"So underrated...I love it!"

Been living in Maribyrnong for the past 2 years, moved from Box Hill. Maribyrnong I find is so underrated which is great for the people that live in this wonderful suburb. You literally have everything at your door step! The only thing that's lacking which isn't too bad, is a train station, however with the tram line on Raleigh Rd, Ascot Vale and Moonee Ponds train stations close by the city is easily accessible. Prices to buy a home or apartment here is still surprisingly quite reasonable even only being 8km away from the city. I believe in the next few years this will become very, very different! And with future development on the old army barracks, you will see this area boom. Food in Maribyrnong is kinda lacking, but there still is a few hidden jems here you just got to have a little dig around and you'll find something to your taste. Oh and don't forget High Point is just around the corner ;-)

"HORRIBLE"

Maribyrnong is a great suburb, really like it. BUT Maribyrnong college is a horrible school, if you're moving to maribyrnong never go to that school, one of the worst schools. Make sure to push your child's grades up if they aren't and then try out selective schools such as Suzanne Cory which is in Werribee and only about 10-20km away or Melbourne High which is in the city, or do the ace program for schools like Buckley Park College or Strathmore College. BUT NEVER EVER GO TO MARIBYRNONG COLLEGE, I REPEAT DON'T GO TO THAT HORRIBLE SCHOOL.

"7km from the city and surrounded by 30 acres of open parklands... plus a golf course - JUST PERFECT"

I moved from Footscray to the Edgewater Estate, Maribyrnong 5 years ago to escape the increased traffic levels and pollution in Footscray. I have not been disappointed.

Maribyrnong is located 7km north-west of the CBD. The Maribyrnong River flows through the suburb, with suburbs Ascot Vale and Essendon on the opposite side the river. It is a green suburb with access to 6 large parks, including Maribyrnong Park, Coulston Gardens, Pipemakers Park, Henry Turner Reserve, Robert Barrett Reserve and Footscray Park - these open spaces make up approximately 30 acres of open space. There are bike/runnings paths along the river connecting all the parklands.

Grocery shopping can be done at either of Edgewater Estate - Aldi Supermarket or Highpoint Shopping Center -Coles. If you like market shopping, then Footscray Market is a 5 min drive or 15 min tram ride away.

Edgewater Estate boasts its own shopping strip with cafes, a butcher, organic produce, a bakery and Lazy Moe's Restaurant. If you follow Cumberland Drive through the Estate down to the bottom you will meet the Maribyrnong river and find two new restaurants. One owned by a lovely polish man who makes the best food and also a pancake place that I am yet to eat at.

The surrounding private schools (eg Essendon) service the area with private buses to collect/drop off children.

All in all, it is a suburb that caters to a quality lifestyle with excellent services. I couldn’t be happier.

JudyW do you mean private buses to collect and drop off children to Essendon school? Please give me the details how to arrange it. Does it take you to Essendon station? Your information is much appreciated.

"10kms from the city and a city within itself"

Maribyrnong is close to Highpoint shopping centre which is currently being renovated and extended. This should increase overall property value once complete. The area is tranquil and quiet. It is within close proximity of the city and the Maribyrnong river. Tram access is located on Maribyrnong Road which takes you into the centre of the CBD. There are heaps of parks and walking paths as well as schools around the area. It really is a small city within a city, you have everything you need right at your doorstep.

"Maribyrnong - "I hear a ringtail possum'"

The greatest attraction for Maribyrnong is the river. It snakes through the suburb and has beautiful parks surrounding it and great bike and walking tracks. There are lots of buses and Trams No 57 and 82 run via Maribyrnong Road however, because there is no train, it can take up to 50 minutes to get to the city centre by tram - frustrating when the suburb is 7-9km away from the city.
I have lived in the area for 14 years and have seen the prices go from strength to strength. It is definitely a place that is improving in price. The new defence site redevelopment will totally change the face of the suburb (for the better) and hopefully this will bring with it better infrastructure and some strategies for reducing traffic (Maribyrnong Road can get very busy with two tram routes and traffic from Highpoint).
There are plenty of gyms in the area and of course Highpoint. The suburb lacks a restaurant strip but there is good dining at Il Palazzo. Anglers Tavern is a nice place to hang out and relax by the river, especially during the summer.
There is no public primary school in the suburb but there is one nearby in Footscray.
Students (Maribyrnong is home to Victoria University student village), single people and families live here so it has a nice mix.
The only downside is there isn't really a shopping street or centre to Maribyrnong because Highpoint is the focus.

"Conveniently located"

Maribyrnong is the home of the scenic Maribyrnong river where families enjoy walking, jogging, cycling, kayaking and canoeying. One direction along the river takes you to Brimbank Park through Essendon, Avondale Heights and Sunshine North. The other direction takes you into Melbourne CBD through Footscray Park and Dockland.

Macedon St is arguably the best street in Maribyrnong, with a magnificient streetscape. It's a quiet tree lined street some 300m from Highpoint Shopping Centre, Aquatic Centre and the Maribyrnong river.

Have your retail theraphy at Highpoint Shopping centre (Maribyrnong). With shopping comes great dining, and my favourite is Nandos.

Maribyrnong has so much to offer and yet it is only 7Km from Melbourne CBD.

