"Happy to be here!"

As a 10 year resident, I have to agree with the majority of positive comments. We also came here from the inner north and bought half an acre and built a fantastic home that has great views, space, its quiet, with neighbours that you actually know. As the area is growing the government could provide better facilities such as a new school, a third entry from Vineyard rd, extra parking and even a real hospital not just a day hospital as the area from here to Macedon has grown and will continue to grow. But the city is an easy (offpeak) 30-35 mins via freeway so I in an emergency there is always the major metro hospitals. BTW, I am a degree qualified professional who works in the CBD, and travel in pretty much 4 - 5 days a week, via car/ motorbike and train. In peak hour allow approx one hour to get in/ out the city each way.

I agree with one of the unhappy posters that you do need to be aware about which area to move to. As the suburb is so large geographically, there are some parts of Sunbury which are definitely better than others. Just like you wouldn't move to Richmond's Housing commission flats, and complain about gangs and drugs, then be aware of area you move to. Its not hard to see the areas where people take pride in their homes, bigger lifestyle blocks etc vs those that really can't/ won't, don't and there are commission areas that you need to be aware of. In my 10 years, about the worst that I have had is mini bikes buzzing past, but it being a country/ city fringe suburb, I'm not surprised, apart from that, I have never had any problems and we see the police patrolling quite regularly. On occasion I have left my garage door open over night, leaving my tools, motorbikes, and bikes exposed and have not had anything taken!

The people of Sunbury aren't as ethnically diverse as other areas, mainly white/ anglo/ european background, but that is slowly changing as well as people find the area now its going to be on the metro rail. But as far as "bogans" goes, there are local people who like their tattoos, hotted up cars and motorbikes, piercings loud music, but again, please point me to a place that doesn't have them and send me a picture!!

I have been involved in the junior (and now senior) footy clubs in the area and now my son's friends are all 16/17/18 y/o boys and pretty much are good kids from good families. Yes there are kids who are so-so or bad, and you do see them around, like teenagers hanging around the train/ bus stops smoking, who would've thought....but please point me to one suburb where every teenager is a saint. And with 35,000 people living in the area, the actual numbers of crimes vs say Collingwood with 7,000 residents may be higher but on a % basis its pretty much normal. Every single suburb has crime, none are immune, the things is though, its generally laid back place and not "unsafe" and I have never been assaulted, or bothered, neither has anyone else in my family or our friends.

As far as the shopping goes, Sunbury covers 99% of your needs, supermarkets, butcher shops, target, Harris Scarfe, Dick Smith, Big W, Bunnings, movies, clothes etc, but if you need something else then Watergardens is 20 mins away. I didn't come for the restaurant scene, but all the basics are covered pretty well.

Its unfortunate that the poster who has made so many negative comments, but from my perspective, Sunbury has allowed us an affordable and comfortable lifestyle, that has meant I don't live with a financial noose around my neck, can send my kids to a half decent school and still have some $$ left to do things in life to enjoy.

Overall a nice place on the city/ country fringe that gives you some space, clean air and the ability to live a fairly comfortable life style.

ZZnukebombZZ says "ps: I rest my case I had enough of loudly overtly opinionated Bogans in my short time in Sunbury and will not spend another second in a race to the bottom with this bogan nbeez." Do you actually read what you post? I have the one account and stand by what I said, the other posters who are bagging you make up their own mind and have their own opinion, but from where I sit, it looks pretty close to the mark.

I really enjoy your diatribes and how you judge me as uneducated and pathetic, living in a poor area, riddled with crime, drugs and no morality....then you say don't like name calling, however you spout it like you are a the "pissing boy" fountain....and I am the loud, opinionated bogan?...do you hear yourself? ...I'm glad this is the last time you will be posting......I will go back to my poor, pathetic, paid off home, jump in my pathetic pool and live in fear of people like you moving into the area....and then you wonder why your neighbours gave you hell? Really? Its not obvious? I bet it has lots to do with your endearing demeanour!

Your review is very helpful! Thank you. Do you know if Scott Street (next to Forrest Street reserve) is an ok area of Sunbury?

Ive been in Sunbury for 19 years and never had an issue with drugs or gangs or anything. Youre going to find idiots anywhere you live however I dont see them. Maybe theyre quiet idiots!!! I absolutely love it here. Sadly I will be leaving this year due to a marriage breakdown. I cant stsy anymore as theres too many memories. But for anyone wondering if they should move here I say yes. I have a wonderful GP and wonderful vet for my dogs. Shopping is fine. You can get anything you require. Its a friendly place and people are relaxed.

