Reviews of Arthur Street, Eltham

"Friendly community living."

Arthur Street is a long road that winds up and down hills, with views from just about any spot along the street. It starts at the shopping area in Main Road, and ends in the Woodridge estate, so the age of the houses vary from 1940's to around 2000. Being such a long stretch of road, it has been attractive to hoon drivers, but speed humps and roundabouts have slowed them down somewhat in recent years. A local bus service meanders around the top end streets to take residents to Main Road where they can go to the post office, train station and shops within a short distance. We have lived for 30 years in one house at the Pitt Street end of Arthur Street, and usually go to Main Road in our car, which takes only a few minutes. We've thought about moving occasionally, but we would miss the community life. The shop traders are all so friendly and helpful, all the banks are there, excellent library, great cafes and restaurants. We don't have kids, but our neighbours all seem pretty happy with the local schools their children attend. There are half a dozen medical clinics within a mile of each other, and the Austin and Northern Public Hospitals are close enough in emergencies. Several excellent vets in Eltham too.

Great for

  • A great walk if you are fit - up and down hills.

Not great for

  • Hoon drivers occasionally spoil otherwise quiet nights.
