Reviews of Yarraville, VIC
"Yarraville world's most livable city"
My parents migrated to Australia back in 1960. they chose Yarraville to buy their first home. It reminded them of the small italian village back home. Growing up in the area, I always found that Neighbours and local shop owners looked out for you. It wasn't uncommon for my parents to send me to the local deli and pick up some deli produce and a bag of freshly grounded coffee. The purchase was always paid the next time my mother did the shopping. Nothing much has changed. People are very trusting here and working in the village we all know each other.
The restaurants are really first class and The Sun Theatre keeps the village alive at night.
Where else can you grab a drink in a funky wine bar, have a world class meal and watch a movie in the grand old Artdeco cinema and then to top it off either walk home or catch the train.
Yarraville has attracted young families and professional couples, its so close to the CBD, only a 12 minute car ride or 5 stops on the train.
"Love the inner west"
Amazing Yarraville great coffee, lunches with choices a plenty from a simple sandwich, Italian, Mexican, Grilled, old style fish and chips, healthy juices and salads, the list just continues. I work at Nicholas Scott Real Estate and I'm biased, so come see for yourself and enjoy the life style. Don't forget to book a movie with our own Sun Theatre an Icon. Feel free to stay for a drink at one of the incredible bars or pubs. #loveinnerwest

"Great Place to Live and Lease"
I work at Nicholas Scott Real Estate and obviously love the inner west, Yarraville has an unbelievable community, incredible village precinct with great Cafes, restaurants pubs. Its so close to the Melbourne CBD, public transport, bike paths, parks, and with the completion of the western distributor, Yarraville and the immediate inner west will became a place to be! Much more to say but just come and visit. By the way its still cheap Real estate compared to any other inner city suburb.

"The excellent of Melbourne"
There is a lot of great and fun things you can do in yarraville but the main one for me was Rocco’s deloitte have been going there for 45 years and i am still going there to this day
"Best of all worlds - community if you wanna join it or stroll by yourself through our little secret under the bridge."
l have lived in Yarraville on & off for the last 25-30 years and the best 2 things about Yarraville are; 15minutes CBD City & Melbourne renowned live entertainment options & Nightlife and 15minutes to "bush" - have you ever driven to and from anywhere over eastward or even North / South these days and all you could see were endless red taillights & no back street short-cuts anywhere to be seen, classic "suburbia", Yarraville is NOT. Secondly, it suits any age group or "type" and, don't get me wrong Yarraville has definitely had its periods where there were dominating "types"... Like the celebration of "choice to love whom ever you wish" when everyone claims the renovations began in earnest. Renovating must be FUN with no kids and plenty of disposable cash, similar to teenage cashflow and frivolity l imagine?? Then came other family types which brings the friendly park atmosphere to the area. And l have recently been heard to comment, that the companion dog seems to be the latest "must have" accessory in Yarraville because everyone here has a dog, you must have a well socialized one or you will be very embarrassed by multiple doggie meet-and-greets you encounter on any outing in this here village. Best of all, it suits anyone at EVERY age and is currently a very balanced environment. Oh, and l lived on top of a shop in Anderson street back in the late 90's when my partner owned a picture framing shop down near the dry cleaners. No one gets the train noise worse than down that alley of a wind tunnel, so l am sure hearing traffic (which you get everyywheree) is probable the worse thing anyone can come up with the criticise the place - plus one year was in Top 10 suburbs in the world and one of the 6 years IN A ROW that Melbourne was voted best place IN THE WORLD to live!!!!!! Please, can anyone top that? I think not............. I heart Yarraville!!!

"Lovely community, charming area"
Located to the west of the CBD, Yarraville is the perfect place for families, pets and children alike. A bustling village centre lined with charming shops and cafes surrounds the easily accessible train station. The outer streets are filled with gorgeous heritage houses, blooming flowers and green trees.
Honourable mentions go to the Sun Theatre, a beautiful art deco cinema with countless charming little theatres to choose from and the Cornershop, the local cafe with a lovely community and great selection of food and drinks.
Overall a beautiful place to live.

"Oasis of community harmony"
Have been here for a few months now. What an amazing place to live. There are beautiful houses lived in by lovely people with a sense of community. Lots of shops in a central nearby strip provide everything one needs on foot. There is a clean and beautiful train station, and even this station is an architectural stunner with red brickwork and a picket fence. There are many parks and the place just has a wonderful atmosphere.

"Great place but owning a house is a pipe dream"
Yarraville is an awesome place, I've lived in a few inner western suburbs as well as the east and Yarraville has got to be the most community orientatated place I have ever lived in.
Currently renting here and have been for the past 3 years.
Honourable mentions to Hop Heads and Village Cantina in the Village!
Pros: cafes galore, friendly neighbourhood, lots of parks, train comes very frequently as it's a split train line and of course the cinemas!
Cons: expensive, it's unrealistic too own a home for under 1 mil...yikes, also saddly yes there's a lot of trucks so unfortunately the site isn't the best.

"So much to offer!"
Yarraville is the perfect location for everyone! Whether you are looking for a property close to the city or somewhere to settle down and raise a family! Yarraville has it all from schools, shopping precincts, sporting arenas, parks and more! The area has a quirky vibe to it that makes it feels warm and welcoming!
"Not a fan"
Just look at all the houses up for sale and rent and you'll see how popular Yarraville really is. Honking trains continually, smoke/air pollution, one way congested streets and footpaths, lacking in parks, greenery and walking tracks, no proper shopping outlets. It's tiny town for a big price.

