Passed through this town a few weeks. Full of a lot of wannabes. So many rude people. Even the lady in the public toilet before me was the rudest person. Won't be visiting any time soon

I lived in Mudgee for a few years. I loved the space and made great friends. The town is small but has everything you need. I would like to mention it is very hot and dry in summer, there is no relief from the heat and no water around. One of our reasons for leaving and being on the coast. It is for some but if you like water and all things that are enjoyed near the coast I would think twice.

Not a problem, we rented our house out and rented when in Mudgee, good idea if you can so you know if it is for you or not, we did move there for work reasons though and the kids were in primary school, never thought about staying or leaving just so happened the work didn't work out and their were more options back home.

Thanks Maddys. Renting first sounds sensible. Very interesting looking at what newbies and outsiders say about these regional areas. We've also been looking at Forster/Tuncurry area, and some very balanced reviews often get met with vitriol and ridicule from the locals.

Very Hot, very dry, I enjoyed Mudgee when it was green but I knew it would not last long and brown up again. No water had to order water many times very costly, then winter came and the temp would drop below zero. Found myself wanting to get away every few month to the coast or just somewhere where there were things to do. People enjoyed visiting for a country break, felt isolated when they left.

Firstly I have to acknowledge and pay respect to the Traditional Owners of the land we speak of; to Elders past, present, and the future; the Mowgee Clan of the Wiradjuri Nation.
Beautiful parks were established long before the mine opened or their employees were even born. But by all means feel free to take credit for them. Mudgees history didnt begin with the opening of the first mine. It wont end at the closing of the last.
Maybe peoples unfriendliness is based on presumptions like these rather than what your husband does for a job? It may be perceived as arrogance?
Many were here long before the mines opened and will remain here after they close. But you claim that life will not exist here without people like you and your husband? Just a suggestion, go and pay attention to those parks you take credit for, the dates on the entrance ways and also on the trees that predate European invasion. Look closely at the headstones and memorials around those parks.
Then for a clearer picture of why some actually arent supportive of mining (besides the environmental issues) speak to the endless amount of people whos generational family homes were taken apart and dug up by mines. Without a choice. Or the families who now have been told that the resting place of their loved ones will also be dug up for mining. None of those locals give a hoot about how good the coffee is at a local cafe. When you have a company kick you out of your family home without question and then tell you grandmas remains will be disturbed and relocated cause theres a dollar to be made out of it you may have a better understanding of how you may be received by many.

LidiM - The parks in Mudgee (and Mudgee itself) were established way before the mines. The mines having nothing to do with the two beautiful parks in Mudgee. In my view, the mines have change Mudgee for the worse. Not unlike many aspects of mining.

yes if the people would be more friendly and less arrogant mudgee would be a great place to live. I didn't get any employment due company's not giving me a chance to prove myself. Wouldn't waste my time living in Mudgee unless I know people

Hello. My Grandparents were born in Mudgee in the late 1800s. Sheridan is the family name. Thomas Sheridan/ Mary Jane Lonsdale was my Great Grandparents. Is there any family information Center in Mudgee for me to do some research ? Records, Death Certificates, Birth Records. I hope to visit Mudgee soon. Any help would be appreciated.

I got a notification of an any parts of mudgee to avoid question as well, but can't seem to find it. I'd say maybe avoid a couple of streets nearby the west end sporting complex. Bit daggy there.

l'm sorry you didn't find what you were looking for here benlauren1 , but as you have said yourself you have moved on to Orange were the population is 50% larger than Mudgee how about you do move on and stop baging our Magical Mudgee .5 year here we no nilly everyone and we love them. How lucky were we to find Mudgee

Sorry to hear your views on Mudgee. I agree that the Medical system needs to be looked at, 3 weeks is an unacceptable time frame to wait (off course emergencies are dealt with sooner). Your impression of peoople, pay and prices are cetainly different to mine but everyone is entitled to their opinion. The other person who added a comment is obviously a local therefore not treated with rudeness and contempt by other 'locals' ie. very small minded people. I couldnt have described Mudgee better than benlauren..try being a single mum living in this loserville...Sad but true. The only time I enjoy Mudgee is when I have visitors..too bad I have to stay here when they go home..

Fortunately I have now moved to a bigger country town and am loving it. The people are really friendly. There it a lot more of a social life and I'm much happier. I miss the land and the space, but I sure don't miss the people.

Again it is disappointing to hear of your experiences here, most people I meet that move here love it and find the local community engaging, its a pity you mustn't have mixed with the right people.

Mud, I also feel sorry that you feel that way, I can assure you that as a "local" I don't treat anybody any differently, I have lots of friends that have moved here and love the place, its like anywhere, its what you make of it.

Funny how ilovemudgee is written by the local real estate who have only their hip pocket in mind just like the local council!

Mud we actually love where we live and wouldn't want to live anywhere else. I didn't realise there was a problem in being proud of the place you live? Its a shame a few bitter people can attempt to ruin the reputation of a great area.

Everybody is entitled to their opinion. It is called a free thinking society. You may not be familiar with this however.

I'm all for Free Speech, that's why I thought I would voice my opinion that I feel your comment that ALL "locals" were rude and small minded was not a fair representation of the area. You are certainly entitled to your opinions, I just feel that people using this service might want a rounded view.

