Reviews of John Street, Eltham
"Recognized as one of Eltham's most desirable streets"
John Street runs for two blocks from Main Road, crossing Bible Street and ending at the top of the hill in a cul-de-sac at a small park accessing adjacent quaint and private modern developments. Lower John Street's traditional (mostly Federation) small houses have been considerably gentrified, tastefully, in recent years. Upper John Street features houses in discrete native gardens, climaxed by famous Landscape Architect Gordon Ford's extensive heritage garden. That is surrounded by a remarkable group of mainly mud-brick houses which are a significant part of Eltham's unique heritage extending from nearby Montsalvat, the former, and still active artist colony - which is itself a unique "village" of stone, mud-brick, and other constructions. So John Street has a unique ambience, even in leafy Eltham. It is in easy walking reach of Eltham's extensive parklands (two blocks away), retail area, Health Centre, and other facilities. It is like an Australian version of an English country lane - but the upper end is certainly a very steep walk! And the Eltham Hotel is also only two blocks away down hill, although fortunately that doesn't impinge on the John Street dwellers. We love it.