"One of Melbourne's finest"
Brilliant suburb that should never be overlooked. A small village feel only 8 kilometres from the city, this suburb is a heavenly mix of old and young, families and singles, and has outstanding public transport and roads access. Many leafy streets with stunning period homes line the suburb.

"Village atmosphere"
I have lived in the SKY (Seddon, Kingsville, Yarraville) region for 8 years now after having lived all over Melbourne (Bentleigh, Glen Iris, Thornbury, Williamstown) I have found nowhere else I would rather be.
My wife and I moved to Yarraville 3 years ago and absolutely love it. The village feel, friendly neighbors who actually say hi and talk to you, and the old world charm. Everything you could every need is within walking distance and the commute to the city is a very short one (drive, train or ride)

Agree with most of this however have had friends move due to their kids having constant asthma, dust and carcinogenic fumes from trucks .
Is it worth paying this much if your kids are constantly sick? As reports from RCH have shown about the inner west. Does everyone choose to ignore the RCH reports?
"A gorgeous village with a heart of gold <3"
This is a really, really lovely suburb. Its unique street layout makes it easy to move around from each charming little local business to the next. If you ever travel to Yarraville, travel by train. The cute little train station is located in the village, making it easy to get around and commute. Enjoy lunch at any of the natural burger restaurants, authentic Italian pizza restaurant, Greek diner and have a coffee at any of the lovely little coffee shops (I would recommend the Corner Shop. Shop for clothing and other cute little items at any of the many op shops - try Green Collect - and search for books at the Sun Bookshop - for young adults and adults - or the Younger Sun - for children. Then settle down for a relaxing movie at the Sun Theatre, a beautiful building from the art deco era. Overall, Yarraville is a lovely place. The shops and businesses are gorgeous, the community is so nice and it is in such a convenient spot :)
Love you, Yarraville!

"Star of the West"
A movie at the Sun Theatre (with a choc top) & a short stroll to Barkley & Johnson wine bar for a discussion of the film - a perfect night in Yarraville & a good example of the inner city lifestyle amenity Yarraville offers. The “village” atmosphere & sense of community are major draw cards. The elephants in the room are the surrounding heavy industry & the traffic - particularly the issue with trucks through the area, & getting across the Westgate Bridge. However getting this close to the CBD on the eastern side of the city is a significantly more expensive exercise. For those coming from across the bridge – Yarraville’s proximity to Seddon, Newport, Footscray (inc. the market) & Williamstown (the beach) add to its appeal. The south eastern sections of neighbouring Kingsville are an alternate if you can’t find what you want in Yarraville itself. I recommend it to my clients wanting an inner city lifestyle with a strong sense of community at an affordable price point relative to the eastern side of the city. Scott Hall Buyers Advocate

"Community, creative & family-friendly - Yarraville has is all!"
I’ve lived in Yarraville for 13 years and owned Invite Me party shop for 3 years. My favourite thing about Yarraville is that the area has a real warmth and sense of community to it. You’re surrounded by amazing considerate, friendly and creative people. Plus, it’s so central and convenient to get to and from the CBD.
You really are spoilt for choice for cafes, restaurants and boutique shops. For the best cup of coffee in the village head to Cornershop, Wee Jeanie or Coracle cafe serves up the BEST soy chais! Goje is a must-visit too for yummy frozen yoghurt. All the fro-yo is made onsite and is all plant based... There’s decent nightlife too with lots of great places to eat and drink like the rooftop at The Railway Hotel.
If you’re planning a party head the magical wonderland that is Invite Me party shop on Anderson Street. The colourful store is chock-a-block with everything you could ever need to throw the best party ever.
For anyone visiting you must go to the Sun Theatre and take the kids for a picnic at the pop up park on Ballarat Street or the beautiful Yarraville Gardens.
I’d rate Yarraville 9/10- It only loses a point because of the at times bad traffic along the main streets. More needs to be done to better manage the flow of traffic, especially around the level crossing where you can get stuck for up to 15 mins at peak times.
If you’re wanting a real sense of community and a nice village vibe move to Yarraville!

Can take forever to get on to the Westgate Bridge with traffic congestion being really terrible at peak times. Also with respect to the changing population of Yarraville I would liken it to St Kilda. Both were once really diverse communities with long term residents, creatives (priced out of other suburbs) and others contributing to a special, unique sense of place generating a lot of great grass roots stuff. Now St Kilda has lost so much of that, and its vibrant, culturally influential history ... replaced by, not my term, a whole lot of cashed up bogans.
At least the Sun Theatre and Bookshops are still in existence but if you want to find fantastic little bars and an amazing diversity of great restaurants head up to Footscray, its still looking shabby but is full of gems. For creative hubs and galleries head to The Substation in Newport or the thriving multicultural Footscray Multicultural Arts Centre. If you are looking for an indigenous oasis with places to walk your dogs or just commune with nature Newport Lakes in Newport has it well and truly over Cruikshank Park.
"There’s nowhere in the world like Yarraville!"
My family and I have lived in Yarraville since 2013 and I own Heal.Thy Self Co. on Ballarat Street. I would describe the area as friendly, unique, wonderfully supportive and extremely family oriented. It's a very close-knit and genuine community that cares for one other.
Someone new to Yarraville or visiting just for the day should take a lovely walk along our main street (Anderson Street), see a movie at the world-renowned and stunning historic Sun Theatre on Ballarat Street, and then stop in for some lunch and delicious coffee at Heal.Thy Self Co.
Best place for a bite is obviously our place!! Offering amazing, healthy and nutritious meals every day of the week until 2:45pm.
I'd rate Yarraville a 10 out of 10. There is nowhere in the world like it.

