here.
Restaurants: Lots, few very good ones. Lots of coffee shops.
Fitness: Various gyms, Tennis courts, Basketball courts and the new swimming pool is currently under construction.
Numerous hair salons and barbers.
Mt Baw Baw, if you are looking for snow in winter and the beach about an hour's drive away. Morwell and Tarra Bulga National Parks less than an hour's drive away. Lovely walks there.
Bowling alley and movies in Morwell - about a 15 minute drive.
All in all very happy to live here. Don't need traffic jams and love the fact that I can see farm life when going for a walk.
Cannot comment on job opportunities or commuting to Melbourne.

"Typical Australian Country Town"

Lived here my whole life. I cannot say its great but its not terrible either.
I've had a particularly hard time starting my life here and it is not the best place to be for youngsters wanting to achieve high (eg. Doctorates, Higher Education). The town has its Pros and has its Cons, I've outlined them below.

Pros include:
- Close to Melbourne
- Essentials are all centrally located
- Easy Highway Access
- People are friendly in the Good Parts of the town
- Only an hour from the beach for families.

Cons include:
- Quite a lot of riff raff for a country town, lots of bogans and troubled teenagers.
- Not very quiet in the evenings, especially on Fridays & Saturdays if you live close to Star Bar or Saloon.
- Heavily polluted from the local power stations and paper mill (the latter has a very distinctive smell that will make you not want to spend time outside).
- The local high school (Traralgon College) is notorious for troubled teenagers and bullying.
- Has a sizeable ghetto, similar to neighbouring Morwell, Moe and Churchill.
- Crime rate can be high at times.

"Better places to live"

If you're a bogan and happy to sit around on the dole, then this is your place.

The people who live here act all high and mighty, someone needs to tell them they live in the country.

If you are single or looking for a job, avoid Gippsland like the plague.

"Everything you want without the traffic"

Traralgon is the hub of Latrobe Valley and is very much a small city in it's own right. There's very little that you go without in Traralgon and the town has a wonderful cafe culture, superb restaurants, great schools and sporting facilities with a substantial hospital. Housing is very affordable and you're still only an hour and 45 minutes from Melbourne CBD.

"Growing regional city, with a small town feel"

Traralgon is a regional city with a large variety of restaurants, cafes, great businesses and excellent sporting facilities.

Even though it has grown substantially over the past few years and now has many National retail brands, it has also retained its small boutique, locally owned businesses.

It is a large regional city, but still has a community feel, where you can walk down the street and see many familiar faces.

I love that it is centrally located - close to Melbourne, beaches and the mountains.

"Great place, Very convinient!"

I've lived in Traralgon for 4 years, and so far its quite good! I must say, it is very convinient and everything you need is just 5 minutes away. Many school opportunities, such as st Paul's, Lavalla and other secondary colleges. The housing costs are fairly reasonable, and you can get nice family homes from $300,000 - $350,000. Many after-school activitie choices, too. The only thing I disklike is the smoky power mines and the smelly paper mills, and the distanse from Traralgon to the City ( 1 hour 45 mins. ) . But overall, Traralgon is a great place to live for families with growing children, and I definetely reccomend anyone who is planning to move to a regional/rural suburb.

Great for

  • Convenience
  • Multiculturalism
  • Living options
  • Affordable, clean and friendly.

Not great for

  • Power mines
  • Paper mills
  • Distance to city
  • Sat night crime rate and violence.

"Beautiful city like town in the country....the best of both worlds!"

When talking about Traralgon's good points where do I begin.....you have everything at your door step: A friendly atmosphere, excellent restaurants and entertainment venues, great schools, great shopping, good employment opportunities, it's within an hour drive to the beach, snow and plenty of places nearby to go on family day trips and picnics! And only 2 hours drive to Melbourne! I've lived in Traralgon on and off for 20 years and have never once been scared for mine or my families safety, I walk my dog late at night in the summer months and feel very safe....there are some areas better than others but in the bad areas unless you go looking for trouble it won't find you! Yes there are busy times when the traffic can become a bit congested but no where near as bad as Melbourne or other big regional towns, I can usually still get home from down the street within 10 minutes at peak times! Life is what you make it and if you want to love where you live then Traralgon is the place to be! As for other peoples reviews: There is a large indoor pool only ten minutes drive down the hwy and I take my daughter to swim lessons at a private swim school only 2 mins drive from my house....it's affordable and the instructor is excellent! Saturday night pub crime....like I said if you go looking for trouble it will find you! No Kerb side collection makes your neighbourhood look much cleaner anyway so that is a good thing and the tip fees to dump waste are minimal! I've never had anyone attempt to steal from me! I've only ever smelt the paper mill when I've driven directly past it and as its out of town you are not likely to drive past it very often. Traralgon is most definitely without hesitation a 5/5 for me :)

Great for

  • Great cafes, restaurants and entertainment venues
  • Great schools
  • Lovely Saturday morning markets
  • Nice distance to city, Gippsland Lakes, Beaches
  • Affordable, clean and friendly.
  • Close to the City, snow and beach
  • And Mountains. Great lifestyle.

