"Plenty of greenery"

Lovely area to live in, plenty of outdoor activities to participate in. Take long walks or cycle through wonderful parts. Public transportation is accessible. The only thing to gripe about is the lack of variety with shops, restaurants, and options for a late night outing... or variety in general. Also the neighbood is fairly tranquil, but there are those occasional neighbors that will become rowdy on the weekend or you'll hear late night speeders racing each other. Very much a family location or for any one looking for a low key life. As a renter in the area, houses are not on par with superb conditions (as in new, air systems, heating) yet are very pricey... just throwing that out.

Cons
  • Lack of accesible shops
  • some hoons, burnouts on weekends

"A suburb with everything"

Greensborough is big and the different areas vary greatly. The streets off Henry St are lovely - established 50s-60s homes, many parks, including a running/bicycle track through parklands. Lots of dining options nearby such as the very trendy Mabel Jones for brunch. Greensborough Plaza is only a short walk away and has a new luxurious cinema seats and brand new dining precinct. A surprising well-kept secret is the proximity to the city - my husband rides his bicycle to work in the city every day in under 50 mins. Only 25mins drive to the city at off-peak times (longer during peak hour - bring on the North-East link!)... as I said, though, it is a big suburb and there are some less-than-desirable pockets, such as around the pub in Main St, near Savers and the bus depot. These are not residential areas, though, and most areas of the suburb are incredibly beautiful and safe. There is no freeway noise in most areas of Greensborough (maybe there is in the spots closer to Watsonia North?), also I have never come across hoons (as mentioned in another review). I have lived here for seven years after moving from Kew. I feel safer in Greensborough than in Kew or Hawthorn, though both those areas are very beautiful.

"Greensborough is a great place to live"

We have lived in Greensborough since 2000 and have seen many changes. Greensborough is becoming more and more vibrant with the new Greensborough Walk and Watermarc. There are now more choices when it comes to shopping or dining out, gym and medical facilities. Greensborough has beautiful parklands as well. Easy access to the Eastern suburbs and Western suburbs and only 20 mins drive to the airport! or can take even 20 mins into the city in non-peak hour traffic. Our neighbours are great, Greensborough is a great family suburb.

"Best kept secret on the North"

Greensborough is 20 kms north of city with easy access to the east (Eastern Freeway), to the west (Western Ring Road) then Princess Freeway or to the very north (Hume Highway). I have done door to door non stop to Torquay in 1 hour 15 mins! Its also a jump skip and hop to the airport (20 mins). Just on the cusp of the green belt.

Banyule city council has been active in investing in infrastructure - Watermarc is the largest indoor water slide in the southern hemisphere. The vineyards are not far in Kangaroo Ground of the Yarra Glen. Houses are reasonable in price and being on the correct side of the ring road - fewer traffic jams.

Neighbourhood is a mix of mature and young families. Kilparin Lake is do under a yet another facelift....this is the suburb to be in!

Greenborough is a great place with lots of shops and restaurants you can go to. Transportation is great as well so you are always able to get around. "Greensborough is a great place to live"

We live in Greensborough and love it here. It is a very nice and leafy suburb. We find Greensborough very convienant- serviced by a train station and buses to various suburbs. The shopping centre has the major shops that we need (Coles, Aldi, Target, Kmart) and Woolworths is just outside. A choice of different cafes, restaurants, a cinema and WaterMarc. Not far from the entrance of the Ring Road freeway. Greensborough is becoming more vibrant, Greensborough Walk is currently under construction and many new units and townhouses recently built or under construction walking distance to the shopping centre/ train station. Greensborough is a nice place to live, safe and convenient especially to raise a family or even for young couples.
Pros
  • Good public transport (train and buses)
  • Leafy and green
  • 30mins from city

"Green, pleasant, handy and safe - it's starting to catch on too"

We bought here 8 years ago, when affordable buying in our preferred Darebin council area (Northcote, Thornbury, Preston...) was just a pipe-dream. Just further north than these suburbs, and we were looking at some pretty soulless, semi-industrial wasteland suburbs that we knew were not where we wanted to raise a family. East, and Fairfield, Alphington, Heidelberg and Ivanhoe were equally expensive.

It was actually on house-hunting in the not-much-better (affordability-wise) Eltham that we found ourselves attracted to the Henry St area of Greensborough. Lots of 1930s to 1960s character homes on typical Melbourne blocks, undulating hills, diverse treescapes, parks and quiet streets, close to the Plaza (JB HiFi and Robinson's Bookshop two welcome additions since I moved here), WaterMarc and Grimshaw St restaurants, a hop-skip-and-a-jump over to Montmorency for (admittedly much better) café/village scene, easy escape out to the gorgeous Yarra Valley and country but seriously only a 20-30 minute drive anywhere we want to go in Melbourne (even quicker at night when we tend to want to head back in to the nightlife-style suburbs of the inner north), train to the city, immediate access to the Western Ring Road for airport, goldfields or Western suburbs (ScienceWorks took no time at all!).

Admittedly, it's not a pre-made hip suburb (some decent cafes and bars wouldn't hurt) and it probably lacks an identifiable 'personality' or 'vibe' as a community, but it also lacks the pretension and the dodgy element that other suburbs have. But the suburb seems to be being 'discovered' a bit recently; a property not far from me sold for close to $1m, and $600-$700k houses on normal blocks are not rare at all (my friend having just sold one). It's a bit sleepy I guess, but its being woken up and perhaps its day will come.
Pros
  • Well serviced
  • Friendly and unpretentious
  • Leafy and green
  • 30mins from city
  • close shops
  • nice neighbours
  • Good resale values
Cons
  • Probably lacks vibrancy

WayneN1 We live in Vermont Pde just 2 streets away from Nell street and have it is generally a little busy during commuting times as it has the Greensbourough Primary school at the northern end, otherwise it is fairly quiet.

"Friendly and quiet"

We have moved back to Greensborough from Ivanhoe as it has more to offer us than Ivanhoe did. There is much less Graffiti than Ivanhoe and the shopping is much better. Eating out is also cheaper and the choice of restaurants is great ! House prices are much more affordable and you get alot more bang for your buck. Public transport is fantastic and the streets are green and clean. We have just extended our home in Vermont Parade and we plan to stay here for a very long time as we can walk to everything Greensborough has to offer and people are very friendly.