"Move here if you love breathing in pollution and noisy trucks"
I've lived in Yarraville for 2 years. I originally lived in a quiet street and loved walking to the village, through the lovely parks and visiting all The Village has to offer. However, after moving onto Francis Street I have definitely begun to hate living here and am going to be moving soon. We can't open our windows as the pollution from the trucks is almost overwhelming. Although there is a 'truck curfew' it doesn't apply to any trucks using it as a thoroughfare (as long as their destination is past Francis St) or any trucks coming and going from the Mobil refinery which is only a few metres from my home. The refinery smells so bad sometimes that it makes us feel honestly depressed that we can't enjoy the neighbourhood without smelling petrol from our loungeroom.
There are definite pros to living here such as being close to the city, the community vibe, the cafes, bars, restaurants and op shops however the cons do outweighs the pros for me at this point. Anyone not living on Francis Street or Somerville Road will probably not share my view and that's okay. I appreciate everyone's opinions and like I've said, Yarraville is an awesome suburb. It is much nicer than Brunswick or Coburg.
I've loved living here but I would suggest only moving here if you are not on the main roads and you don't mind the traffic noise during peak hour, trucks, pollution or refineries.
"Its like a little country town in the middle of the city"

"Moved here from London and love this place!!!"
I moved from Crystal Palace in London back in January and my husband and I wanted to find somewhere that had a lovely village feel to it, where we could retreat to at the weekend and just hang out. We also wanted a relatively decent-sized property (having moved from a one bed place in London) and we really wanted a little garden and some local parks.
We looked all over Melbourne and whilst there were definitely some other places we liked, none of them had the right feel to them (price was too high / train line was unreliable / not sure about community spirit) until we happened upon Yarraville. We love it here!!!
Yes there is a fair amount of traffic and it can be noisy with the train (which is definitely a downside) but that, for us, was a small price to pay to live in an area that has everything that we want: cafes, restaurants, cinema, pubs, boutique shops.... the list goes on and on.
And the fact that you're only 15 mins (max) from town is a huge plus. It makes the morning commute a lot more bearable. And in the opposite direction you have the beautiful area of Williamstown and its beaches! Huge plus point.
What I do wish Yarraville had was:
* fewer lorries
* trains that didn't honk their horns at 5am in the morning until 9pm in the evening - come on Metro sort it out!!!
* a couple more gym / exercise options
Other than that, I can honestly say this place has made me feel like I've found my Melburnian home. It's very similar to the village feel you get when you live in a pocket of London, and has really helped in making me not feel too homesick.
Love it!!!!

You reminded me of friends whose house would shake because they lived along the side of the railway line. Those noisy trains really are a problem for people living next to them / near the heart of the village. Its also not that safe for kids crossing the railway line. The underpass needs to be excavated out. We went to a party thrown by a local member where that was said to be on the agenda, more than a year ago, and it hasn't happened yet.
Because when the underpass existed it was dark and smelled of urine, people would avoid using it. What about levelling the crossing? For cars and pedestrians, let the train go up and over, then you could build a high platform which also encompasses the old for heritage & such. Elect me to council, l will get it done, haha hehe......
Was going to comment anyway @JustineF coz your comment made me giggle - my son barracks for Crystal Palace and l always thought it was a fictional place on my son's World Cup Soccer Game on PlayStation. I think this just the opposite of what I am doing for my project. I always hear people say good thing about yarraville......whenever I say I live in yarraville...Oh that a beautiful suburb......I didn't do the project based on one person's statement........there are thousands who live in nearby suburb like the footscray and sunshine who say good things in yarravlle. "Polluted, surrounded by industry, overpriced and not the pick of the west!"
We have lived in Yarraville for 10 years, we moved here shortly after our first child was born. Yarraville is full of TOXIC SITES due to past industrial sites or POLLUTION due to its current proximity to industry .. which it is surrounded by on all sides. We won't grow veggies in our back yard because the LAND WAS BUILT UP FROM LANDFILL and you can see it with all the weird nails, bits of glass and metal present in the soil. It has TERRIBLE TRUCKS running up and down Francis St and Somerville Rd all day. The truck TRAFFIC IS SO BAD that walls in our house have cracked from movement in the earth and we live a couple of streets back from Francis St near the village (the best part of Yarraville). We are sick of washing toxic dust that turns into polluted sludge off the front of our house. There is often a NASTY CHEMICAL SMELL wafting around in the middle of sunny days, I don't know what is causing it industry or trucks. It can also be SCARY letting your child ride their bike to school with all the trucks on the road. So many sites are POLLUTED that they can't be built on. For example Clare Court Childcare Centre down near Cruickshank Park has AstroTurf in the outer play areas because of the toxins in the soil. Other main toxic sites, only some of which the council hasn't let developers build on, exist near Yarraville Gardens and Coles. There are also many other potential HEALTH HAZARDS for example down at the end of Francis St is the Mobile Terminal with around 30 massive concrete silos full of PETROLEUM. There are regular safety drills there and elsewhere such that you can hear alarms sounding regularly. Near the village, which is the most desirable part of the suburb, most of the houses are on SMALL POKEY BLOCKS with no off street parking and the streets are CLOGGED WITH TRAFFIC AND PARKED CARS most nights because lots of people come to go to the lovely cinema or the large number of cafes and restaurants crammed into the small shopping strip. Actually the cinema the Sun Theatre, housed in a lovely restored art deco building, is really the main draw and sympathetic cafes and restaurants and a few boutique shops have grown around it. But we were disappointed to see the cinema doesn't screen films that are not mainstream block busters (a little time after the big chains screen them) like low budget or art house films that you would expect to see there. There is NO HIGH SCHOOL nearby and the SkyHigh group has unfortunately been lobbying for one for over 10 years. I know parents who were there at it's inception. it is not close to the beach and there is only one horrible pool, tiny and ugly without airconditioning so you need to drive to Williamstown beach or to North Melbourne, Kensington or Altona North if you want a nice place to swim. There are a couple of great restaurants but they are a bit pricey for every day eating. We love to go to Footscray to get authentic asian cuisine. Yarraville isn't really multicultural but does have a village feel. Not long before we moved there it was populated predominantly by industrial / factory workers and greek immigrants post the Second World War. Now more 'middle class' white people have moved in, and creative people not cashed up enough to buy elsewhere. That is what you see in village with the 'cool cafes' and a few hipsters walking around. Personally I think the CULTURAL CENTRE OF THE WEST IS the FOOTSCRAY ARTS precinct, the SUBSTATION IN NEWPORT and other similar organisations. Yarraville has nothing to match that. We are looking for a place in Newport near the glorious Newport Lakes one of the best kept secrets in Melbourne not just the west. Also by looking south of the Westgate Freeway which borders Yarraville there are still real estate bargains to be had. Prices to buy in Yarraville with pokey streets, pollution and toxicity are now a ridiculous joke.

