Reviews of West Hobart, TAS
"Average"
West Hobart is often spoken about as one of Hobart’s more desirable suburbs, but from the perspective of someone who values practicality, safety, and genuine lifestyle quality — it’s falling short.
Yes, it has heritage homes and leafy streets, but much of the housing stock is ageing and overpriced for what’s actually on offer. Many properties require significant maintenance, and the costs of upkeep are rarely reflected in the market value. You’re often paying premium prices for outdated infrastructure.
Socially, the suburb has shifted. While once known for its community feel and artistic flair, there’s now a growing divide between long-term residents and newer arrivals. This change has created a kind of tension — a sense that the suburb is losing its identity without gaining anything meaningful in return.
More concerning are issues around safety and cleanliness. Certain streets are noticeably neglected, with rising reports of petty crime and public disturbances that make parts of West Hobart feel less safe than they used to. Public spaces and parks aren’t maintained to the standard you’d expect for the price tag of living here.
"Maybe once a livable part of this side of the river, not anymore"
After a lifetime in Tassie, its all down hill for this side of the river, congestion and traffic is borderline insane at all hours. Wait until their is a stadium, you won't be able to move.
"Cramped, Noisy, and Losing Its Appeal"
West Hobart might sound appealing on paper, but living here tells a different story. The streets are narrow and constantly jammed with cars—most of which seem to be trying to avoid traffic in the city. Parking is near impossible, especially around school zones and local shops. Add to that the ongoing noise, steep blocks, and lack of usable green space, and you’ve got a suburb that feels more claustrophobic than comfortable.
"My favourite suburb"
West Hobart is adjacent to the CBD and juts high into the foothills of Mount Wellington. Stunningly beautiful, with the houses high on the hills having incredible views!
A large range of housing types ranging from early 1900s cottages, to modern mansions.
Charming parks and large areas of bushland including popular Knocklofty reserve.
Wedged between north hobart and the CBD: all the services you could possibly need are only a fewminutes away.
The only down side is that I can't afford to buy there.

"Bush like area but narrow streets"
Nice bush area but the streets can be narrow and hard to navigate and alot of the streets are either one way or none existant. trying to get google maps to navigate you anywhere in west hobart is a nightmare! Most houses closer to the bush have long steep driveways and some roads are even muddy dirt making it even more diffucult to commute.

"Two suburbs in One"
West Hobart is a leafy, quiet suburb. It spreads from the restaurant strip of North Hobart, up to the foothills of Knocklofty. At the city end it borders the CBD and wanders up Forest Road. So if you want views, city access, or access to restaurants and cinemas, or all of the above - it could be the suburb for you.
Great for
- Access to restaurant strip
- Terrific grocer and butcher
- Choice of cafes
- Close To The City
- Life Style
- Safe Friendly Community
- Walkability
Not great for
- House prices (at least for Tasmania)

"The very best of Hobart"
Street after street of houses filled with character add up to a suburb of real beauty.
The views of the city and the Derwent are sublime and all within 2k's of the CBD.
A stroll to the Hill St Market finds you in another time, a time of friendly service, gorgeous produce and a place clearly at the heart of a real community.
Knocklofty Reserve rises above West Hobart as a constant reminder of the possibilities and wonder of the wild.
We love living here.

"Forest Road, West Hobart"
Many houses in Forest Rd have exceptional views and only 5 minutes from the CBD.
You will find quite a lot of professionals living in Forest Rd because its close to the CBD.
Nature~Knocklofty reserve (at the end of Forest Rd) for bush walking or walking the dog.
Best of both worlds~close to the city but close to nature as well. I think this makes West Hobart pretty unique.

"Knocklofty Tce - vibrant community spirit with nature at doorstep"
A suburb that cares, West Hobart is the suburb where you still hear kids walking home from school at 3pm. There is still the traditional corner shops, doctor's surgeries, chemist and butcher - not to mention cafes, Pizza restaurant, independent video store and art galleries that are all within walking distance. Not to mention the fantastic Knocklofty Reserve which West Hobart backs on to with frog ponds and forested walking tracks that are frequented by locals. West Hobart is a one stop shop suburb which has a communtiy where houses are homes not real estate.

"Friendly Local Atmosphere"
Where to start...
As a suburb, West Hobart has everything to offer including parks, cafes, restaurants, supermarkets, medical facilites, chemist, GPO, video store, physio, butcher, transport, art gallery, primary & secondary schools. Yet a 5 minute drive to the heart of Hobart.
All of this comes with a safe local friendly atmosphere. The vibe in West Hobart is certainly something special, whether it's having breafast at the "Lansdowne Cafe" or Shopping for fresh food and veg at "Hill St Grocer" your bound to bump into a friendly face.
Lansdowne Crescent is the Chapple St of West Hobart considering it is the home "Video West", Hill St Express", "The Lansdowne Cafe" (TLC), and Lansdowne Physiotherapy
Although is it part of a Metropolitan district, you can still enjoy the "Knocklofty Reserve", "Valley Street Reserve" and the kids will love the famous " The Train Park (Cladew Park)"

"The heart of Hobart living"
Everything is within 5 minutes drive - city centre, doctors/chemist, primary and high schools, GPO, resturants, Knocklofty reserve, supermarkets, nightlife etc - but it's still like living in the country. Great for walking and has very friendly people in the area. West Hobart is a wonderful community. Our family loves it and wouldn't live anywhere else.

"Easy access to everything"
West Hobart has easy access to the city centre and North Hobart restaurants/nightlife. You keep fit walking up the hills on your way home, or it is a quick and cheap taxi ride. Lovely older style homes with a lot of views, as well as quiet neighbourhoods with friendly neighbours. The Hill Street Grocer is an institution in the suburb, and the best place in Hobart for gourmet deli items, fresh fruit and vegies.

Again, I think a 1 star review is very harsh. You have left seven 1 star reviews and one 5 star review for Rosetta of all places.