We first came to sunbury in1968 and never had a problem

I lived in Sunbury for 34 years, it has kept the country feel fairly well. the little town ship just keeps getting better and better, with a wonderful array of restaurants, and entertainment for Children, a cinema, community centre, and services, a memorial hall where they have community get togethers. lots of schools and churches. the little theatre company. made lots of lovely friends. could alway find what you wanted without having to go to the city. train station close by, only 10 minutes to the airport. on a negative note parking is starting to be a problem, and I didn't think it was fair that we had to pay for the Melbourne parks and gardens water. we should have stayed in Bulla shire. but all in all a great place to live.

I came to Sunbury over 20 years ago. I have found it safe and community minded and friendly from its hangover of originally being a country town.

Hello there Sunbury residents. We are first home buyers looking for an affordable 3 bedder in the $650K-$750K range. Sunbury seems to tick many boxes for us, yet REIV quarterly growth data (2018-till date) and our Buyer's Agents seem to think that capital growth in Sunbury is relatively low. The quarterly growth graph on REIV does indicate that. And that there are better places for similar money East/NE of Melbourne. What is your opinion? Any thoughts on Anderson Road? Currently looking at a prop there! It is very encouraging to see such positive comments about Sunbury yet we feel conflicted about the capital growth. We visited it some weekends ago and liked the small-town regional feel, without the BIG roads newer suburbs have. We feel like Sunbury could be the place for us yet can't seem to know for sure. Thanks for reading my comment.

Capital growth was average prior to the Electrified train line going in. Since then it's been flying. We have had a slow down during the rate rises but I'm guessing next year when they start falling it'll hot up again. In 2018 we were attending auctions with 100 people outside. It'll come around again. The town is becoming very popular. My mrs and I and my daughter live in Rosenthal. Which is convenient with supermarkets and freeway access. Sherwood is nice, Jackson's Hill is nice. Plenty to choose from and very affordable right now.

"Hits and Misses"

Moved to Sunbury 12 months ago from a Melbourne suburb to be able to afford to buy a house without a loan as we are on one income.

Pro’s-currently loving the serenity of living somewhere so incredibly quiet, in our particular older estate it sure is anyway. Love the big house blocks, the views, the lovely nature, all the birds, the hills, the beautiful neighbouring country towns and drives, the laid back friendly people. Also loving the proximity to the airport and to the Essendon suburbs. Much prefer the Tulla Highway to the Calder, really nice scenery!
The medical services for blood tests, scans etc are fabulous, very short waits too. The GP’s have been very poor so we are happy to keep returning to our previous area for GP services. Great having Bunnings, Supercheap, Good Guys and alike close by.
Good fenced dog park.
Easy access to the city for nice shopping days etc.

The con’s-
Sunbury itself is missing a lot for us personally. The town has a really dated, icky looking town centre which we almost never utilise due to this (hasn’t changed in 20 odd years it seems), the restaurant’s and cafes are mostly of a really poor standard compared to nearby Melbourne and a thing that also really disappoints us is there is no (decent) fresh fruit and veg shops. I suppose we must be just used to what we perceive as much better quality and choices so we have really noticed the difference. So much so that we still drive to Essendon 2-3 times a week to do our shops etc.

Choose your area wisely in Sunbury. We recommend the Killara, Strathearn and Jackson Hill estates. Actually also like the Rosenthal estate even if it’s not as nature filled as the other end of Sunbury. Much smaller blocks there though and not much shade but still like the look of it.

Sunbury desperately needs a big shopping centre, like a small Westfield but hopefully nicer than Airport West! We go to Highpoint as we find Watergardens not all that. This area has far outgrown what is available here that’s for sure.

Sunbury seems to be quite a dry belt so can look extremely brown in some parts compared to closer to Melbourne or further out. So can be hard to have a nice lawn etc in some areas of it.

Would I recommend Sunbury, absolutely, if it’s what your budget permits, there are some really lovely spots. If you like difference local shops to peruse through and lovely restaurants etc Sunbury is literally the worst we have ever experienced for this.

We will most likely return to our previous area when our budget permits but for now I would be lying to say we weren’t happy here because we are :)

I hope this helps if you are considering the move here:)

"best for low-key weekend vibes"

Renting here atm after 6 years in the city, and we will probably sell our apartment in Hawthorn and buy an actual house here.

If you’re not into the whole “busy weekend” thing, sunbury’s the best. i can spend the day at the vineyard, have a coffee at the local spots, or just walk around the nature reserves. it’s quiet but so fulfilling.

