"A beautiful town to live in"

Having lived here since 1976 I have seen a lot change over the years. you'd go up the street and know everyone you bumped into. These days it's only every second person. The pub which was renowned for it's Sunday smorgasbord lunches is where people would come from places far and wide for a great meal. There was the Post Office, milk bar and fish and chip shop in Station Street and the local supermarket was Ritchies located where the current IGA stands. In Winter we played Footy and in Summer we played cricket. The girls would play netball or tennis. A simple life but very enjoyable. Not much has changed in that regard, now there are just more sports available to the kids with basketball, soccer and an array of gyms around the town these days. It's been a fantastic place to raise the family with the kids attending the local schools and a place we can truly call home.

Looking for a home in Somerville?

"The place to be!"

I moved to Somerville in 2013 and have loved every moment of it. The town has it all right at our fingertips. With easy access to The Peninsula Link, bringing the city, the beaches and the wineries right to our front door. Our shopping centre/s offer what you need for the day to days and Frankston CBD is just around the corner for those bigger shops. We have an amazing butcher and fruit and veg shop right next door to each other too. There are plenty of parks and lead-free dog parks throughout the town as well as sporting facilities, medical facilities and even aged care. What more could you want?

The thing I noticed most when moving to the area was the fact that there was always someone (pet owners, families, fitness lovers) out walking at most times of the morning/day/night. This was not something I saw much of in my previous town.

I love it!

"A peaceful place"

Just moved into Somerville and have no regrets. Have been researching this lovely little town for months, and have inspected many houses before I bought our new home here. There are lots of courts and green grass corridoors webbing a number of reserves and dog walks for easy walking. Some pretty spots such as Unthanks reserve and the two in Black Camps Rd near Somerville Heights Primary school. After extensive researching and visiting surrounding towns and villages such as Hastings , Pearcedale, Baxter, Bittern, Frankston South, Crib Point, Cranbourne and langwarrin, I can't understand why Somerville is ranking 277th. I have moved from Phillip Island and with everything on your doorstep in Somerville, eg. Shops, Drs, vets, transport and easy access to major and private hospitals thats why I think that Somerville is a perfect place to spend my retirement. And last of all but not least, I find the people friendly and helpful.

Rentals in Somerville

"Small town where you can walk to all local amenities if needs be."

Clean, quiet, family friendly little town on the Mornington Peninsula close close enough to all the beaches without being congested during Summer. Local shops, schools, GPs in easy access, 10 mins to Bayside shopping centre, 10 mins to Mornington and close to the back beaches too if that's more your thing.

Great for

  • Walk to the shops
  • Convenient location

Not great for

  • Hard to find a rental property
  • Needs better cafes and nightlife

"Somerville the place to be"

Somerville is a family orientated town on the gate way of the Mornington peninsula, a great central location. Somerville is constantly growing with the most recent projects being a new doctors clinic, police station, new sporting club rooms and the Somerville hotel undergoing a major renovation which should bring a lot of interest to the town. Somerville has a Coles, Woolworths, iga, Aldi, centro which are all relitavly new, as well as local butchers and bakeries etc. Somerville has numerous gyms and cross fit clubs. We have 2 public primary schools, 1 catholic primary school and 1 public high school.
We have good access to public transport via buses. Since the peninsula link has opened we have an easy commute to melbourne around 50 minutes. Somerville is located Central to plenty of work hubs, Frankston, carrum downs, Dandenong Mornington just to name a few. We have a few eateries but there is room for improvement/better quality. We have the best Thai restaurant that brings people from far and wide, so make sure you book in.
The neighbourhoods are filled with friendly people where on a Friday arvo after a hard weeks work you will see neighbours have a beer together out the front while their kids are playing in the street.
I have lived in Somerville all my life and believe it is best suited to young family's and first home buyers.
Good luck trying to rent a house in Somerville, you will have to put your name down with realestate agents as there is a huge shortage of rentals on the market.
I believe Somerville has a bright future ahead, a happening town, which should result in good capital growth. Weather your planning to nest or invest your money is well spent in Somerville.
Clarendon drive, Pembroke drive and wiltshire drive and woodlands estate are sought after areas to live.
Anywhere inbetween North to South; eramosa road west and blacks camp road
And east to west;
Station street across Woodlands dr would be the best location and neighbourhoods been only walking distance to everything.