Go Mud! As I said before, speaking to a local hire company who rents out trucks to people who are moving, a lot of people move here and a lot of people leave as well. They give the same reasons myself and Mud give.

As l have said in my own comment Mudgee is the best small town l have EVER lived in,it sounds to me that benlauren has never lived in a smaller town.Sorry benlauren that you didn't like our town and you found the 'locals' rude and tell everyone your business,as for me l don't care who no my business as l have nothing to hide. l now l can grow old here and feel very safe and happy in my town. 5 years living here now and many many more to come BEST PLACE IN N.S.W

You also might learn how to spell and punctuate. You wouldn't want to grow old there and get sick. Can't see a doctor straight away and have to go to Orange or Dubbo or even further to get major medical work done. No further comments will be forthcoming. I have made my point. Some people just don't like the truth when they hear it.

Boredom comes from within,and so does rudeness . As for spelling and grammar l didn't think it was a spelling bee l thougt it was a comment board for Mudgee. l have lived in 9 towns including Orange and l hope you enjoy your winters, you will have lot of time inside on the computer picking on people and there towns . lf you had taken the time to speak to loacls as l have you would know that to see a doctor you sit out the front till they open and you get a appointment on that day.

Mudgee is way too expensive, $385/week average rental property!!! unless you're a miner (that's why its expensive) you'll go broke because other wages here are not special. Got to agree with other post, boring night life unless special occasion. It's nice with all the cafe's and such but yeah not great for young people

Check out the latest comment from someone commenting on living in Wellington, NSW. Admits to the Wellington problems but comments they have moved to Mudgee and comment on how unfriendly it is. Would prefer the people of Wellington any day. I rest my case.

Yep Wellington's not so flash but they always say g'day. Funny but I recently met a girl who moved from Sydney and I thought she'll be fine and make lots of friends as she works for a large government organisation with quite a few staff. Apparently they barely give her the time of day..so cliquey.

It's a shame that benlauren and mud didn't meet while you were both living here, you could have got together and whinged about lots of stuff. Enjoy living in Orange or Wellington or anywhere else with a high crime rate. Unfortunately in life those who like to have a sook are more vocal than those that have a positive outlook on life.

Mudgee has a low crime rate because the locals slaughtered all the Aborigines. Charming. The film festival is probably too expensive for the locals, like most of the one off functions Mudgee puts on. Watch the BMW line up in Market Street this weekend indicating that Sydney has come for the weekend. That was always a giggle.

Actually as with most events it is reasonably priced, $25 a head. Are you suggesting that Aboriginals cause crime? Now that is charming. It's always great to have visitors enjoy our town and spend money in the local economy.

Yes there is a very unfortunate history with the Wiradjuri tribe around the region when martial law was declared. Unfortunately I believe that this has sucked alot of the soul out of the land. Sadly, this traumatic past has led to some crime in areas where there are Indigenous people but only because they had their power and autonomy taken away by white settlers.

As a sydney sider who has a farm in hargraves I rarely get into town, however when I do (and people dont know me from a bar of soap) I find people very friendly, in fact its the visitors who dont say gday , thats how we know they are tourists. Ill be moving up to mudgee in the near future thats for sure . Cant wait to get out of the sydney rat race. BH

I agree with the comment alot of people move here and alot of people move as well. I know at least 15 families that have left , each has their own reasons but mainly because of jobs and lack of things to do and extreme changes in the weather.

The Mount Druitt comparison is ridiculous. I'm not a 'local', moved here 3yrs ago, and have always found people to be nice and friendly.
There is a bit of pride in this town, but i think that's a good thing and unless you drag your knuckles along the ground you'll be treated well.

Real estate prices are high because of the mines, not because it's a great town. I made a nice profit for my place. Move out "mud" while you are still sane!

Never come across a more arrogant bunch of people in a town the size of Mudgee...city you would expect people not to be as friendly but for a country town where you pass the same people the majority of the time especially at the gym or school, they go out of their way to not say hello or at least a nod. Moved here just over a month ago and we can't wait to go, it has really put us off this place and it's very disappointing because we thought more of the town prior to the move here. I'll mention also, the customer service in some shops is also a disgrace, I've said hello a few times when I've gone to purchase something only to have them just look and have say hello like it was a massive effort. We have come across a few nice people who aren't from here but the rest of them are a different breed. I don't know what all the hype is about too.

hahahaha - this is what people are meaning about the snobery of Mudgee. If you think you're better than everyone you'll fit right in.

Sadly, after being stuck here for way too long Ive come to realise that the people are simply a very low calibre. I think someone mentioned two bob snobs. This is a perfect description. Most people highly uneducated and small minded/ignorant. There are some very lovely and nice people here but they make up a very small percentage maybe 20%. Im often gobsmacked at the blatant rudeness of people here. Its very uninspiring and at times depressing.

Low crime? Break and Enter, and Robbery figures are lower than average but Domestic Violence, Violent Crimes and Sexual Assault cases in Mudgee are ABOVE state averages. 62 sexual assault or indecent assault cases were reported last year alone, and most assaults go unreported, so you do the math. Not good odds for women and children in Mudgee. Please keep your kids close. Dont let them use public toilets, not in carparks, parks, not even in Big W. Not safe!