"honestly miss it"

I’ve been in Sunbury for 17 years now, and it’s honestly unrecognisable from what people used to think. It had a bit of a rough reputation back in the day, but that’s long gone and couldn’t be further from the truth now.

These days, it’s a safe, vibrant community with families, cafes, and a real sense of pride in the area. The scenery is just stunning too, with hills and mountain views all around — it’s like living in a hidden little paradise just outside Melbourne.

The only downside is it’s definitely getting busier, with more people discovering it.

I have sadly moved to the other side of Melbourne for the wife's work, and we're both already planning out how to make moving back possible

"Came for the wine, stayed for the lifestyle"

We honestly had no intention of buying in Sunbury — we’d barely even heard of it! Just came up here one weekend to check out the wineries and get a little break from the city. But after spending the day, we were hooked. There’s this amazing blend of nature, history, and community that’s hard to find so close to Melbourne. We ended up looking at properties “just for fun” and realised we could actually afford a beautiful home here. We went from curious visitors to locals in a matter of months — best decision we’ve ever made!

"Melbourne’s little secret"

Living in Sunbury feels like a hidden treasure. You’re close to Melbourne, but it has this quiet, countryside feel that’s hard to find. We love spending weekends at the wineries or exploring the local cafés on O’Shanassy. The Galaxy Land playground is a hit with the kids, too!

The other reviews are bang on - this is definitely one of Melbourne’s best-kept secrets for families.

"History, Nature, and Wine All in One Place"

Sunbury’s got this unique charm I haven’t found anywhere else. Between the vineyards, the old courthouses, and Rupertswood Mansion (the birthplace of the Ashes!), it’s like stepping back in time. The wildlife around Jackson Creek is beautiful, and it’s so relaxing to just wander around. It’s Melbourne’s secret countryside getaway — it really doesn’t get better than this, and just 30 min from the CBD!!

"Absolute hidden gem — some of the best value in Melbourne."

Probably the best value property in Melbourne at the moment — bar none. I lived here a couple of years ago and desperately want to move back.

Nowhere else can you get such affordable homes, nice country feel, plenty of greenery, all with a 30-minute train to the CBD.

With the new rail upgrades happening in 2025 (Sunbury direct to other cbd stations) I’d expect this area will become extremely popular very quickly.

Wish I’d bought here.

"LOVELY PLACE TO LIVE"

I love living in Sunbury. It has great schools and a wide range of shops. It has a country town feel but is still close to the city. The people in Sunbury are friendly and welcoming to new families. I have lived here with my family for 11 years and we all love it. Sunbury has great outdoor spaces, parks and playgrounds including the beautiful Nook Creek area. It is growing quite quickly and hopefully with the new road under rail construction for one of our busiest roads the traffic will flow better, although peak hour is nothing compared to Melbourne traffic.
Sunbury has a fabulous new Library/learning centre, a great cinema complex and an ok aquatic centre. There are plenty of fantastic restaurants and cafes in O'Shanassy street and Evans street with other popping up on a regular basis.
Sunbury is affordable and with everything you need to create a great lifestyle.

"Fantastic town with everything you need"

I’ve lived in Goonawarra, Sunbury, for 23 years. We are in a small court with fabulous neighbours. It’s quiet and peaceful with a country feel but close to everything- shops, transport, schools, parks, great leisure facilities and lovely walks (which were very much appreciated in lockdown). Our neighbours have for the most part been here a long time as well and are friendly but respectful of everyone’s privacy. We’ve never had an issue with crime here- we travel a lot and nothing has ever been a problem. The city commute is getting harder with growing traffic but it’s still much better than from the east or the south. Sunbury is growing a lot- many new subdivisions are going in, so the town will inevitably change, but we’re still happy here. If you want peace and quiet but good access to the city (and the beautiful Macedon ranges), I’d recommend it. Property values are still relatively good but going up steadily.

"Beautiful little place. Just missing a beach lol."

I've lived in Sunbury for years. It's growing now a substantial amount. We built a new place 7 years ago near the Vineyard's and love it. Its quiet, family friendly. Our 5 year old can play in the street with the other kids like I did 30 years ago. So many walking tracks and lakes/rivers. Housing is affordable kinda low mark is 450k up to around the 1.3mil mark. As stated there is the odd "rental area" but the majority is nice. Just do your homework and pick out a nice area. If the houses around have manicured gardens chances are its a very nice place to live. The restaurant scene is getting better all the time now. Large variaty of eats. We don't need to leave town for much. Its 35mins to the city. Not as traffic congested as most other parts of Melbourne. I have noticed if there is any crime at all it seems to be people from other suburbs coming in and causing trouble but its very rare. Last year we had snow just up the road, 5min drive into Gisborne area where my brother lives. Between Macedon,Gisborne and Sunbury you cant really go wrong. It's a very nice area. But don't come live here ok? We like it quiet lol..

