"Maroocydore - beach, shops and fun."

Maroochydore is on the Qld Sunshine Coast one hours north of Brisbane and boasts a great river and superb beaches. There are all the water sports you can think of and the fishing is great. Maroochydore has a beautiful golf course and numerous other recreational venues. There is ample shopping with many shops as well as a large shopping centre offering supermarkets, department stores specialty shops etc. There is also plenty of accommodation for the tourist with some lovely caravan parks as well as motels, hotels, guest houses and B&Bs. Maroochydore continues to grow as do the home prices with many homes exceeding Brisbane prices yet there are still some good bargains around.

"Too Many Idiots For My Liking"

Took my child out Friday afternoon and evening.

Witnessed so many local idiots, that my daughter was very upset, felt scared by it, and wanted to go home.

Security officers at local bus station says it all.

Idiots tearing up and down the main strip constantly, in an attempt to race each other, making the roads unsafe for pedestrians.

People on public transport where children are present, using the "F" and "C" word like it's nothing, showing no regard whatsoever for other people.

NOT at all a friendly place and not a suburb that is suitable for children.

Will be avoiding this suburb from now on, and the idiots can just keep enjoying it all to themselves.

"Maroochydore - Coastal lifestyle with a river and CBD"

Maroochydore is the growing hub of the Sunshine Coast, while still maintaining the the beach and river lifestyle. On the beaches of Maroochydore and Cotton Tree you can enjoy everything from sunbathing and swimming on the patrolled beach to surfing and Surf Life Saving. All sorts of watercraft take to the river and the fishing on or offshore is superb. The Ocean Street precinct has many popular restaurants, bars and cafes to enjoy. The new CBD is taking place with businesses, residential living, restaurants and green spaces. The caravan parks are very popular. Recently there has been a strong demand for properties in the area, resulting in property prices increasing significantly. There is a lot to enjoy here.

"Beaches, breweries and"

We love living in Maroochydore as it has everything we want and it's not too far from Brisbane for a day trip. There's great food, cafes and friendly people. The best bit is the selection of beautiful beaches just on our doorstep. It's also a lot more affordable than other suburbs on the beach.

"Nice but a Pedestrian & Bike Rider Dead Trap"

Obviously pedestrians and bike riders are after thoughts (if thought was involved at all) as the place is a car paradise. Bradman Ave for example doesn't have a single pedestrian crossing. Must be fun playing Frogger every day. Where there is a crossing at lights a pedestrian better have a book to read as they'll get though a whole chapter before they can walk.

"No longer the small town."

Maroochydore has changed so much since 1998. That was the last time I visited.
There is this little Fish and Chips shop we use on Christmas Day, in amongst a small group of shops. Pity I can't remember the street name, how ever. One Australian and an Indian cook. If only they were on the water front, they would have done a roaring trade, but the food was so good, we're going back on New Years Day for another drive. Gee visiting such a great place twice in 20 years. Maybe a long time between visits, but I've always found Maroochydore to such a relaxed place. A little cramped in places NOW, but the beaches are so nice clean and all those council car parks where ever we went for those few days were full.
To me, that's a great sign, the locals are doing something right.
If only the locals could bring a bigger variety in to the place on this particular long week-ends, like Xmas and New Years. Only having a Fish and Chips shop open, who although has great food, there was a bar where people could drink and no security. Yes we went in, just to stick our noses in there and see what was available. Our fish and chips were $37.60 including service charges and the GST.
The Hotel/ Bar not too far away, wanted more than $25.00 for an entree and you can only imagine the prices for the main meal. Lets just say it would have cost us over a $100.00 per person for a meal there. I do understand Xmas time brings the prices up, but they were ridiculous prices and no wonder we could not see anyone in there for a meal.

Maroochydore we love your town, but times have changed and maybe we can help bring more people into to town for you.
There was this great looking Fish, chips and Hamburger place along the water front near where the boat ramp is. The local council should buy that place and employ their own staff to run it. On long week-ends and special week-ends and days, that place would absolutely make a motsa of sales.
There must have been around 300 people along in front of that shop. Then the other thousands of people spread out over the 5 kms from there along the water fronts.
What a fantastic place otherwise. Far better than Noosa Heads NOW.