AndyG2, do you still live in Yarraville? Is the traffic at Francis St still as bad as it is? I am considering to move there, either Francis st, Tongue St or Sommerville Rd, would you give me some advice? Thanks
Hi, yes we are currently still in the area. Don't live on Francis St or Sommerville Rd they are the main streets trucks use. Tongue St is in one of the better pockets of Yarraville. Sorry I didn't see your question sooner! Admin deleted my (honest) original posting therefore I didn't expect to be allowed to put it up again.
AndyG2 - do us all a favour that love the Village and its MANY MANY MANY positives... Make that move to Newport sooner rather than later. You're bad press for the those of us here that absolutley love the lifestyle, people, community, shops, restaurants and schools. I live just off of Francis and don't experience ANY of the overly exaggerated garbage you're on about. Yes.. traffice is frustrating at times. Welcome to city living.... duh! Trucks are now off of Somerville Road... and trucks on Francis will also be a thing of the past. Which will increase its property value immensly. Have you also considered some of the schools , like Wembley (one of or MANY MANY top notch public primary's) use fake grass because it's low maintenance, not muddy and the kids prefer it? I bet you haven't.. too easy to presume something horrible instead isn't it? Fair enough with the Coles Park but good hell.... what suburb doesn't have its nasty secrets. Small blocks.... Move to CRANBOURNE then! Seriously, your review is ridiculously one sided. No good food in Yarraville? Overpriced... some of them are a bit pricier... but places like Fidimas are AMAZING and the service is second to none. Tandoori times is also another that has great prices, beautiful food and wonderfully friendly service. Also, the Sun frequently shows films that are not mainstream. Seriously... do you check your facts before blathering on? Chemical smell... the only thing I can smell is the rubbish in your review. The only thing that holds water in what you've said is that we need a new highschool... however... the residents here have managed with the surrounding schools for quite some time and it hasn't been the end of education for them.
You are MASSIVELY BIASED sorry. Our kids went to the local Kingsville Primary School, we go to the Sun Theatre and love to eat at the Java Cafe or Bhopha Devi (weren't impressed with Tandoori Times at all unfortunately, much better Indian at Singh's in Nicholson St, Brunswick East). Our daughter has studied dance at the local ballet school on Francis St since she was four, our son has played sport for many local teams. We know and hang out with many of the local musos and creatives. We are LOCALS of long standing and hooked into the culture and social scene WHICH EXTENDS INTO THE FAR LESS TOXIC NEARBY SUBURBS. EVERYTHING I SAID IS TRUE. It is a disgrace that the local and state governments have allowed Yarraville to stay as TOXIC and POLLUTED as it is. Do you have an ulterior motive, are you trying to boost property values? Lots of kids have developed ASTHMA and other conditions from air borne pollution and other irritants. Ask the EPA or the YARRAVILLE TRUCK ACTION GROUP! Things may improve if the state government implements the West- East link. If. For the $ these days it would be better to buy in pockets of the Eastern suburbs where property values will rise, as much, if not more and where there is minimal POLLUTION, TOXIC SOIL or much, if any INDUSTRY or in surrounding areas. FYI CULTURE IS SPREAD THROUGHOUT THE WEST FROM LAVERTON TO FOOTSCRAY. THERE ARE COOL LITTLE SHOPPING / CAFE / CULTURAL AREAS EVERYWHERE IN THE WEST like Vernon St, South Kingsville (right next to Newport) or the cafes and Substation arts hub surrounding Newport train station. And that is 'white' person culture. Go to places like Footscray, for example, to eat the best Cambodian or African continent originated cuisines. One of the best European groceries is in Second Avenue, Altona North. More 'middle class' people are moving in ALL OVER THE WEST because they cannot afford to buy in the East and then build a like minded community. The same reason why some musos and creatives moved there 10+ years ago to rent or buy, because houses were really cheap. Yarraville is NOT A SUBURB OF 'GENTRY' except to real estate agents and pretentious locals, but has somewhat been transformed, as elsewhere in the west, by changes akin to hipster culture. It Is a still a suburb full of 'WORKING CLASS' people and immigrants (often Greek and elderly). It is still mostly a much cheaper option to live in than most of the inner North or East. For a reason .... it is bounded by industry and full of pollution, the blocks are small often without any off street parking (in the most desirable part near the village). Personally I really like the obvious multiculturalism of places like Footscray and Altona North although Yarraville itself is also very multicultural and diverse. A lot of the houses near the village are PUBLIC HOUSING / HOUSING COMMISSION owned. Did you know that? Oh and the Astro Turf at Clare Court Kindergarden really is there because of soil toxicity. Ring them and ask. Incidentally rerouting trucks, if that is what happens, will not address the issue of all the POISONS IN THE SOIL AND REPURPOSED LANDFILL upon which significant areas of Yarraville are built. WHAT WILL BE THE LONG TERM HEALTH CONSEQUENCES OF THIS, WHAT IS IN YOUR BACKYARD? Also, if Footscray becomes a satellite city, Yarraville's proximity to it is likely to be unattractive and therefore suburbs a bit further out like Spotswood, Newport and Altona North may be the most desirable to live in. We used to live in Carlton and there as always been cool stuff happening around the various play houses and grass roots creativity initiated in the inner north. Same in the inner east. If you say the inner west is best then look over your fence to the wider community, Yarraville is not the best of it!!!!
It is also the case that trucks are still on Somerville Rd they are restricted at before and after school times only.
FYI he massive industry infrastructure (silos, factories, 'power station for example) that forms part of the suburb and surrounds will not be relocated until the very distant future, if ever.
To repeat, because I want people to be fully informed, THE MASSIVE INDUSTRY INFRASTRUCTURE (SILOS, FACTORIES, 'POWER STATION' for example) THAT FORM PART OF THE SUBURB AND SURROUNDS WILL NOT BE RELOCATED UNTIL THE VERY DISTANT FUTURE, IF EVER.
Wow Andy what a post, so much bitterness. Enjoy Newport lakes just watch out for the snakes that come into peoples backyards, no biggie but just be aware. Here's a thought, have you ever considered directing the bulk of your energies into positivity rather than negativity, I guess not.
Andy is is talking absolute nonsense, any old inner city suburbs have the same soil issues (if any). Readers disregard. Yarraville is a fantastically unique suburb, With a great feel and community.
Toxic is the truth,,I know people who work at water treatment place in laver ton,,they take short cuts and save money by dumping highly toxic waste strait down the drains and sewers, we melbourians are in denial trying to augur coat things,,we are in big trouble toxic toxic toxic that's the truth
Wow AndyG2 you really need to get a life! How angry are you that people who live in Yarraville love it & won't agree with your profound wisdom & superior experience? You've obviously missed out on enjoying the best that Yarraville has to offer that (to your great offence) so many locals enjoy. Maybe the bitter & twisted find themselves excluded from community & community is a key word when talking about Yarraville. It can clearly do without you! Lucky Newport!
10 years is a long time to live in a suburb that you hate so much. Can't help but wonder why you have stayed so long if it is so bad! We have lived here for 6 years ( including 3 years on Francis St) and never experienced any of the apocalyptic horrors you describe. Good luck in Newport - which by the way also has a petrol refinery in close proximity.
Were you having a nervous breakdown when you wrote this, Andy?
Sadly too much of what Andy says is actually very accurate, albeit maybe not as all rounded as they suggest. There are definitely so many amazing qualities about Yarraville and I understand people who feel the need to defend what they love, but we do also need to acknowledge the sad fact that Yarraville, along with some other communities in the West have a long-standing reputation for being built on toxic sites and the respiratory health of our residents are the very worst in Melbourne due to being on the doorstep of the largest port in Australia and all the trucks that entails. I live on Francis St, on the border of Kingsville and it really is a problem, especially if you enjoy or prefer to walk or cycle as Australia has one of the oldest truck fleets for a developed nation and the pollution is quite serious. They are about to implement longer truck curfew times for all trucks from before 2010, so progress is happening.
What the West desperately needs is all containers coming off the ships to be taken by rail to the outskirts and a truck depot that then moves it all onto trucks and taken from there. Melbourne is our biggest port as a lot is shipped here before moving on to the rest of Australia by road so most of our big trucks are not even for servicing Melbourne so can you imagine how much better our roads, health and safety would be if we implemented this plan?
But what Yarraville struggles with is more than outweighed by the wonderful things & people that make up this fabulous community. I still personally prefer Footscray :) but am very much enjoying living here. :)
Andy. What's stopping you from leaving? Your post has sucked the life out of me. Please go away.
Sorry peters83 I wouldnt want to suck the life out of you! Dont worry the tunnel will make things better. Yarraville has two strengths that lift it out of cramped and polluted status; the wonderful Sun Theatre and the culture. We have moved a few train stops down; less pollution, less proximity to silos and industry, more nature, more space and the beach. And what has happened? That same culture has /is spreading all through the inner west now. If you want to have a drink at a charming little bar I would recommend Footscray not Yarraville. Actually Footscray also has so many great restaurants where you can eat delicious food from a multiplicity of cultures. There is also a thriving arts precinct in Footscray ... and Newport. Anderson St is looking a bit shabby too these days ... not in a good way.
No need to post that seems I said it better in my former posts written long ago. I just want to say that I didnt hate Yarraville. Many of our close friends still live there. I do think its a bit laughable to refer to it as gentrified however ... and I dont think the people who brought about the general cultural change in the area would ever want it to become gentrified and inaccessible to a diverse community!!!! What I did hate was the environmental issues that plague the area. How about working toward changing that rather than minimising its importance?
Whats wrong with it being gentrified? Theres nothing wrong with enjoying your own culture, even if you happen to be the "dreaded white man".....Andy I think the one star was srly ridiculous and you know it. And the constant caps was so OMG UGH to read. Two thumbs down.
Gentrified is fine if you are happy to exclude diversity. I happen to think diversity is key to creating great community. That's right: community.
"The best culture in the west!"
Ahhhh Yarraville, with it's village culture and vibrant atmosphere you would be hard pressed to find a person who didn't love this quaint little suburb which is only 7kms from the city! The yarraville village offers a great lifestyle with many cafes and shops to choose from, but with out a doubt its main star is the Sun theatre (an independent theatre which offers great value for your money). Yarraville seems to have many great streets with many bordering parks (which seems to be a lot). There is a great sense of community and everyone from all walks of life seems to be bobbing around the village!
A great place for families to single business people, and everyone in between!!