"Wonderful country feel close to the city"

Sunbury has a wonderful ‘big country town’ feel, has everything you need at your door step and close to the city for commuting. People are generally very friendly, you know your neighbors here. There’s little you can’t find in town (cinema, library, supermarkets, restaurants and fantastic parks etc) but DFO and Water Gardens shopping centre are only 15-20 mins away.
It’s very peaceful, we love the bird life and seeing kangaroos and enjoying the many walks and parks. You don’t get that in many places this close to the CBD.
Having lived closer to the CBD in Sth East and West areas, we have found there’s far less traffic than other areas the same distance from CBD as well. Sunbury itself we find traffic no issue where people who’ve lived here a long time feel it’s too busy , comparing it to when it must have been very quiet.
House and land is very affordable, again value for money this close to CBD is phenomenal. As with all suburbs of towns, do your research as to which area suits you.
We haven’t had any concerns or issues in the area and feel very safe. We feel much safer in Sunbury than when we were closer to the city, for sure.
So much to offer and love in Sunbury!

We built new and have an amazing new home with a good amount of land for the same price as a smaller unit closer in, with little to no land and are so happy with our choice.

"Great value and a touch of country"

I've lived in Sunbury for 8 years. Part of this time have been single. Still live in Goonawarra. Never knew much about the different suburbs prior to buying my house. I'm fussy about noise and environment so would recommend Goonawarra and Sunbury in general. Not the best for singles of any age unless your wider family and friends live in area but apart from that I don't have any other negatives. I have found Sunbury to be a safe, bushy, country and positive place to live. I am moving out of the suburb for awhile but may come back. Its great for families, retirees and most people who don't want to be caught up in the other choking suburbs in north and west. I've never had a negative experience and commute to city 5 days a week. Contrary to what someone else has posted here the trains are always on time, locals are friendly and great value housing. Its close to the airport and lovely country drives and towns. If you're finding negatives with Sunbury then you're really clutching at straws. 99% of people are decent like anywhere. I live in one of the so called roughest neighbourhoods and never felt unsafe or threatened ever. I've lived in places like Brixton, London..now that's rough. There are many good eateries popping up and see Sunbury thriving in future.

"Goonawarra is no longer the 'Bronx'"

Coming from other parts I had no idea about Sunbury but the low priced, value for money housing lured me in. Sunbury itself is quite divided as in people from certain parts feel they are better than other parts but its just a small town mentality. Rolling meadows is boring and has no trees but has some lovely homes and is super quiet. In town there are some lovely leafy streets with beautiful older homes. Goonawarra gets a bad wrap but really its affordable, very safe for kids and flat so they can ride bikes to school. It's lovely and green and there are a lot of playgrounds. Public transport is bad with 1 bus to town an hr and the local bus station is often dirty with loud abusive teens present so you just keep to yourself. Shopping is standard as far as groceries etc are concerned but for anything else you're best of shopping in the city. As a single here it's not ideal and honestly the social life is mainly for young families and married couples. There are lots of local services and activities for young families so it's an ideal starting point.

"I love it"

We built a new home in Sunbury back in 1997, for the meager price of $120,000. I love living in Sunbury, for what I would consider to be a rural town it has everything I want there are plenty of places to do food shopping, numerous medical practices, lots of great restaurants, a cinema, a great variety of schools, the major chains of Target and
Big W.
It does lack a Japanese restaurant, and as many have said the nightlife is not the greatest, but that in itself could be a good thing it discourages young people from hanging around in the town or getting drunk or taking drugs and starting fights, we we see far too often these days.

We now have a day hospital which caters for renal dialysis and chemotherapy services, two operating theatres for day procedures and a range of specialist clinics, which has replaced the old hospital on Riddell Road, which closed due to the availability of anesthetists or lack of I believe.

If you are into high end fashion, Sunbury is not the place for you, try Paris or New York, as clothing stores are a bit limited, but Sunbury is within easy commuting distance of several large shopping centers and the City is only 30 - 40 minute drive off peak (of course). It has everything I need anyway.