"Its unrealistic to have high expectantions for Traralgon."

An over rated place with bad government funding in public areas, schools, libraries and parking. Traralgon has a high crime rate, but the good thing about it is that it is close to other places - so you can get away easily. Traralgon is also full of reckless drivers and has bad traffic control. ISome areas are very badly polluted. You'll like it if you have a good security system, don't drive and like small country towns.

Great for

  • Nice distance to city, Gippsland Lakes, Beaches
  • Close to the City, snow and beach

Not great for

  • Some bad schools
  • Not great job opportunities
  • Have to go to other places (Melbourne and surrounding towns) for some things and movie theatres.
  • No large indoor pool.
  • Sat night crime rate and violence.
  • Areas and have to pay for green waste at tip?
  • No kerb side collections like in other

"My dream location to live - but no to pets allowed in the rental arena !?!"

I'm moving to Traralgon in the first week of July 2012 and I have a 17 year old cat however I am struggling to find a rental accommodation to accommodate us. Renters who abuse properties with loud parties; property damage and such are fine, however Lord forbid you live a quiet life and have a pet and a fully house trained sinced a kitten Octaginarian Feline. This I seriously can't understand.

Great for

  • Lovely country atmosphere
  • Friendly, open, helpful locals
  • A location where you can really "breath"
  • Affordable, clean and friendly.
  • Nice distance to city, Gippsland Lakes, Beaches
  • And Mountains. Great lifestyle.
  • Close to the City, snow and beach

Not great for

  • Rental properties who ban pets !!

"Affordable, good lifestyle with plenty of disposable income, not far from city, Gippsland Lakes and Mountains"

I have lived in Melbourne , regional centres in Nsw and Victoria and was amazed how affordable Traralgon is to live in. We have bought a lovely house here at a great price. Traralgon is close enough to Melbourne but far enough to not be caught up in the city madness. It is clean, vibrant, plenty of choices of schools for kids, some great cafe's and restaurants. Vline has a great service in and out of the city by rail or one can drive there in 1.5-2 hours depending on part of city you need to go to. The magnificent Gippsland Lakes is 1.5 hours the other direction, Beaches 40 mins away and the Mountains are easily accessible. There is plenty of work in the area with the unemployment rate of 3.9% (i looked that one up). It is a friendly and warm town and we have decided we would now like to settle in one area and for affordability, access to things we love doing both in the great outdoors and in the city Traralgon allows us to do all this. My in laws and some friends have loved their visits down to see us that they have moved here now also from Bayside in Melbourne. No more traffic jams getting to work. In Traralgon life is about living life to its fullest. If you chose to move here you will not regret it. We haven't.

Great for

  • Affordable, clean and friendly.
  • Nice distance to city, Gippsland Lakes, Beaches
  • And Mountains. Great lifestyle.

Hi We are thinking of moving from Tamworth NSW down to your part of the world ...we are not sure which town to settle in...we are thinking of Traralgon, Morwell, Moe, Churchill etc...which towns are good and which are bad?..or what streets should I stay clear of?..... also I would like a good high school for my son to go to.... we might be selling our house up this way and want to buy something down there as I cant believe how cheap houses are.... but we were thinking of renting for 6 mths then buy something but we have pets...3 small dogs and a cat and cant find anything down that way that will let you rent with pets....

V line have a great service? You have got to be kidding! Traralgon has had huge issues with lack of public transport for several years now. There is also lots of unemployment, high crime rate and the pollution is quite bad with the paper mill smell some times unbearable

"A bustling town - something for everyone and a great place to live."

Traralgon is great for all people - singles, couples, families and retirees. Great schools, shopping, entertainment, parks and business opportunities and lots of different areas to live. I grew up here, moved away for 8 years, but knew it was where I wanted to come back to start my family. As for being friendly and neighbourly - you get back what you put in!

Sorry you seem to have had a bad experience in your time in Traralgon. We have found the opposite it would seem. Housing is very reasonably priced here, and not sure why you think Traralgon has traffice congestion. After all the places we have lived in we laugh at the lack of traffic congestion and can not believe how lucky we have been to find this town. We felt so lucky we have stayed put. Wish you all the best for your next move and hope you are as happy as we are with your new home.

You sound like a (un) real (istic) estate agent. The comment about no traffic congestion gave you away. For a country town to have parking and congestion as bad as a major city is evidence of the lack of funding small country towns attract.

Cheers
Cheers

Bod, I am not a real estate agent, realistic or unrealistic. I just appreciate living in such an affordable area where it takes me 4 minutes to drive to work, and we can afford to buy a house and have money left over to buy a holiday home as well. I lived in Melbourne for some years and in New South Wales and there is no way we would have what we have not living in either NSW or Melbourne. You clearly do not like the area and that is your experience. Hopefully where you moved to is much better for you and you can write some positive feedback on your new town. All the Best.