AndyG2, do you still live in Yarraville? Is the traffic at Francis St still as bad as it is? I am considering to move there, either Francis st, Tongue St or Sommerville Rd, would you give me some advice? Thanks
Hi ChiShanH - read my response on AndyG2's original post.
Hello :) I love the sound of Yarraville but Im struggling to identify where the 'toxic sites' are that people are referring to. My younger child has severe asthma so I obviously wouldnt want to stay somewhere that would affect his health negatively. Are there some areas that are more polluted than others?
"Yarraville - the pick of the west!"
What a place to live, it has a vibrant cafe' culture with some truly great coffee, the iconic Sun Theatre, Yarraville gardens, public transport and a great village feel.
With Seddon, Spotswood, Newport and Footscray around the corner you are spoilt for choice when it comes to eating out - from cheap eats to quality dining. Williamstown beach isn't far away and there are plenty of bike paths too. We have lived here 5 years now and love it to bits.
Truck traffic/pollution is in essence limited to Francis Street and Whitehall Road, it would be great if they deliver on the proposed alternate truck route, but in my opinion the truck traffic does not detract from Yarraville's village lifestyle and positive community atmosphere.
A high school would be a bonus. You can visit http://www.skyhigh.org.au for more information about a lobby group petitioning for a new local high school.
I hope my comments on Yarraville and surrounds has been helpful.