"Underated"

Aged 32 me and my Fiancee moved to sunbury 12 months ago from Essendon. We purchased a block and built due to the great land prices compared to melton werribee etc and the traffic isnt that bad in the morning compared to the west gate and monash. Sunbury is a fantatstic town with a great country feel, unlike most new instant suburbs. There is some Ferals living in the town but no more than i have experienced all over Melbourne. There are plenty of shops and DFO is only 15 minutes down the freeway if you want the bigger outlets. There isnt a huge range in restaurants and nightspots to go to but you cant expect that living 40km from the cbd and to be honest that doesnt bother me. Vline train times are limited but the new metlink line is opening soon. I heard all the bad things about Sunbury befopre i moved but have been pleasantly suprised. Love the place and only hope it doesnt get too big and looses its country feel.

Hi there, my husband and two small kids are thinking of moving from Essendon as well. We are from nz originally and don't know a huge amount about the good/bad areas of sunbury. Could you let me know areas you have found good/safe etc?

"Peace and Quiet"

I moved here a year ago after living in St Kilda East and Hoppers Crossing - and I have to admit, I love it up here. It's the sort of place where you know and look out for your neighbors, kids ride their bikes up and down the streets and cars are generally registered :) We still play "spot the graffiti" because its so rare you'll stumble across it. It's a small town, with small town activities (Markets etc) that may not be for everyone, but its a breath of fresh air for me. Its nice being able to take your dogs for a walk at night and not worry about being mugged. Oh! And on Saturdays there are sausage sizzles everywhere! (or so it feels like anyway) Also - there are quite a few vineyards around - so if that's up your alley :)
The cons - it does get substantially cooler up here than in Melbourne, public transport is lacking, and the last V line train arrives here before midnight. There isn't a huge selection of restaurants, but there are quite a few gems in Sunbury and in the surrounding areas if your willing to drive. There aren't many pubs / clubs around and the nightlife here is quite tame.
Like most areas, you need to watch which part of Sunbury you choose to live in. Not that any area is dangerous, its just some suburbs take more pride in their homes than others. Said areas are easy to pick - just take a day and drive around the town.

One more thing, and this is just a side note - not pushing my opinion either way, but I've noticed that the population is predominately white Australian. Not sure why that is, or how it came about.... But it's how it is.

"A nice quiet town with everything nearby...Well almost everything and an update"

I have been here for 2 years and have slowly gotten used to the area now. People are quite nice to each other, most of the times, my street is quiet and the occasional hoon will pass by otherwise it is tranquil and all I can hear is the birds in the morning chirping away.

Restaurant wise there isn't much choice, it seems to be mainly fast food with a small amount of good quality restaurants thrown in. Shopping wise everything is in Sunbury and you don't need to leave town to make purchases unless it is a niche.

I agree traffic with all the crazy roundabouts make life more difficult especially when trains are passing through and during school peak times where a calm person may be tempted to give into road rage. There are no traffic lights and I suspect drivers don't know what an indicator is and/or are reluctant to use it therefore leaving with you supposed psychic powers to somehow predict what will occur.

The library is great albeit small and there are plenty of parks. The Nook is rather nice and great for dogs and humans alike.

The vet on Gap Rd is highly recommended as well if you have furry friends.

I quite enjoy living here in Sunbury and am glad to have moved here.

The only drawback is if you work in the city and have to commute via public transport. It is a daily battle and by the time I get to work I am so agitated I cannot concentrate. Trains don't run on time or at all. It is incredibly frustrating trying to get to work and back and I believe this could be improved. Nonetheless this is my only negative. Try to find work locally or at Tullamarine as the commute will be far easier than attempting to somehow get to the city and back.

Also gp's not great and not having a hospital is frustrating, however I felt it this year more so as my son was ill for most of the year. Maybe I just haven't found the right doctor ;-)

This area suits me as I am a single parent, its reasonably priced and I have made many friends and it is very quiet with a country like atmosphere.

Just a quick update. Unfortunately I've had to revise my review as I no longer feel safe in this area. Many houses in my street have been sold and one family told me they were leaving as they felt unsafe themselves. Roads are getting busier and busier with plenty of hoons to make navigation even worse. Fresh vegetables and fruit seem to be impossible to buy so I now have that delivered as the farmer's market is only on once a month. There are plenty of troublemakers on the street as well. I can't say I'm impressed with the school due to several bullying incidents and injures including a head injury where I wasn't contacted and had to rush my child to the Royal Children's...The doctors here are dreadful and half the time have no idea what they are talking about. There is a lack of parking especially near the station. Restaurant wise there are 2 restaurants I am brave enough to venture to otherwise I cook at home, have had food poisoning several times eating out. Unfortunately all of the above has soured my thoughts on Sunbury and we will be leaving soon. A shame.