"Young professionals now calling Maroochydore home"

Having grown up on the Sunshine Coast and now working in Maroochydore, this once small town is emerging into the Sunshine Coasts CBD and fastest growing precinct. Set on the banks of the Maroochy River, Maroochydore and its Baby brother Cotton Tree offer the perfect ying and yang lifestyle options. Maroochydore for its energy, bars, cafes and restaurants and Cotton Tree for its beach/river parks, relaxed cafe scene and Sunday markets. Just an easy 800m stroll down the esplanade along the river foreshore.

Young professionals are now working and living in this vibrant city, with major developments including Emporio, Big Top Market Fresh and the Sunshine Plaza $350m expansion, locals see Maroochydore as a town with a energy supported by the vision of many of its local business community.

Living and working options have never been better in Maroochydore, home prices are still relatively low and commercial lease rates are favouring the tenant. Most would agree that the opportunity to live here today is ore affordable then ever.

The employment sector is also expanding with the establishment of the Birtinya Medical precinct just 20mins away, home to over 6000 medial professionals, the Sunshine Coast more broadly is offering a diverse economic base, away from the traditional building and tourism sectors.

Great for

  • Emerging CBD
  • Proximity to the Birtinya Medical Precinct
  • Great beaches
  • Amazing shops

"Maroochydore - a bad facelift and too much botox"

In 1999, Maroochydore and Cotton Tree was a sleepy fibro beach shack sea side town full of unemployed surfers, single Mums and retirees. With the boom years, from 2001 to 2007 many of the old shacks were pulled down as retirees sold out and low income people were priced out of the area by expensive high rise apartments.

The local shops have gone up market to cater for all the high end luxury apartments, most of which sit empty for the majority of the year. Cotton Tree slips between manically busy during the holidays, where there is hardly enough room to put your towel on the beach and morbidly quiet the rest of the year. For those people who own a shop, they have to make their money in the peak season and try to hold on till the next set of holidays, a difficult situation for many. If it rains a lot as it has for the last two summers, businesses start to fold.

Local employment is in either construction or hospitality, mainly labouring or waitressing. Locally wages are low. Due to the massive building boom construction has tapered off and is likely to remain subdued for a while. The other option is to drive the 120km to Brisbane for work. This can be a hit or miss affair as the road is only 2 lanes wide and often gridlocks. My partner has been caught in traffic jams for over two hours trying to make the one hour trip home. Also the two hour daily commute (on a good day) gets very boring and tiresome in a short space of time - and spending all your time in traffic is not why any one moves to the beach.

Most people are not originally from the Sunshine Coast, they have moved there from another major city with the dream of living the beach life. They dont know anyone and as a result the Sunshine Coast does not have much of a sense of community. Often people get lonely, miss their old friends and realise they dont actually like the beach that much. One real estate agent told me they get a lot of turn over sales from this, as people last about 2 years before they move back "home".

While I loved living on the Sunshine Coast it is turning into a little Gold Coast. I've always said its about 10 to 15 years behind the Goldie. So if you like that, you know what to expect from this area in the next few years.

If you stand on the beach and look at the ocean, its the most beautiful place on earth, if you turn around and look at the land, its a rather dull, souless place.

Hey Whats with the drug addicts and people living in cars? I have never seen them and we have a unit on the Esplanade at Cotton Tree, opposite both the parks and the beach. This is a little oasis away from the pretensions of Noosa, and Mooloolaba both of which remain however easily accessible. Plenty of community feeling I have noticed even being an intinerant local, talking to most folk is a bit like being in the Country when you are used to Melbourne, but it is such a REFRESHING change to have straight shooting helpful people around. Choose your happiness I say.

Digit

I agree with juggler, I live near the plaza and have lived here for just over 20 years. Through my teenage years I spent most nights down at the beach with friends and I don't remember seeing anyone living in cars? Every so often there would be a caravan or a combi but they would just be people getting some rest and moving on in the morning. I also have no idea where you live that you see drug dealers and addicts in maroochydore, but that's not something common that I've seen. And lastly as for the "not much of a community feeling" I think you've been talking to the wrong people. You'd be surprised how talkative people can be if your a nice person.

