Richmond, VIC 3121

I'm seeing a lot of recommendations for singles and professionals so I felt compelled to write on behalf of families. We have lived here for twelve years, the last four have been with two small children - and we're not going anywhere. There are numerous childcare centers, all within walking distance. There are numerous parks, all within walking distance. There are several playgroups, again, all within walking distance. I can walk to my local library. There are three gyms I can walk to and I walk to the one I have membership at.

From the top of my memory there are four primary schools that I can immediately think of, three are government and one catholic. Excepting for Melbourne Girls College, you may have to look at adjacent suburbs for secondary schools, if you can get in: top tier schools, and by high school age your children could use multiple ways of public transport to get to them. There is a shopping center - Victoria gardens with a cinema and bowling available. A plethora of eating options with the majority being child friendly.

We are a two car family and as I am at home full time currently my car just sits on the street. We know almost all our neighbours and have had two 'neighbour' parties. At night we are a quiet street. We are close to the yarra that makes for a lovely walk or bike ride alongside it. I'm a big believer in tramming it to the city as trying to find and pay for parking is pointless.

Downside is the parking issue. There are constant traffic snarls - but hey you can walk everywhere - and as Richmond has a great nightlife, some areas may be noisy.

Lastly I have a special needs child, and the services we have received from the City of Yarra have been exemplary. We have been well looked after.

If you like junkies, scumbags and lots of crime then Richmond is the place for you!

Richmond has some lovely areas, with incredible shops. Walking down the streets can definitely help to bring up your mood, as everyones vibe is so bubbly and friendly.

The goods:
Tons of parks, quality cafes, pubs, restaurants, nightlife is great, public transport plentiful. Everything is in walking distance incl MCG & CBD.

Cons:
Yes there is public housing, and yes there are druggies that hang around Lennox, Church, Highett streets. As long as you don’t leave visible valuables in your car you’ll be fine- they’re mostly harmless and if you ignore them you won’t have an issue.

Famous for popular “Little Saigon” along Victoria Street, there is also no shortage of eating, drinking and retail options along Bridge Road and Swan Street.

Walkers and cyclists can take the scenic route to town along the Yarra Trail. Keep an eye out for Salvatore The Seal (Instagram account @seally_friend).

Best café in Richmond ? We are definitely spoiled for choice.

Richmond is a cool, hip suburb that offers plenty for locals and visitors.

Whether you like sport, pubs, restaurants, cafes or shops - this suburb offers it all.

Whilst it may appear that it is a suburb for the young, there are plenty of happy families who reside in Richmond.

Richmond just got voted as one of the "coolest suburbs in the world" by Timeout and I have to agree it is probably the best suburb in Australia . The locals call it the island as they like to seperate them selves from the north and the south of the Yarra Suburbs. They are like the Switzerland of Melbourne suburbs.

They have everything from the best dog parks, bars, pubs, the MCG and walking distance to the city.

Easy to ride around with mates and easy access to everywhere you want to go with the use of public transport