  • Affordability

  • Busy on the roads at school times

Hi! How reliable are broadband services in Sunbury? I have heard some bad things about internet options there. If I work in the city, are train services that bad from Sunbury? How much time am I expected to wait for train daily? Please advice

paulabearb

I'm with iinet and they have been fabulous, no issues there however Optus and Telstra are not great so stay clear of them. In regards to train services they are not great however that is due to all the railwork at the moment as Sunbury will no longer be vline but metro which will hopefully improve things and make services more frequent however only time will tell. I work in the city and it currently takes me an hour and twenty minutes to get in however when trains are not running it has taken me up to 4 hours to get home :-(

chaitu_madala

Thanks for your reply Paul. 4 hours to get home is ridiculous. VLine Bendigo time table says that it only takes 40 mins to get to CBD from Sunbury. Should I not take this info as basis for my move to Sunbury? Is 1 hr 20 minutes average journey time to the city or when there are delays?

paulabearb

You're welcome. I work in Fitzroy so it takes me longer to get to work as I have to catch the loop and a tram. If you work near Spencer St/Southern Cross then transport is easy and fast, it doesn't take longer than 50 minutes provided the train is on time etc. Though I have heard rumours that once Sunbury is part of Metro then the train will be going through the loop not to Spender St/Southern Cross. The transport issues and delays are a temporary issue especially during weekends and school holidays when trains are replaced with buses. Hope this helps.

Hi Paul,

We are thinking of moving to sunbury. Reading through the posts I see there's a mention of some areas within sunbury as "troubled areas". Im looking at one of the block in "Rosenthal estate" on vineyard. However my block extends to the existing madinen drive. Just wanted to know the safety around existing "ashfield estate".

Your advise is highly appreciated.

Mandy D-B

No way. Theres a lovely and very well stocked fruit n veg shop on OShanassy and Evans. Gourmet foods available too. Fresh bay leaves. Farm eggs. Artisan cheeses and breads etc. if you need to see a Dr go to the new centre on Gap Rd. Theyve moved from Macedon Street. Im a nurse and very fussy who I see. I have never been let down. Very experienced, Drs and a modern facility. Maybe youve been going to
The bulk bill places??? I cant comment on them. Im a single woman now and I dont feel unsafe. I dont encounter lunatics with guns or anything. Ive had no threats to me. I dont know what area you are living in but honestly I think Sunbury is one of the safest suburbs in Melbourne.

Mandy D-B

I should have said a fruit and veg shop on both OShanassy st and Evans sts. Beautiful produce. Not expensive either.

"Safe, secure and pretty too"

Sunbury is a very safe and secure place to bring up children. It's the sort of area where you can forget to lock your door and when you come back home, everything is still untouched.
The primary schools are some of the best in the Western Suburbs. There is also a good mix of government and private schools.
There are plenty of extra curricular activties for children from swimming, basketball and athletics, to dance, art and drama.
Sunbury has lots of shops, coffee shops and even a cinema. It is truly a lovely place to live.
There are many trees and in the town centre and in the estates. There are also a large number of nature reserves and parks.
Finally, the best thing about Sunbury is that everything keeps on improving- more shops, more housing, better medical facilities and transport. I love Sunbury and have lived here for 11 years. I hope to live here for many more.

This is only one incident in yardley street, and i was warned to stay away from that newer estate, as there are a lot of teenagers and older kids. Never a good thing in any town. Do you have experience of living in a better area?

TheMac

ZZnukebombZZ - don't be so rude and hateful. I have lived in Sunbury for 12 years now and have never experienced any trouble. There are blackspots in every area and there is a well-known estate in Sunbury that is prone to burglaries but that is one estate - not the whole of Sunbury. Also, just because somebody has had a different experience to you, that does not mean you are right and they are wrong. It means you are all many parts of a bigger picture. Let people read all the reviews and then judge for themselves. Don't attack every review that does not agree with yours.
You also bag the governement high school and the private high school. How well do you trully know Sunbury because there are actually 2 government high schools, private Salesian College, some Christain schools and finally the government run Specialist School SMRSS which also has students of teenage years.
You seem to be on a one-person crusade to persuade the rest of the world that your view of Sunbury is the one, true view. You have moved now, so get on with the rest of your life. If you find you are having trouble moving on with your life, try looking in your current local directory for counselling services. Life is too short to spend it in bitterness.

11dagher

That's awesome. I highly respect you opinion. I am afraid that far too often people are quick to denigrate this town.
It has truly amazing features and lots of character.
Take a stroll through many of the landmarks that this place has to offer and your sense of appreciation grows further.