Great for

  • Convenient location
  • Plenty of work hubs
  • New infustructure

Not great for

  • Hard to find a rental property
  • Busy traffic at school times
  • Needs better cafes and nightlife

"A great place for families, couples and the elderly."

We moved into Somerville in 2007. We knew that there were changes on the way meaning that investment was being made in Somerville meaning that it is an up and coming area.

Somerville was once the quiet apple orchard area, but changes have meant that land has been developed and offered housing for a range of people of all ages. This has given Somerville a good shopping centre that includes everything you will need and this has also created employment. There are nice walks and areas for kids to play, a local YMCA gym and aquatics centre so there is no excuse for not getting to the gym people!

The new bypass that is due to complete in 2013 will enable city workers faster and easier access to the city making Melbourne nearer to the residents of the Peninsula.

Employment opportunities in and around Somerville include a number of larger companies; Councils (Rosebud (Mornington Peninsula Shire) and Frankston (City of Frankston)), HMAS Cerberus, Chisholm TAFE, Monash Uni, BHP and Inghams. There are plenty of wineries and restaurants along the Peninsula offering lots of employment opportunities for all ages. There are a lot of medical employment opportunities too.

Somerville is close to beaches; 15 minutes drive and you can be at Frankston beach (which is a great safe beach for kids) but the benefit of Somerville is that we do not live amongst the high beach traffic. The Peninsula is where many head to for holidays, but for us we can pop down to the beach or a bit further towards Sorrento and feel like we are on holiday but with only a short drive home to our nice comfortable bed!

Sorrento has the ferry to Queenscliffe so a day trip to the otherside of the bay is easy to do and an exciting day out.

Somerville is close to Hasting Pelican Park where the kids can have fun in the leisure pool. For the school holidays kids can spend a day at the local RSPCA, Moonlit Animal Santuary for a nice day full of activities and don't forget, Dromana has the drive in movies making a great family night out!

In summary Somerville is great for all ages and has a lot to offer. Welcome to ''Sommie''!

"Not as good as it used to be."

I grew up in Somerville in the 1970`s and 1980`s and it was a lovely little town. It still is okay but It has a lot of vandalism and can be a bit scary after dark. Housing is affordable and there are still quite a few nice areas - Clarendon drive being one of them and also the Woodlands estate. Shopping centre is a vast improvement as to what it was and has quite a few nice boutique shops. I work there just about everyday now and would consider moving back but would much rather Hastings - specially for resale value. Overall good for families and close to Frankston.

"Nice small town atmosphere"

I lived in Somerville for a few years and it is generally a very relaxed and peaceful town.
It is the gateway to the Peninsula with Mornington and Hastings on the West and East of the town.
There are many beaches within a 10 minute drive and plenty of Peninsula wineries to explore.
I have noticed the shopping precinct has really developed since i left there.

All in all a great place to live but not great resale value on property. Prices stay pretty stable due to its proximity to Melbourne (approx 60km). It also takes too long to reach the CDB on the choked Monash Freeway or Nepean Highway.

The high school was completed in around 2007 to compliment the existing primary school.
The town will get a huge lift when the Frankston bypass is completed in around 2013. This will decrease travelling times to and from the Peninsula.

"A small friendly town"

Somerville is an old area on the Westernport side of the Mornington Peninsula and it was a centre for apple growing originally. A lot of the original family still have descendants in the area.

Its very easy to get around as there are walking paths everywhere. Also bike paths which go from Somerville to Tyabb and on to Hastings and beyond and are very popular.

It is on a train line and has a bus service.

Has three supermarkets and a fourth is supposed to be being built this year.

There is a hotel in Somerville and a wine bar. A very good Indian Restaurant and a couple of Chinese Restaurants.

Large stores are: Target, Best and Less, Tates Timber and Hardware, Coles, Safeway, Bakers Delight.

Many small shops and takeaway food outlets.

Property ranges from first home to larger homes on acreage.