I actually think that the concept of 'people living in cars' is pretty cool. Think about it; these are the cool vans that people use to drive the length of our East Coast. Rising early to hit the water and surf the morning break for then to continue on their journey. Lets keep everything in context, my parents used to trip from Brisbane in the 70's to both the Sunshine and Gold Coasts + Byron on a long weekend. The classic beachside Odessey, perhaps this is something we all should do one in our lifetime

Times change and so does the demand for better roads and a better access to everything you NEED, not WANT.
Give this town a few more years and read up on what the local council have planned. This information will help you decide on whether Marrochydore is the place for you to re-settle or retire. It's not that expensive right now, but it will climb on the ladder of places to visit, before 2020 comes along, believe you me. As an ex fast food manager and a person who has traveled Australia, Maroochydore is the mirrored image of Coffs Harbour NSW.
I'm not there to talk about that place though.
Infrastructure takes quite a bit of time to plan, construct, implement and action. As far as I can see, there has been a lot of good planning and organizing to get it where it is for now, but in the future, Maroochydore will be a booming tourist town with a whole lot more to offer. So be patient and we'll all reap the rewards.

"Enjoy summer all year round!"

Maroochydore is the commercial hub of the Sunshine Coast. Offering a large number of businesses, shops, schools and other services, this coastal town is a good spot for families to be based.

The major drawcard for Maroochydore, like many other spots along the Sunshine Coast, is the balmy weather and rolling surf beaches. It is a pristine coastline, and many of the locals hit the sand before and after school or work.

The town has a major airport and a number of other transport links, and is only 120 km north of Brisbane.

"Great for the Family"

If you're looking for somewhere beachy to relocate to , or just holiday at, try Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast. Less pretentious than other Sunny Coast spots, it still retains a sense of style and affordability. There are family friendly spots to spend time at the beach and attractions for the little ones like Sunshine Castle, where they can live out some knight in shining armour fantasies. There's also the Bellingham Maze that sure to tire them out. The local restaurants are great, and stylish lifestyle shops abound if you need a little retail therapy. All the mod cons are here, shopping centres, great houses and apartments. But be warned, just because here is more affordable than the rest of the Sunshine coast, does not mean that it's cheap.

"An area with a changing face. Talk about facelifts!"

Cotton Tree has modernised over the last few years and the park area that runs along the Maroochy River now boosts play areas for children, covered BBQ areas, clean safe beach, concrete walkways, and large grassed areas for activities. The park is often used for promotional functions and other fun commercial activities.

Cotton Tree has a Sunday market which is very popular and draws many people into the area who then go on to enjoy other activities.

There are many quality restaurants of all standards which cater to all age groups and economic conditions. Also there are many coffee shops open during the day and you will see people lounging away their time in these, enjoying the warm weather.

One of the Sunshine Coast's most popular bowing greens is in Cotton Tree and during the winter months this attracts hundreds of southern and kiwi bowlers for the winter tournament.

Backing on to Cotton Tree is the Maroochydore surf beach which is always popular and many go and sit in the renovated surf club and have a leisurely lunch while overlooking the surf.

Cotton Tree is only a short walk to the modern Maroochydore shopping centre where people spend hours wandering around and entertaining themselves.

The area is slowly becoming more and more tourist and apartment orientated as the older homes of the area are pulled down and the area redeveloped.

"Maroochydore is seen to be the business hub of the Sunshine Coast."

Maroochydore is an interesting city in that it has so many positive aspects to offer residents and holidays alike. It virtually has everything that anyone could want. It is the business hub of the Sunshine Coast so there is a lot of employment in the area and it is growing at a rapid rate.

The Maroochy River runs along the boundary of the city and there are lovely parks and children playgrounds which are very popular. There is also a great set up at the local pools next to the park.

There is an assortment of home, units and townhouses available for living and there is a strong influence from the holiday sector.

It is busy by coastal standards, but relatively speaking it just ticks along at a nice pace.

For entertainment there is fishing, boating, golf, putt putt, various sports, windsurfing, jet boat riding and of course swimming and surfing.