GaneshD

@TheMac.. We are interested to move to Sunbury and looking for a block of land in Rosenthal Estate. From your above post I see there is one estate more prone to burglaries. Can you please advise which estate is that as we really done want to land up in a troubled area. Your guidance is highly appreciated and thanks for the great information about sunbury here.

jasmyn-stefszkyj

I like the country feel n local shopping district but coming from st Albans this town shocked me
30 years and under residents don't seem to realise there is life outside of sunbury and they will steal from their own homes their neighbours and have no thought about anybody but themselves.
There is a high crime and drug presence here but has gotten better over the years.
It's a Beautiful place and is was to grow up in, beautiful nature a impressive golf course annual festivals, mini weekend or monthly street markets and plenty of entertainment provided by local pubs and community clubs.

I don't understand why they are so miserable.
I think one of the main problems here is that there is a lot of crime and they do go to jail and sunbury seems to have a lighter safer feel it gets cleaned up but for a limited time only those people who have no appreciation for anything and act as if they are entitled to anything they want and they will take are then released back into the community and bailed to their home address back in the mix of the trouble and have no responsibilities and therefore the bad eeri feel repeats.

my advice is to be safe like any suburb but choose wisely who you associate with and if you have kids keep them busy with planned after school activities ( plenty to explore )
so they don't hang out in streets and get mixing with the wrong people.
Other than that there is beautiful scenery, kangaroos are not seen as much as a few years ago but I have pet possums I hand feed and I love.

for anyone needing material emergency aid food and relief there are multiple facilities here that help and the mature generation here are very compassionate.

Also great is we have chemist warehouse X2, aldi, NQR, Coles, Woolworths x2, target, Harris Scarfe, big W, best and less, car washes, golf course, a new massive skate park, swimming pool, and more and all just around the corner no matter where in Sunbury you live
And not forgetting the best fish and chips and pizza.

There are many pro's and regards to the cons just be safe lock up have insurance and stay switched on.

"Great place to live the dream"

We moved from Brunswick to Sunbury about 8 years ago, we built a nice new home on a large block with a pool and magnificent views over the township. Sunbury has allowed us to afford a dream lifestyle in terms of housing security (small mortgage), family holidays every year, and three of those being overseas and I can send the kids to a good school at an affordable rate. Even though the nightlife is nothing to talk about, pretty much everything else is there, cafe's, movie theatre, and pretty much most of the shops that you need. The bus is a bonus as it takes us to within 100 meters of our door in the Rolling Meadows estate and is direct to town, however more frequent services would be appreciated, especially when the train is electrified. Like every other suburb, there are things that could be improved, like more options for teenagers, a 24 hr emergency hospital, and better road access as the roads, especially at peak hour can get crazy. More shops away from town would be a bonus, including a new POST OFFICE!

"Country town close to the City"

The Electrification of the train line is currently being constructed and will improve regular services.
Sunbury is an old Country town full of street trees although the newer areas could do with more tree planting. There is a great deal of History to the town with some stunning old mansions and buildings throughout.Regular bus services connect to the Town Centre with plenty of shops but need more.
Schools eveywhere including Rupertswood Private. A new Public Hospital. Road access in and around town is good and improving. Most people work at Melbourne airport about 15 mins away or the City or the Industrial areas in the northern and western suburbs, 15 to 30 mins away.

Still reasonably affordable and probably very good value ie. it is not cheap but you get a lot for what you pay.

"Sunbury the Negatives"

What I hate most about Sunbury is the railway line cuts the town in two making it difficult to get around. All the supermakets are in the centre of town so there is no such thing as just popping in for milk and bread. Expect it to take half and hour cause you may have to wait at the rail crossing while a train goes through. I now go to Gisbourne to do my weekly shopping as belive it or not its quicker. Getting out of town in the moring is a nightmare as there are only 3 ways out of town and all of them get totally blocked up because of school crossing (expecially around Sunbury College). It is a totaly traffic jam in the morinings. I get poor or now reception on my HD TV when it is raining or overcast, same with my wireless internet service. I also found Optus were the only one's that could give me a internet service on my laptop. Not have a very good report on Sunbury College either I found there is rampant bullying going on in and around the school. Local hoons like to hang out at the railway/bus stop which makes in very uncomtable to catch transport from there. Most of the resturant are average with a few notable exceptions. I am moving out now as I have been very unhappy in Sunbury. its a really pity ss the town its self is very pretty and my neighbours have been wounderful.