fyi : they are building the high school now, directly opposite the TAFE
That's great and ABOUT TIME, friends of mine were lobbying at least 14 years ago. Next they need to get rid of the portable classrooms that have been populating the local primary schools for almost as long. The tunnel will make a big difference also. But WHY is it your less 'gentrified' neighbours up the street, (with lower property values and less resources) who live on and near Millers Rd, Altona North are going to INHERIT your truck problem. Anyone care about that? Anyone willing to do anything about helping your neighbours.I don't understand why the tunnel isn't extending a bit further to avoid residential areas completely.
"Fantastic place to live"
Yarraville is a excellent place to live with a great village feel. I love this little village pocket just moments from the CBD. Fantastic cafes, restaurants and bars for a good night out. Loads of great parks and places for families to hang out in the the day. I love going out with with my kids to Yarraville Gardens and meeting up with friends for drinks in the village. Cant ask for more!

great review. I love the gardens too! There are always large families meeting and basking in the glory of the sun. Thanks for sharing.
Also add the pop-up park in Ballarat Street as a fantastic pocket in the village - hopefully it will eventually become a permanent fixture in Yarraville

Hey Village Life. If Yarraville is close to the beach, doesn't that mean it is close to schools as well? The beach you;re talking about is Williamstown and that has 2 High schools. Then Footscray is closer and has 2 also. Or do you mean that the actual suburb itself doesn't have a high school?
"Should have moved here years ago"
I know Yarraville is on the up but this place is even better than the reviews. A bustling village that still retains a strong community feel. An upgraded train station makes the city a short train trip away. And excellent cafe options all around.
A real gem of the west.

"Great village vibe"
I moved to Yarraville a year ago and couldn't be happier. There is so much character in the Village. Great coffee, tapas bars, restaurants and good wine. Even A gorgeous art deco cinema in the heart of town.
The CBD is a ten minute train ride away and also very accessible by car. And Williamstown beach is just minutes away. What more could you ask for?

Hey zivmis, I don't understand why you feel Yarraville is for families. Could you share your thoughts and experiences with the rest of us to explain?
I was wondering that too, there are plenty of high schools within 10 minutes in other suburbs. Yarraville is a great suburb for families to live, my guess is zivmis just prefers living in mcleod, I see everything is amazing in mcleod according to zivmis ........hahaha :)
I wish that was true, what I'd give to chg my decision in 2001 to live West & have continued to live west despite my first hand experience with crime! Just trying to help others thinking living closer in the west is the way to go, especially if they are going to have a family. I should have listened to all the friends living East, but being from regional Victoria which can have a bad rep, I figured it was being overplayed. I was wrong.
OK, I'm not sure you have given us any extra detail. Could you be more detailed and less generalised? I think it will help others make there own decisions based on yours and others experiences...
Yarraville is absolutely overrated! and dare I say well over priced! The place has lost its charm. It was a great place to live when 'Up and Coming" - 10 years ago. Crime is an issue....
Emmij I'm not sure why you think the crime rate in Yarraville is an issue. I've lived in Newport, Spotswood and now Yarraville for 10 years and have never really had an issue with crime, other than a break in/burglary. Further out west is more problematic with crime statistics and perhaps Footscray - where has your opinion of the crime stats in Yarraville come from?
"Great Place"
Been here all my life and it's never been better, even the council is getting better.
yes lot's of great parks to walk your dogs around and the streets are quiet and safe to walk about too. world class coffee in the village and great bike rides in every direction.
But mostly it's the new generation of people from all over that have given this old village a real boost

