Reviews of Elizabeth Street, Melbourne (CBD)

"A street for now and the future"

Elizabeth St is a street of the future, with the Melbourne City plan to develop it into a residential corridor.

Elizabeth St also has plenty to offer right now, including:
1. Federal Coffee Palace at the GPO is the best outdoor cafe in Melbourne
2. Captains of Industry above the magic shop across the street from the GPO is the best kept secret cafe in Melbourne
3. Hardare lane which shres the block with Elizabeth St has a great French creperie
4. Victoria Market on Elizabeth St has the best deli, fruit, vege, meat and poultry
5. The Good Life Gym in on the cnr of Elizabeth and Bourke
6. Sensory Lab at David Jones on little collins near Elizabeth has the best coffee in Melbourne
7. Evans is the best cobler in Melbourne at the Royal Arcade on Elizabeth near Bourke
8. Coconut House on Elizabeth near Franklin street is the best Malaysian for great prices in Melbourne
9. Melbourne City School is opening up on King Street, only 3 blocks from Elizabeth st
10. Melbourne University is one of the best in the world and is on the northern end of Elizabeth st.

In terms of Development, they should convert:
1. the site of the old Royal Dental hospital at the top of Elizabeth Street into a little park
2. sink the railway lines of Flinders street underground, so the Yarra can be accessed from Elizabeth Street.
3. And limit traffic on Elizabeth Street from 7am to 7pm.
4. Make the buildings increase the amount of greenery on their facades to reduce noise echo

"Shops and more shops"

On the corner of Elizabeth Street and LaTrobe Streets in Melbourne you have access to Melbourne Central a major shopping center in the heart of the city. A number of smaller restaurant/cafes have opened up at the bottom of Melbourne Central Tower so don't get lost inside with the shops - there is Kikki.K's the paper store just off Elizabeth Street under the tower and check out places like Cafe Era.

If you're looking for a motorbike, there are a few places along Elizabeth. I guess you can almost get anything here. There's also a Minator comic book store and some really nice book and paper shops along between LaTrobe and Bourke. Once you get to the corner of Bourke and Elizabeth St you are at the beginning of Bourke Street mall. There is a large building called the GPO, this actually used to be the main Melbourne Post Office building but the transformed it into a high end shopping center. There are some nice little cafe's nestled into the bottom and a great place that sells flat bread pizza nestled into the back of this building on Bourke Street near Elizabeth St.

Incidentally the street is named after Queen Elizabeth, you should note the order of the streets - King St, William St, Queen St and then Elizabeth Street - King William, Queen Elizabeth.