Maribyrnong already boasts many multi-million dollars properties. Watch this
suburb, as it keeps on growing and growing.

"Loads to offer and way under-rated!"

Although Maribyrnong is not actually a part of Moonee Valley, its architectural style, affordability and capitol growth are more influenced by the goings on in Moonee Valley than its own neighbouring suburbs in the City of Maribyrnong. Geographically, it borders Avondale Heights, Essendon West, Aberfeldie, Moonee Ponds and Ascot Vale – which it shares its postcode with. The suburb itself has been transformed over the last decade or so with some of Melbourne’s most significant inner-urban redevelopment projects happening within its borders including Waterford Green and the refurbished ordinance buildings, the spectacular townhouse views from Horizon Drive, the superb Riverbank Estate and the sought-after Edgewater Estate with its unique waterfront lifestyle – plus some delightful established pockets ranging from cute Californian Bungalows around the Mitchell Street area to the multi-million dollar homes along The Esplanade. With so much river frontage, Maribyrnong obviously boasts a huge range of recreational amenities including Pipemakers Park and Coulson Gardens along Chifley Drive, plus the popular Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre and of course Highpoint Shopping Centre and cinemas, plus a number of local schools, bus services and tram routes to Moonee Ponds, Footscray and the CBD.

"Maribyrnong - Convenient Suburb"

Maribyrnong contains Highpoint Shopping Centre, one of Australia's largest shopping centres and 2nd largest in Victoria .The suburb is also home to the Anglers Tavern Hotel, located on the banks of the Maribyrnong River. The hotel is a popular night spot and eatery for locals and Melbournians alike.

No trains run through the suburb. The nearest train stations are Ascot Vale Station on the Craigieburn line or Footscray Station West Footscray Station on the Werribee and Sydenham and Williamstown lines are located nearby.

The Route 57 tram provides public transport from Flinders Street Station in the city to West Maribyrnong running through Ascot Vale, Flemington and North Melbourne.

The Route 82 tram provides public transport from Moonee Ponds (Ascot Vale Road / Puckle Street) to Footscray (Leeds Street / Irving Street). It is one of only three Melbourne tram routes which does not travel through the Melbourne CBD.

There are also several bus routes that run through Maribyrnong, many terminating at Highpoint Shopping Centre. Buses run to Caroline Springs, Avondale Heights, East Keilor and Essendon. The introduction of Melbourne's first orbital bus line, the SmartBus, runs just north of Maribyrnong along Buckley Street in Essendon

Despite being an inner city suburb, like many western suburbs, there are significant areas of land within Maribyrnong that have yet been developed. Mostly owned by the Federal Government for the Department of Defence, the land is now seen as a prime opportunity for housing developments. The most notable development most recently under construction is Edgewater, located near Highpoint on Gordon Street which takes in spectacular city views.

The largest development to be announced by the State Government is the 128 hectare Defence site bound by the Maribyrnong river. 3,000 new homes are expected to be built, along with open parkland, shops and the inclusion of many decade old defence buildings in keeping with heritage. Construction is expected to commence is 2012 with the project taking 10 – 15 years to be fully completed

The suburb adjoins the Maribyrnong River Trail which is used by commuting and recreational cyclists along the Maribyrnong River. There are also numerous bike and walking trails which link the suburb to various other suburbs and take in some of the western suburbs greatest natural beauties, such as Pipemakers Park, Afton Street Conservation Park and Footscray Park.

"Close to nice parks and river, shops, restaurants, gyms, CBD"

Maribyrnong is an inner Melbourne (7km-9km depending on which part of the suburb) riverside suburb with nice parks and views. You can see people jogging or cycling along the Maribyrnong river, fishing and kayaking in the river, or enjoying a nice pizza or cuppa in the Boathouse or a beer or two over in the famous Anglers Tavern beer garden.

It's also the home of Highpoint Shopping Centre (2nd largest shopping centre in Melbourne) & Homemaker centre, has an ALDI store and is next to the fresh food market and Asian restaurants in Footscray.

For those who like to exercise, there is a fitness first gym (and a few other smaller gyms), Aquatic centre in Highpoint, tennis clubs, etc within the suburb. The local Maribyrnong Secondary College is the first government funded Sport Specialist School in Victoria, and Victoria University has campuses nearby.

Maribyrnong is only 15 minutes drive from the CBD (in off peak hours) and is accessible via tram 57 and buses. Alternatively one can catch the train to Footscray or Newmarket and catch connecting trams/buses from there. Depending on the specific location in the suburb it can take anywhere from half an hour to one hour to reach the CBD by public transport.

"Maribyrnong : Love it!"

This suburb has it all!
Its proximity to the city, shops, parklands, schools, transport ... basically everything that a family needs!
It is close to the city, yet still retains that suburban feel to it. It does not feel busy and rushed as other "close to the city" suburbs (eg. Richmond etc.) feels. There is lots to do, but aside from the shopping centre precinct, just the next road down, it is quiet and peaceful. Living here, I have been able to be close to everything (shops, city for work etc.) but whenever I want to take a breather or just to relax, it is just a walk in the other direction! It literally meets all my needs in one location!
Driving in to the city is easy (nowhere near the drive from the South Eastern suburbs where I grew up).
I would recommend this suburb to anyone! Growing families, singles, couples, and even retirees will enjoy living here!