"I love this place"
I have lived in Coronation street for 3 years now and have a family of 4. It is so close to everything and a very beautiful suburb to drive/walk through. So close to everything and a very quiet and safe neighborhood.
City is so close as is the beach and all public transport. It is a suburb that doesn't have many houses on the market because nobody wants to leave and if you get a chance I do recommend to buy.
The prestige streets are Queensville, Coronation, Chirnside and Empress.

Kingsville is a heritage listed suburb that has beautiful tree lined streets and beautiful homes. It is close to seddon village (2 mins), Yarraville Village (3 mins), Williamstown beach (7 mins), Vic Market (10 mins), Harbour town (10 mins) Highpoint shopping centre (8 mins) CBD (10 mins), and footscray market (5 mins).
Five nearby train stations: West Footscray (1 min), Middle Footscray (2 mins), Footscray (5 mins), Seddon (3 mins), Yarraville (4 mins)
Also note Etihad stadium is only 10 mins down the road and Whitten Oval is only (2mins). Torquay is 35-40mins down the road.
3 main ways to get to the city: West Gate freeway, Footscray road, and Dynon Rd. And Geelong rd if you want to head towards Geelong.

The only way you could travel Kingsville to Torquay in 35 minutes is by helicopter. 65-75 minutes is more realistic.
"A village lifestyle yet so close to the city"
Its a great option if you can't afford Port Melbourne or surrounding areas in the East. Its less than 10 minutes into the city, 5 minutes to Williamstown beaches, 5 minutes to Port & South Melbourne. The houses are being bought up by young couples who are renovating them so its just a matter of time before the house prices go up as well as rental prices. Still very affordable for the proximity to the city and surrounds. The pocket around cruikshank park and wembley avenue are green and leafy way cheaper than the village which is somewhat treeless. They are building a new development on Francis Rd. near Roberts rd.th old bradmill factory which will have housing a new library, supermarket and shops which will be great for West Yarraville. One negative is the trucks but with the new truck tunnel to the port it will deflect most of the trucks from Yarraville all together. Great place to live & get in while its still affordable for inner city living.

"Lovely little town in Victoria"
I am living in Yarraville all my life. I love everything in Yarraville. They have gorgeous shops which are great for artists, Sun theatre, great schools for primary kids and heaps of lovely architectures and great parks to have a coffee when it's sunny day! The negative things are heaps of trucks at between westgate bridge and Francis st, no secondary schools for teenagers so they have to go to schools in Newport, Williamstown or even Prahran and Windsor. I hope that they could be improving for updating road from chaotic traffic during peak hours, more secondary schools, definitely for hospitals and tertiary institutions because we dont want to spend too money for travelling to universities everyday.

"A Great place to live, for anyone..."
Yarraville is a vibrant village 6kms west of the city. The village centre is a bustling strip of unique cafes restaurants and bars. Its very central with easy acess to the city by car or public transport. There are beautiful parks surrounding the village.
Individual voices are heard and council rates are used to benefit the community.
There is truck traffic and a lack of secondary schools, but value for money is second to none.
All those eastern suburb blow ins that are bored with the suburb, you only get out what you put into a community.
In Yarraville if you make an effort to get involved you will be greatly rewarded.
I moved here three years ago and have not looked back, financially more stable and i really enjoy where i live.....My neihbour was offered huge money to sell up, he refused cause he couldnt live anywhere else...

"Slightly overrated but overall nice"
Im from the East and moved to Yarraville in February this year. I do see the apeal but I do also feel a little institutionalised by it now! It feels like the sort of dead end of Melbourne. Im used to Northcote / Clifton Hill / Fitzroy and Brunswick and feel options for entertainment are limited here. You go to the same place for breakfast, same place for the cinema etc etc. I love Yarraville village but after you live here for a while it becomes very repetitive and spoils the apeal a little bit.
I also feel a little vulnerbale and unsafe where we are situated. Yarraville and Seddon are essentially two lovely little towns / villages nestled in some not so nice areas which is a shame.

"Happy I moved into area"
I have found Yarraville great! I moved into the area from bayside and it has been a great move. I love the restaurants and bars (esp the Sun Theatre). People say the trucks are an issue, But I have only found them on the main roads and no problem. Growing up in the Leafy East i'm definately hooked on Yarraville and proud to be a Westy.

"Lovin every day here."
We moved to Kingsville about 3 years ago, and have to agree with what other people have said about the area. It has a great Vibe and a great location. From the younger families to the older Greek community we all live in perfect harmony. Its really nice to live in a place that is culturally diverse, but not too diverse. The closeness to Docklands, City, Knifepoint being 10-20 min away is just amazing. Make the move, you wont be disappointed.