Sunbury used to be a great place to live many years ago until the teenagers started to gate crash parties and kick every letterbox in the town. We moved away many years ago to come to Qld and we've never looked back. The best thing we did was move.

LynneMcClean
LynneMcClean

You obviously didn't get to the shops along Riddell Road, bridge over the railway line, may be a minor diversion but better than 30 minutes at the rail crossing. I have lived in Sunbury since 1997, and there have been at least 4 ways out of town since then that I know of. As for traffic jams around school zone the same could be said of a lot of them.

"Country living but yet close to everything"

I love Sunbury I have lived here almost my whole life(expt 6 months when I was 7) I have lived in 3 different areas and I love it still. I recently got married and my husband is from Flemington/North Melb we both love Sunbury and cant think of a better place to raise our family.
Some people complain about the trains but I prefer the vline trains sure they aren't as often as the normal ones but they are clean fast and have bathrooms! it only takes about 30 -45 mins on the train to get to the city and we are in the centre to get to anywhere on one side we have Melbourne the other Geelong and then Bendigo and Ballarat!
Its a great quite place with everything you need to raise a family!

Hi all:

Currently I am living in eastern part of Melbourne in Croydon and have been living for last 3 years. I loved every bit of it as shops, transport etc are all close by. Recently my wife got a job in Bendigo and to travel everyday to Bendigo, it's a big commute( 3 hrs one way ). I am seriously considering to move to some suburbs in west and obviously bit established ones. I picked up Sunbury in terms of transport, shops etc. There is Vline that goes from Sunbury to Bendigo and also to city. Wondering whether it's possible to get some feedback about Sunbury in terms of living with a family. I read somewhere the other name of Sunbury is Scumbury . Well we have got some bad element in every suburb. So hows it living in Sunbury? How about the shops, transport, parkland and access to basic amenities? Also which part of Sunbury is a good part?I was told to avoid certain parts of Sunbury.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated as I am seriously considering.

I can only speak from my own experience and I love living here.
we are looking at selling up and moving but this is purely because we want a cheaper house so that both my husband and I dont need to work and it is honestly a very hard decision. if i can find something in my price range i will be staying but in saying that there are some very nice houses cheap i'm just looking at VERY cheap.
Where we are is a very quiet area apart from the occassional idiot tearing around one of the corners near by but its not very often so not a big deal at all.
It does get very busy in the town as everything is there but it seems to be more during peak times and on a saturday (but i usually do my shopping on a sunday).
I've seen very few 'scum' in my time!! Definitely is a lot of families around.
Good Luck!

i'm in Vineyard rise estate which is a smaller estate and probably not as well heard of as the others.
from what i've heard Goonawarra estate is one to avoid but i cant really say for sure as i dont go there very often.

Goonawarra isn't too bad, its just that there are some housing commission houses inter-spread amongst the homes, and they can cause some issues, but overall, no worse than most suburbs

"Lovely Family Lifestyle with the bush on your doorstep!"

I moved here 3 years ago with my young family from Brisbane and an almost identical lifestyle. It has been lovely and compares well with the relaxed laid back living, but still having the comforts of great local shops, food and entertainment. All they need here now is a Kmart and we would never have to leave town! We have met some wonderful families and made some great friends. Sure everyplace has it's fair share of crime and bored kids/teenagers, but I don't see it as being out of control at all. We are very happy here and glad we chose Sunbury as our home town, when we made the big move interstate.

"Only good if you have young kids."

Was once a small country town, though over the last 10 years it has grown into an outer-suburban satellite city, and what is come with that, is all the negative effects of such a sudden growth. I currently live in Sunbury, and as a young women I do not think it is very suitable for singles, and couples, and may only suit the young families. We have had our house egged before, and drunk people on our lawn before. Public transport is not that great for someone who does not drive, and commutes to the city everyday. There are only V-line trains do not go very often, once an hour during the day. The culture that has developed in Sunbury over the past years is what is bringing it down, with a lack of respect for property, and town culture. What was once a lovely small town, is now on the path to becoming another bad western suburb.

Melbourne's best kept secret. Great place to live. Ticks all the boxes for all ages. Private and State schools, cinema, good shopping and great restaurants. Freeway close by and good train and bus services. Retirment villages and plenty of doctors, specialist, dentists, etc. Great Community health centre.

I was born in Ireland and moved here with my husband and children 7 years ago. We bought land in Sunbury (Ashfield estate) about 6 years ago and built a nice family home so we're living in Sunbury 5 years. I have no negatives at all, we have all settled so well here and we love the place. Yes you get some ferrals but you get them everywhere.