"The best of many worlds...."
Such a lovely, quiet little pocket. Our house (in Empress Avenue) is an easy 10 minute walk to the Seddon village and 15 to Yarraville village, offering a huge variety of fabulous restaurants and cafes. The local Yarraville cinema (The Sun Theatre) is fantastic, with super-spacious seating and the option to enjoy an adult beverage while you enjoy the show. During nice weather, we even walk into Footscray (20-25 mins) to enjoy fantastic Vietnamese Pho or African food!
There's great shopping options around - outside of peak times, it takes only eight minutes to drive to Highpoint shopping centre, 10 to the Docklands, under 10 to the Victoria Markets, or five minutes to the Footscray Markets. The ring road is close by, and the West Footscray train station is nine minutes walk from our house (with about a 15 minute ride into the CBD).
I highly recommend living in Kingsville. After six years, we still think buying here is the best thing we've ever done!

"A TIMELY REVIEW"
I have lived in Yarraville for 15years.When I first moved hear we were a couple with no kids.Good investment oppourtunity.good decision back then.
now with kids there are no secondary schools and lots of low income familys as the rents are cheap.
Way too many trucks and the pollution keeps getting worse and worse .noise pollution ,visual pollution and sensory pollution.
Traffic is kaotic as access to the westgate is limited especially at peak hour.
if you are thinking of buying here do your research and check out your potential neighbours..they may not be owners also look at the street scape if there are no trees now they are not on the agenda .we tried to get trees in our street for 10 years and eventually gave up.
Caveat emptor.

"Great spot - close to everything and affordable."
We just moved to Yarraville from St Kilda East. Its a great spot and so affordable when you think about how close it is to the city and beach. For an inner city suburb it feels quite safe and spacious. Great parks and cafes too. The only thing is the TRUCKS too many trucks. but I heard that they are building an on/off ramp from the westgate onto Hyde st which will make Francis St. and Williamstown Rd. nearly truck free !!

"Still an inner-city gem"
Having lived in Yarraville for over 10 years, I found it as an up and coming area, it has improved vastly during my time here and I see plenty more to come.
It remains a suburb full of history and character, with a genuine village feel. It is close to the CBD with good train links. Shops are decent, cafes and restaurants great and you'll struggle to find a suburb with a better art-deco cinema on your doorstep. However, people seeking leafy solitude should head for the eastern suburbs.
There are some fair comments in the previous review, but it can be easy sometimes to overstate the negative. Yarraville has all of the advantages and disadvantages of other Melbourne inner-city suburbs, crime included. The difference is that entry prices in Yarraville can be significantly lower.
There are well publicised medium term plans to take truck traffic off the trunk roads via a new off ramp from the Westgate bridge straight into the docks, and there is some good quality medium density development cropping up in places, which generally complement the predominant weatherboard feel.
A lack of a local high school and high demand for childcare/kinder are other well publicised issues for the area. Gentrification over the last 10-15 years has been followed by a baby boom, and the infrastructure for this is yet to catch up. In recent years, a grassroots campaign has been established to re-establish a high school in the area and this is a work in progress.

"Yarraville - Somewhat overated"
Yarraville has a nice village centre, however the traffic is terrible and often dangerous. The council is thinking about fixed cameras in the village to combat the problems. Good choices of cafe and restaurants. The Irish pub is horrible and very rough. There have been a few safely issues in Yarraville of late. Stabbings, robberies and murders. Although the suburb is becoming more gentrified, it still remains in the inner west - which is the rougher side of town.
This area has a lot of families but lacks infrastructure for these children. Childcare is virtually non-exsistent in this area - unless you put your child on the list before birth. Kindergarten places are similar - although not as tight. (You can leave it until the child is one before putting them on the list) The suburb boasts 3 primary schools (1 Catholic, 2 government) which all have really good reputations - however there are no secondary school in the immediate area. The closest secondary schools being Maidstone and Footscray. Yarraville does not fall in the Williamstown High catchment area.
"Popular area for quality village living"
A popular suburb due to its areas of unique character and quality of village life, Yarraville sits 6 km outside of Melbourne’s CBD amongst suburbs such as Brooklyn, Spotswood, Altona North, Seddon, Kingsville, West Footscray and West Melbourne. The area is best suited to families as it boasts four primary schools and a number of sporting clubs including a tennis, soccer, lacrosse, hockey, bicycle, Aussie Rules, cricket and baseball club. Yarraville plays host to a number of churches of differing faiths, an aquatic centre, a shopping centre, a film society, community centre, weekend market and a number of award winning cafes and restaurants. The annual Yarraville Festival is also held in the town and attracts more than 10,000 people to enjoy its masquerade ball, carnival, street performances, art exhibitions, poetry readings and market stalls. Yarraville has a suburban railway station which links the town with Melbourne’s CBD as well as several bus routes which service the area.

"Top spot not far from the city"
Kingsville has a wonderful vibe, it just feels right.
There are schools close by and it is a friendly area making it good for families. However, there are places for everyone from one bedroom apartments to family homes. The downside for me is the apartment blocks are unattractive monstrosities, but that the nature of apartment blocks regardless of location.
It is close to the city and well serviced by public transport making it easy to get into the city for work, or a good night out.
There are some great little places to eat close by. If you want to get out for a night out there are some places not too far away but they aren’t just at the end of the street.

The city isn’t too far and the beach is close making this a wonderful location. It is quiet and attractive.
Everything you need is close by including a good range of places to eat out.
It is a great place to raise a family as the streets are quiet and safe even though it’s close to West Gate Bridge.
Its good family living close to the city and with Yarraville Village there is little need to make use of the proximity to the city.
There are a few good parks and schools around the place making it ideal for young families.
